Waves Clarity Vx Pro vs. Clarity Vx: Plugin Differences, Demo, and Tutorial

We started off with Clarity Vx which has been brilliant for taming mics on live corporate presentation events. We recently upgraded to the Pro version and it's definitely worth the upgrade for our purposes. Now it's 6 band you can selectively tune the voice and the reflections so that you are minimising what you take out of the original voice, versus auditorium bounceback, then there's the nice touch of the 6 band parametric EQ (sort of). When combined with DeVerberate 3, it's a dream combination for producing a dry soundbooth output from live lapel & lectern mics, which means clean uncluttered audio exiting the audio speakers and reaching the audience.

Clarity VX is a must for post production! It takes out breaths, pops, background sounds and leaves the vocal clean and crisp. I have tried so many combos of filters and nothing comes close.

I bought Clarity VX a few weeks ago on sale @ $29. I also bought 2 or 3 other plugins at the time. I started to wonder if Waves had some sort of customer loyalty rewards or something, so I logged back in during the same sale. The interesting thing is I can upgrade my Clarity VX that I paid $29 for at $203 for the upgrade to get Clarity VX Pro. It is interesting because the sale price of Clarity VX Pro is $249 right now. The sale price of Clarity VX is $29. So one might think I'd have to pay the full difference of $220 but no it is $203. I don't know, I'm a new Waves customer, so maybe I am missing something, but I think people can actually get another $17 off Clarity VX Pro by going this route. Not a big savings - certainly not as big as the main savings from the sale in the first place - but hey, every few bucks still helps.

Well honestly I'm not so blown away by this. I board the standard version and will probably be using it once in a while, but there is still space for improvement with this plugin. Not bad at all, but on the other hand not a real game changer. I think Acusonus Era 6, when it was available does a less artificially sounding job. But at least your video is super great!

For film/video production, extracting just the ambience from the production tracks is a great time saver because the sound recordist does not need to create one (and this would mean having silence on the set for a minute or two).

It's being able to isolate the ambient noise without unwanted noise that makes a difference. With the lower end clarity you either take the ambience noise, unwanted noise and all or no ambience noise at all.

Not gonna lie i have the basic clarity and recorded vocals in my room with no pop filter and a cheap AT mic no pop filter just in my hand. Not gonna lie the results were AMAZING. Cleaned up the vocal and removed some really strong P pops from the vocal. Room was relatively quiet tho.

Under my plugins after DL the cheaper one, it has Clarity Vx (m) as an option AND Clarity Vx Mono as another option (& same for stereo). What’s the difference between (m) & Mono?

I've tried various noise reduction plugins, including the Clarity Vx, and honestly, I'm not too impressed. None of them seem to maintain vocal sharpness; they all tend to compress the voice too much. Even with careful EQ adjustments, I can't seem to restore the clarity I'm looking for. Does anyone else have the same issue or any tips on how to manage this better?

The best thing is to try your best to record the audio cleaner. If you are in a studio, try to build a "vocal tent" with heavy blankets or comforters to absorb the room sound. If you are on a set or outdoors, this will be a lot harder and it's best to try to use the polar pattern of the mic to minimize or reject as much noise as possible. Hope that helps!

I'm trying a demo version of Clarity VX to fix vocals where there is a lot of stage volume. I am very impressed with the software, but it working exactly opposite of what I am trying to achieve. The result I'm getting is that the vocal is completely removed from the track and all that remains is the stage volume. Weird, right? Trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. (Edited: I launched Logic Pro under Rosetta and the Clarity VX is working properly)

I’m trying to remove noise floor/self noise hiss. However I noticed inconsistent results. With a swishy effect between removing the hiss leaving it in when I’m talking. Any advice? Thank you

I'm not sure the Pro version can go lower than intro price - even during sale. It's been like that for long time. If you can deal with the Non Pro version, then pick the regular one during sale.

@@Yo-oz6pj I have a hard time believing Clarity outperforms RX9's Dialogue Isolate. Of course Clarity is a real time processor, but then there's Acon Digital's Dialogue: Extract for real time processing. I'm a bit skeptical calling it a game changer at the moment. I really do like Clarity Pro's extra features though; especially the reflection and band controls but I'm not sure that even warrants the $650 difference @ msrp. I really haven't been impressed with what I've heard so far tbh. In terms of absolute quality, I still think RX 9 DX Isolate + Cedar yields better results. I think it'd be competitive if priced around $100 for Clarity Pro, putting it in the ballpark of Acon Digital Dialogue: Extract. Edit: Been demoing it a bit, it's performed pretty well- extremely impressive for a real time algorithm and the latency is shorter than Acon Digital's Dialogue: Extract. The reflection preservation and multiband functionality is great. I still lean towards RX 9's Dialogue Isolate in terms of artifacts, and especially the slider control over Sensitivity/Ambience Preservation/and the ability to boost dialogue. (In the example I was working on, a character says part of a line off axis, so boosting that specific line with Dialogue Isolate allows the noise floor to remain consistant. I also used it to grab another characters line from an adjacent actor's lav). Ambience Preservation is useful as it allows you to attenuate non continuous noise without unnecessarily reducing/artifacting the ambience (sometime the legacy Dialogue Isolate algorithm works better for non-continuous noise behind dialogue). Finally, another use-case Dialogue Isolate won out in is bringing up missing/muffled high end frequencies from a buried lav mic. Using the Dialogue Boost again selecting those frequencies, I was able to retrieve that missing high end frequency content. With Clarity, I attempted to do this by EQing the high frequencies, and using the multiband functionality to attenuate the resulting hiss, but this resulted in audible artifacts as compared to Dialogue Isolate. I would say clarity vx pro did do a better job preserving the reflections/release of the dialogue in some cases.

As it is a plugin it probably requires a daw to operate in. Birds I don't know but Izotope Rx is brilliant for that when using find similar function when a1 bird has been selected

NO! I should have mentioned this or showed it with an example. That is pretty limited. It DOES reduce some if it's way over the top, but it doesn't remove the boxiness caused by early reflections.

No, check Deverberate 3 (the version number is important) from Acon Digital. For me it's the best tool to remove reverb from the recording :)

Could I use this to remove mic bleed. I have 2 people recording a podcast in a small room and the mics pick up the other person making it really messy to edit.

Hmmm I don't think this would work well. I'm that case I would try to use side chain compression or gating to make the bleed quieter. Hope that helps!

Dereverb removes only the reverb and room ambience, whereas clarity vx removes background noises like a fan, dogs barking, etc.
