Razer Wolverine Ultimate Is BETTER Than New Wolverine V2 Chroma

The 3 year old and $50 cheaper original Razer Wolverine Ultimate is better than the new Wolverine V2 Chroma that replaces it. With cheap plastics, a less comfortable ergonomic design, no carrying case, no audio controls, worse included thumb sticks and rubber grips, less useful trigger stops, and subjectively worse looking RGB, the $50 higher price tag looks a little silly. The new model does have better mechanical face buttons, addition of a mechanical D-pad, USB-C port, and share button (which doesn't function properly) which are nice additions.

I have tried both, this is not mentioned in most reviews or specs, but the chroma does not have trigger rumbles, the ultimate does. I play mostly racing games and no trigger rumbles really hurts. The chroma only has the rumbles in the handles.

Love your controller reviews! Tyvm I’m torn on the chroma. My biggest problem with it are the deadzones (yes I’ve updated the firmware and have the deadzones on the lowest setting). It feels like it has a built in deadzone that is noticeably bigger than a first party or SCUF Instinct controller. My guess is that they did this to stop people from complaining about stick drift. Corporate Office: “You can’t have stick drift if the controller is not registering any input. That’ll shut em up.” Did you notice that? For example, in Fortnite if I put deadzone down to minimum I don’t get immediate response, there’s a delay. First party and SCUF give immediate response. Otherwise, I found the Chroma’s trigger stops felt shorter and the bumpers have better tactile feedback than Ultimate. The plastic def feels cheaper but it also feels less “rattle-y” than the Wolverine. Like if you shake the Ultimate it feels like things aren’t properly glued/nailed down inside, or when you engage the trigger stops.

@@aweigh1010 Long term follow up: I gave up on the Chroma because of the deadzone issue. I had a new Ultimate ready to go, but it had bad stick drift out of the box so I went to SCUF Instinct Pro and after a month my aim was much more consistent. The Instinct Pro has been my main controller since. I was going to try SCUF Reflex but there are rumors of a first party Sony elite/pro controller so I am waiting to see what happens. Happy with the Instinct for now, but the rear paddles are not ideal, it’s hard to cover them with different fingers because the design is optimized for you to have one finger there and “rock” it back and forth to hit the paddles. This is not ideal if you need to hit both paddles simultaneously or in quick succession. I’m hoping Sony’s first party controller (if it is real) solves this problem.

i bought the Wolverine ultimate less than a week ago off Amazon (before watching this video) but i'm glad I did. still getting used to the rear buttons, but i 100% agree it feels like a quality built controller. the stick tension is definitely lighter and the controller is heavier. also I lost it at "condom style caps that slip over the tip"

I purchased both recently and while this may be true to an extent, buying a new Ultimate now is risky. The Ultimates I got had horrible left stick issues. Recent on sale ones. Like right out of the box, my characters moving no touch. I had to put deadzone settings to 7+ in games out of 10 to get it to stop. The app showed my left sticks weren't moving but the center of the stick was off center by a significant amount. There seems to be a sentiment on Reddit etc that potentially all old stock could run the risk and the reason is actually because of the case. The case apparently sets the stick a little off center. Couple that with the stock sitting for a year or longer, held perfectly off center by the case lid. I gave up on trying a few new replacements of the Ultimate. Can't be coincidental, all the same. Take it for what you will but it seems this risk could run through all the stock going out. I loved getting the case and whatnot, it made them feel more premium than the v2 Chroma but...functionality. I had no problems with the v2 Chroma but I did not like the placement of the select and start of the v2 Chroma. I also did not like the USB C being fairly moveable. Not nearly as snug as the Wolverine Ultimate plug at the top of the controller. Seemed bizarre it would have so much play to it. Just my experience buying both of them recently.

Damn so thats why I got 2 wolverine ultimates from amazon in the same week and they both came with stick drift. I also bought a 3rd one last year and it had a somewhat defective m3 button out of the box and only lasted about 4 months. The wolverine ultimate I use now has bad stick drift on the left stick luckely the game I play allowed me to dull the deadzone so I don't feel it most of the time. The rt button also came somewhat janky. Im gonna try the chroma v2 soon hopefully its similar enough to the wolverine ultimate.

I went through five, FIVE ultimates lookimg for low stick decentering. Then my final copy died. One of the copies had a bad rear paddle. The v2 may be more cheaply built, but it appears more consistent and has an excellent dpad

I’ve had 2 wolverine ultimate controllers. Really liked them. Currently my second controller has developed the same fault as the first having problems with the audio jack. With both controllers the audio is intermittent coming through the right side of the headset. The problems came only 6 months down the road with both controllers! Razer support is not the easiest to communicate with. Shame. I liked the controller a lot but I’ll be moving to the elite version 2 now.

The V2 is definitely way less comfortable, but the ultimate is very hard to aim diagonally. It's almost like there's some blocker that only wants you to aim horizontally or vertically.

Spot on. The v2 chroma was pretty much unusable to me cause of the ergonomics. The ultimate has the same weird rear button design but the shape of the controller allows easier access to the buttons without distorting your fingers as much. What we really need is a v3 with updated rear button placement and mechanical switches, a carrying case and the media module from the ultimate. I’d gladly pay $200.

You should warn people about their aftersales support. It's quite bad, and many people such as myself prefer to avoid companies that happily frustrate their customers. I had an enquiry, so I contact them with a simple question. 8 emails and 4 days later I am still waiting for the information I was after. Wow. If anyone buys a Razer product, make sure to get 3rd party warranty and avoid dealing with them direct. Life is too short for that nonsense.

I have about 4 years in total with these controllers combined and I agree that for the most part the Wolverine Tournament is superior. It so happened to be that my thumbsticks on my Wolverine V2 Chroma have gotten stick drift which has never happened to the 2 Wolverine Tournament controllers which I've had both for over a year and a half. I've only had the Chroma V2 for exactly a year. I think I'm going to go with a T4 Kaleid for my next controller for the extra durability and cheaper cost.

I just bought a chroma and waiting for shipping. I had a raijyu tournament edition for my PS4, still holding strong after 4 years of heavy use. I love Razer's shell shape over original controllers, it feels like right stick is closer to the edge of the controller, and it helps in shooting games. also because of it's shape, you won't feel your wrist hurting as much. my only complain is that it's rubber wears too fast, I lost almost all rubber on my sticks, and those on the grips peels off easily, hopefully V2 chroma won't have the same problem 🤞

Ok there is no mechanical feel in the microsoft elite 2 series gamepad but bear this i mind: the ms elite core 2 series and the elite 2 black complete bundle, both have a unique feature no onther gamepad providers considered to install: the, adhustable thimbsticks stiffness. The 3 stages to adjust the thumsticks stiffness makes it almost impossible to raise stick drift even after thousands of gaming hours. The wolverine is technicaly better with much more higher quality materials, but the ergonomical functionality of the stiffer thumpsticks to stabilise all your movements and aiming plus heavy build up of elite 2 which weighs up to 150gramm heavier than chroma, makes the elite core 2 beyond comparison.

I had both .I use a wireless headset so I returned the ultimate..love the chroma!! As far as performance,I couldn't tell a difference..the mechanical buttons are a plus for sure!! I will say I like my rig revolution X better than both..all choices are better than the Xbox elite...I've seen cheap 20 dollar controllers last longer than that dung heap!

I got the wolverine ultimate recently and can confirm the back buttons do not but the extra bumpers on top do have the clicky sounds but im don't know how I feel about the rear bumpers since my hand is messed up and it feels awkward to rest my fingers on them its a personal problem for me but if you have small hands this controller might not be for you if you haven't bought it yet

My only issue with the original wolverine ultimate is the dpad. I don't like how either of the options feel, it's as if it requires too much force to push and it's not easy and clicky the way the series X default controller feels. But I like everything else a lot with the wolverine.

I disagree that V2 Chroma has "Better" face buttons, they're terrible, the only problem I have with that shitty controller, the facebuttons require so much force that it's painful to use them for longer periods of time. Btw did you test the deadzone tightness of razer wolverine controller? (not the chroma)

I have the Razer Wolverine Ultimate but it's got stick drift & the RB doesn't register all the time or occasionally register double presses which messet up timed reloads in Gears 5. So I got the Razer Wolverine V2 which is unplayable in both Gears 5 and Halo Infinite. Why, because it's such a slow controller for fast online games - the A, B, X, Y require much effort to press and buttonmashing is really, really slow. It just feel less precise, slow and impossible to play good with. The Wolverine V2 is a crap controller for competitive online gaming, but honestly works fine for offline gaming. I've been playing Assasin Creed Origins and Chained Echoes w.o any problems.. but can't play for shit online against others in Gears 5 or Halo Infinite. So avoid the Wolverine V2 &/ Corona if you (gonna) play online games mostly.

Grabbed the Wolverine V2 based on your review, mostly to get used to the feel of the Chroma (as I never could get a feel for the buttons). When the clicky M1 bumper went out this week, I went ahead and grabbed the Ultimate because everyone says it's the bees knees (and it DOES feel more like a Xbone/Series controller), but so far, the first two Amazon has sent have some severe stick drift out of the box. Going to try ONE MORE TIME before I give up and cry myself to sleep over the price of a Scuf, because otherwise, this controller is gas.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT buy this controller. I bought this controller a few years back and it's been terrible. When it arrived it immediately had stick drift on the right stick. I was able to send it back and get a new one, but the new one arrived with stick drift on BOTH sticks, and they would not send me another replacement. Within a year, the A and X buttons stopped working. All of the paint for the buttons are now worn off. Both bumpers essentially spam their inputs a few times, so pressing RB or LB once presses it multiple times. My RB has officially stopped working entirely. These controllers are pieces of shit and are not worth the money.

You got that right the new chroma v2 whatever controller is way to big and heavy ..it says in the box its 10ms input delay but that's the same as the ultimate. THE ULTIMATE FEELS MORE RESPONSIVE OVERALL .better .

I had to force returned v2 Chrome after few days, it's very big disappointment, the ergonomic, grip material, the trigger design, the rubber trigger missing, abxy button x2.5 time harder than the ultimate version (too bad for long time playing I prefer plastic button like DS controller than this mechanical button)... after wolverine ultimate all of them are trash, not worth to "pro"

I have both, the ultimate is hands down better. Pro vs toy, no comparison.

Why? I just bought them both and I don't see such a difference, only thing I find worse in the new one other than shape are the triggers, I can barely notice the difference when using the trigger stoppers, and they have no rumble but I don't even use that. Ultimate feels better in hand because of the shape but it is made of similar plastic, it doesn't work on Android (the V2 chroma does), and the cable is bad on both, the V2 chroma's USB C inlet doesn't have something to stop the cable from moving so you have to be very careful or it will eventually fail, and the ultimate doesn't fit regular micro USB cables so you have to buy expensive ones with the correct shape when the included cable dies. They both have very heavy cons in my opinion. Edit: Oh, and the face buttons are quite harder to press in the V2 chroma, I guess that could be another negative if you have to press a button very fast.
