A stunning live performance of this classic ballet performed by the Kirov Ballet on the very stage where the company had premiered the work in 1898. This 1980 production stars Irina Kolpakova in the title role, with Sergei Berezhnoi as Jean de Brien and Gennady Selutsky as Aderakhman. Choreography by Marius Petipa; Production revised by Konstantin Sergeyev. Orchestra of the Kirov Theatre; Viktor Shirokov, conductor

Bighin Giulio Renzo. 😊😊😊😊😊😊

This is not a ghastly production!!!! I was in it just last week here in DC!!! Strangely enough after having had the honor of dancing in ABT's Sleeping Beauty the last week of January. Ms. Kolpakova as you all probably know is a ballet mistress with ABT. Obviously saw her that week coaching. So was wonderful to come across this to prepare for my Saracen guard role! She autographed my copy of her 1983 Sleeping Beauty video!!! The costumes for the ballerinas in Raymonda are now stunning!!!! BTW, the women now wear tutus in the first waltz of Act I. They have updated the men's to a degree as well. Ekaterina Kondaurova was just stunning as Raymonda and little did I know until she was autographing a 2002 photo of us together from Chemiakin's Nutcracker, that she is married to Islom Baimuradov who was Ali (2nd in command to Abderakhman) and our boss on stage. BTW, the White Lady was not needed for the production!!!! Not to argue, but it's like not having Dulcinea in Don Quixote as the ballet is more so about Kitri and Basil(io). My one snide comment is that La Scala's sucked!!!!! My apologies millriv!!!!

The La Scala production is actually quite beautiful. From choreography to miming. One thing that I found lacking in the Kirov-Mariinsky production is the omission of some variation for Abderakhman which doesn't connect the flow of the story. But as far as character dances and corps, nothing beats Kirov (or and equally with Bolshoi). The La Scala corps is just too weak. The premier of the reconstruction was carried by Olesya Novikova then the following performances were just a meh.

Had the opportunity to see Mr. Berezhnoi (sp) in the studio (Kennedy Center) coaching one of the princes for Sleeping Beauty back in 2010. His widow, Tatiana Tehrekova is my 2nd favorite Gamzatti (Elisabeth Platel is #1...sorry Nureyev haters) from La Bayadere. :-)
i mean....kolpakova and berezhnoi....as good as semenyaka and mukhmedov are in the bolshoi production...they are clearly dancers dancing....whereas kolpakova/berezhnoi ARE raymonda/jean!

What a sad, sad production! This has nothing to do with the original story that was first produced at this same theatre. Where is the White Lady!!!! They have bowlderdized everything. Thank God for the La Scala revival which gives the original scenario as intended. Also the sets are the worst thing I've seen from this great theatre. This all makes the dancing, however fabulous, almost not worth it.

But La Scala needs the ex-director of this company, former choreographer of this company and the ballerina of this company to revive Raymonda. Ballet could not survive without keeping Kirov/Vaganova tradition intact.

I saw this production at Segerstrom Center, Orange County, CA in the fall of 2016. The program made a point of the fact that this is the original full length production. I did not see this on KZbin until some time later, but it seems the same! Also, the sets were absolutely enchanting. They looked so much like Fairy Tale books I had as a child and are a part of how much I love this ballet! However, I will admit that it is difficult to see them properly in their entirety in this video In person, the colors and full scope of the art work are really wonderful. Someone else made a negative comment on the costumes. This is again, a problem with video. Up close, some of the costumes are horribly garish, but even as close as good orchestra seats, these colors soften while still getting the attention that dancer's costume needs on STAGE! It's a good thing the video doesn't do super close=ups of the Princess' face or you would see how heavy the eye make up is and how thick the fake eyelashes are! I'd like to see a video that takes in the WHOLE stage from about Row 9 Center. Then we would see the ballet the way it was MEANT to be seen instead of the filming choices this videographer makes!, moving too far out then coming in too close? It's fun to see, but it simply doesn't have the full power and breathtaking scale the WHOLE ballet could give in video if evenly filmed to make the viewer feel like they're there in person! Personally, this ballet was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen on stage except for beiing lucky enough to see Barishnikov and Gelsey Kirkland in Barishnikov's Nutcracker!

Julia, I am so jealous yo saw Baryshnikov in Nutcracker, my two favorite performers of that role are Misha and NikolaiTsiskaridze who was out of this world, now he is preparing and directing his students at Vaganova for the annual Nutcracker and I know it will be spectacular like all other shows have been since he became a rector. He was also the most incredible Jean De Brienne and won a prize for that role. I will find a clip (it's pretty long) and will post it here for you. Greetings from San Francisco
