I loved this short story as a little girl. I loved it so much that I tried to type it out on a typewriter. I find this story under appreciated at times. This is a young girl who is full of confidence and yet vulnerable also. She is fierce and about her family. I love the underlying theme about how little girls are raised to be these pretty little things. Squeaky is aware of the misogynistic world and she also knows that she will never be that kind of fake ass person. Yet a strong willed women. Squeaky is real. I loved this story because Squeaky is honest, vulnerable and confident. This was the underlying theme as a young biracial kid growing up moved me. :-)

Thanks you so much for sharing. That's the best kind of story when we can see how stories impact us on a personal level. Squeaky is an amazing character and I'm glad you found inspiration in it.

What a sweet story! We all need a little fixing, and I think when we realize that we’re more appreciative of others. Don’t talk to me when I’m training for a run either, though! 😁😂

I don't think that I have read anything by Bambara, but this does sound really sweet, and maybe something I should read to lighten up the mood every now and then haha. As always, great analysis! 😎

I ended up like Squeaky way more than I thought I would. I really have liked what Bambara has put out

Have you done anything by Carson Mccullers Or Patricia Highsmith, Virginia Woolf?

We did one short story by Woolf. We had a few more planed but have had to reschedule for various reasons not related to her at all. Just so happened to have issues the weeks we'd had planned her.

So Squeaky wins this race year after year. So that builds her reputation and it also gives her a feeling of accomplishment. WHAT IF: when she sees Raymond running, she sees it as Raymond showing his interest in their tradition, a shared love of running that Squeaky can relate to? What if Squeaky sees this opportunity to help train Raymond, thereby giving her a new purpose?
