what about adding a cheap switching power module. At 1,35v not 1,2v .... gddr6 require 1,35v. In alternative, you can take it out from spare motherboards. Time ago there was a trend in the gaming community entusiasts .... they ake the gpu psu from old card, like 690 to use it with newer gpu to pump as much power possibile. So, it's not impossible at all. A bit complicated, but doable. The main problem with a laptop is the space.

Sorin, in GPU-Z you did the render test on Intel UHD! (@33:10). The 2070 is GDDR6, which may require 1.35V, depends on the manufacturer of the chips. Samsung can go as low as 1.1V, but only on later revision chips. You would need to run a proper GPU benchamrk - like Superposition, Heaven, and Furmark. I don't think this 1.2V can support 3 things at load: RAM, VRAM, and Memory Controller (that is inside the nVidia chip).

My innitial thought was just remove the components, clean up the board and dont make it any worseby digging out the rot: replace the mosfets and close it up. However I then thought the burned layers are like rust. You have to dig out all the rot in order for it to be a proper repair. Once the board is stable and safe, then replace the mosfets, and reconnect all the paths so its function is mostly returned.

Why I loved this post is because I wanted a *razor, "nearly pressed the buy button". But take note the drive to thin configure left a specific and huge problem as motherboard with heat failure. The elegant repair shown, in fact managed whole operation, but shows where the larger issue as design "has a fatal flaw." As a sold product, it is fact as consumable, a time part to failure. Note, in many modern auto's, module end use also has a fail rate as "built in". I cite LED tail lights, for an example. Should I have been this customer, I thus, would have liked to see the underlying fail problem, as to simply know why (and what went wrong). *The burning smell as #1 issue. But such repair, may have allowed salvage as data. (files, photos, ect.). For the tech at work bench, I take notice of the best methods. And the work flow as to determine fault, and repair where possible. * I am never afraid to "brick" a unit, but where also, I work outside of sales. In the end, I am cheering as this view conquered fault. What ever built in design was unworkable as full long term repair was at least, a restore to operation and the reason as "why".. "revealed". I am a huge fan, and in awe as to see a master at work, with such fun commentary. My multi-meter beeps, but not to the skill shown to my delighted view as to watch and gain lessons. M.

Any of the modern single board, thin laptops will have issues. They're too powerful, with poor cooling. MOSFETS are blowing up all over the place with these, and with the CPU & GPU being soldered, they're not easy t replace when MOSFET blows and kills them. You can still get laptops with socketed CPU and MXM socket graphics, but they're $4,000+

@DIYRepairHour6 ай бұрын
If the laptop is 5 years old as mentioned, the VMEM will be 1.35V, not 1.2V (plus I bet it drops a lot under load, those 2 mosfets can't carry RAM and VRAM). Before testing the memory woth MATS that would need to be addressed first.
@DIYRepairHour6 ай бұрын
yeah just seen the moment he booted into windows. the 2070 is reported in device manager, but he does the render test on intel graphics!
@SkyDown156 ай бұрын
It needs 1.35v, but it will work 1.2 if there is no load. If there is load, there will be artifacts, and crash. Higher clock needs the right voltage. The ram chips probably ok.
