You don't need a dongle at all. Just buy a cable with USB-C on one end and HDMI on the other. That's what I do.
3 жыл бұрын
That works, the problem is when you actually wanna use that usb-c for other things, or wanna use that monitor with computers that don't have usb-c. Also some (if not most) usb-c to hdmi adapters have a lot of limitations and its hard to find one that actually does 4K 60Hz with proper color depth and features. Most of them completely lose FreeSync, HDR and other features that your monitor could support. Dongle/adapters world is a very mindf*ck world, and I speak from experience. I have an HDR monitor and I tried everything to make it work with my M1 MBP, with every adapter possible, and nothing works. With HDMI directly connected to my windows laptop it works perfectly. None of those usb-c to hdmi adapters work on windows with those features, either. Just HDMI to HDMI. or DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, which that windows laptop also has. But I bought a usb-c to displayport adapter thinking it would work better, but nope, the computer (be it the MBP or the PC) can't see the HDR or FreeSync of the monitor through it either. Having actual real ports is very underrated, trust me. Dongles or adapters don't solve anything, they make your life worse in every possible way. Bandwidth limitations, power limitations, compatibility, loss of features between device and accessory through dongle/adapter, losing them, they are expensive, etc. Not having ports on your high end computer is a really huge nightmare. Unless you have the Pro Display HDR. That works fine. Because Apple. On mac, only. Also because Apple.

Why would you buy a big clunky laptop if you’re not a creator? Do you use a laptop for Facebook and KZbin? I think if you’re not a creator then the cheapest iPad beats everything for $300 it’s the best.

@@jamesnyers1721 oh I don’t know, managing large projects, working with large databases, coding, development, running programs for school, just to name a few. There are tons of uses outside of content creation that would benefit from a powerful machine. Assuming if someone isn’t creating content then they’re just using KZbin and Facebook is pretty narrow minded. As a med student I’m aware I’m not the most power user out there but I need a powerful enough computer to be able to handle significant multitasking, run large and sometimes complex spreadsheets/accounting type stuff for a business I’m involved in, run moderately graphics intensive anatomy programs such as one that allows me to go through an interactive 3D model of the central nervous system, and run other resource intensive programs. My old laptop running on an i7 from around 2015 or 2016 (don’t remember what gen) with 8GB of ram was slowing down significantly when I was doing my more intensive work, so I needed something more powerful, but my only “content creation” is when I post a pic to Instagram. I’m sure I fit into a large percentage of viewers that don’t use their powerful machines for content creation

@@jamesnyers1721 so what laptops in this video are big and clunky? These are thin and light machines. To answer you question, how about coding, cad/cam, running virtual machines? Razer Blade 14 inch is definitely the laptop of the year by far especially if you are doing tasks that require heavy GPU work. The specs of the new Razer Blade are more comparable to the M1 Macbooks in terms of performance but overall the Blade 14 packs a huge amount of power which the M1 Macbooks don't offer. Especially if you are a gamer you definitely need to go with Razer since Macbooks and macOS can't even do gaming at all.

idk if I really agree that dongles are the worst. Sure they suck if you have them scattered all over your desk but when it comes to cable management it will make your life so much easier. You can hide a USB hub for you MacBook at the bottom edge of your desk then all you need to do when docking your MacBook is plug it into the USB hub. If you use a thunderbolt display this setup can look extremely clean and is extremely fast when you want to just plug your MacBook in and start working. If you're like me and have two computers, one PC and one MacBook, then you can use a KVM switch to plug in your shared peripherals. Then you'll never have to move keyboard, mouse, and headphones between computers again. Dongles are definitely the future!

I do a lot of browsing running through docs and boy that 144 hz display spoiled me. M1 vs AMD doesn;t matter in day to day performance if one has 144 hz display and other has just 60 hz display. It's a fair comparison for some people, especially me. Being a "gaming laptop" means it's also very usable for VR development, simulation development, 3D modeling, rendering and etc (and of course, video, photography and digital art). While the M1 isn't there yet, its interesting to see how big the gap is and if the M1X *might* be a do it all machine (especially with strong rumors that Apple will get into the AR / VR space). It's also interesting, because it helps to tell me how a Macbook Pro or Mac Mini might fit into a PC workflow.

Worst part of razers are their expensive proprietary chargers, even the few smaller models that technically use usbc are still required to use such high wattage usbc chargers it’s still basically a razer charger that supports the high enough watts Where as MacBooks, especially M1 MacBooks can charge from a phones usbc block or a cheap battery bank

In my eyes, that Razer is nice but it lacks it where it counts….battery life. It doesn’t matter how powerful a machine is if you can’t use it.

@@jacobbanas9539 I was surprised that EDD didn’t mention this aspect. Other you tubers are reporting 6-8 hours when using as an everyday office machine. When gaming that shrinks to 1.5 to 2 hours. My current MBP M1 averages about 15 hours doing office work, and around 5 doing thinks like super heavy photoshop and gaming. Note that games made for Apple silicon draw a lot less battery than the ones that need to be ran on Rosetta 2.

I use a MacBook Pro 16 and I do want to say this battery life. Is apparently a big thing ! I used my MacBook 3 times in two years. Because blackout. And if I travel I plug charger in. In airplane train space ship sub marines. I the few times I used the battery I watched 4k movies and never really came critical the power came back on. way before that I was more worried about my food in the fridge lol ! Razor blade seems cool but if I bought that I would delete windows and install Linux. No way I want to use windows just my opinion.

For me when gaming I would rather have a desktop for windows. My M1 MacBook Air feels like a laptop and helps me 3D sculpt comfortably on the go. The problem with these gaming laptops is that you have to plug them in to get the best performance. Unless you are using simple software you still get half or less of the battery life of a Macbook now. Having a productivity laptop I want it to be a laptop. Not plugged into the wall most the time. I can even get hours of gaming in on Geforce Now, Stadia and xcloud without running through the battery.
