Dr. Tousley made a comment about Raytheon’s evolution as a radar company and vacuum tubes. He commented that solid state has replaced the tubes. Actually Korea produces thousands of microwave tubes every day called magnetrons (80% efficient) that power household ovens. Being in that industry, I have heard tubes will be replaced by solid state devices in the next 10 years, every year, for 40 years. There are so many applications like physics research accelerators (LHC at CERN), cancer radiation machines, radar, industrial heating, and satellite communications that still use vacuum tubes. Great interview. Broad scope is amazing.
