The VQ is a timing chain version of the VG without FI. The VR just adds that FI back to the VQ. Tada, modern VG as the VR.

Props for mentioning the SE-R sentra. I had a 93, new in 94 and it was a blast! Power shifting at over 7k, front drive drifts, j turns, ..... yeah, that little car put up with a lot abuse. Not the fastest in a drag race, but awesome to fling around corners.

I've had both engines and they share a lot of components. In my experience in modifying both for over 25 years, the major issue I'd found with the vg was space... or lack of. The current powerplant in my R33 runs a 3 litre block from the VL Commodore as mentioned in this video stroked out to 3.4 litre matched to a RB25det head with a RB26 solid lifter conversion... she pushes out 437kw to the wheels....

As an Australian I appreciate the shout out to the RB30 powered VL Commodore. The next model after the VL, the VN Commodore was supposed to have the RB30 in it as well but the appreciating exchange rate of the Japanese Yen against the Australian Dollar made the RB30 too expensive so Holden had to ditch the RB30 at the last minute and put the Buick 3800 in the VN Commodore.

it actually was a ford/holden war,the XFN ford/nissan ute was supposed to use the RB as well but ford and holden didmnt want to share the engine,public did not accept a australian car with a japanses engine back in the 80's

It's funny you say that when the original reason the VL got the RB was because the Holden 6 that can trace its routes back to 1948 couldn't pass the emissions regulations of 1986 and the V6 Holden was planning to use wasn't ready yet, so the VL got the RB and the VN the 3.8. Though "wasn't ready yet" could've been because the engine factory had to be retooled to start building V6s, which takes years to do

@@MuscleCarLover They weren’t really ready to use the Buick V6 at the time of the VNs release. I think they were hoping to have a bit more development time and introduce it with the VP but their hand was forced by the poor exchange rate. I used to own a series one VN and you could tell that it was hastily converted to rear wheel drive as it had tubular steel pipes all over the place to run the coolant lines to the correct place for a rear wheel drive application.

Same here with my 02 Nissan frontier, vg33 with the supercharger. There automatic transmissions are also known to be very durable. Still going strong here in 2023, 4 door long bed.

I loved the 300 ZX31 . I owned 3 of them , all very good ( one with more than 420.000 km, no oil losses, full power nearly everything still in order ). Very reliable V6 with very low fuel consumption , high speed max 255 km/h . The open roof Targa driving feeling was perfect. The Z32 was very beautiful - to my oppinion one of the most elegant designs at all - but not comparable concerning low fuel consumption and difficult to repair ( no space to act and very complicated - too many different materials with different thermal behaviour -, early engine problems , but also extremely powerful , I owned two of them, one had an engine fail when I bought it with 120.000 km , tried to repair and gave up, but a well experienced Z32 specialist bought it and was able to tune it beyond 400 hp, and vmax=295 km/h ). A gone and happy era.

VG30 has one throttle body per bank. And the VH45 has sodium valves too. The RB26 has two exhaust manifolds. The follow up to the VG30, the VQ30, was Nissans race car engine. 300ZX also has all wheel steering.

That's not how a sodium-filled valve works, that's how a heat pipe works. Sodium filled valves are half-filled with sodium and the sloshing of it's operation carries the heat from the head to the upper section of the stem, no boiling involved.

Alfa,s 4 banger twin cam engines had sodium valves on the intake and exhaust ,back in the 60,s, the factory book said not to reface the valve, you were supposed to cut the stem off to release the sodium and toss em in the bin, plus the valve seat angle was 46,so you had to hand finish every seat and valve with really fine lapping compound

I've owned lots of old Skylines and Z cars but all had L series motors except for my Z31 which had a VG30 of course. It was nice to drive but one thing that killed their popularity here in Australia was that the Z had a different intake manifold and injection system than the Maxima, etc, in order to have more power and responsiveness. Only trouble was that if you had dirty injectors they would leak and fuel would pool in the manifold. Many 300Zs burnt to the ground and we turned back to Skylines well before Gran Turismo was a thing.

There were Nissan Skylines built in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong, they had a factory out there. If you find a Skyline with a "6" at the beginning of the VIN, it was made in Australia.

The pinnacle of the VG is actually the VR38DETT which we all know are now being modded up to 2000-3000+ hp in GTR’s. Plus the VQ series are incredible in their own right. I put 205,000 miles on my 3.5 altima and there was never a day I didn’t drive it with the pedal to the floor wringing out each gear to redline. It was still running strong the day I traded it in and the only failure it ever had was a cam position sensor at 150k miles which is a ridiculously cheap and easy thing to fix.

LONG LIVE THE VG30!! I'm an 80's guy, owned 6 300ZXs. Even with limited computing back then, we were getting 400-500hp frequently out of VG30ETs. I realize NOW that's no big deal... But in the 80's to early 90's - that was SOMETHING! I hope those old 300Zs DON'T become flipper/Tuner darlings. Then they will also become UNOBTAINABLE by the average person.

Idk if anyone in the 90's or early 00's were fooled into thinking 240sx's were "fast" lol. Back around 02-03 you'd be lucky if you could sell a 13 year old KA powered S13 for 1000 bucks. Sure the S14 did command a higher price at the time but it was also still a fairly new car. The S13's struggled to keep up with n/a Honda's and weren't really seen as a viable platform unless you were willing to build your own conversion harness to run an SR swap and even then it still wasnt going to win trophys at the drag strip. It wasnt until maybe 2008 or so, or whenever Formula-D came to the US that aftermarket vendors really started making parts that allowed the S13's to become real a condender. Even just 5 years ago there was almost zero aftermarket for the VG30et and Z31, but that whole market has opened up in a way I never thought I'd see...and just in-time too cuz I just got a turbo Z31 and an N/A that both run, both are 5spd 2+0 models and neither of them are rusty. The best part is they were free cuz I gave away a 280Z 9 years ago to a guy who is finally "repaying the favor"...not that I ever asked for anything in return but damn ^_^

Eh, a three-cylinder works perfectly as long as the two outer pistons are half the size of the center piston and are operated as one, so the engine functionally becomes a balanced two cylinder. Then add a temporal torque transfer device (a radial magnet stator and a bar magnet rotor, which are shaped to subtract torque during power strokes and add it back in during non-power strokes). Now you have a three-cylinder engine with perfect balance that is smoother than a straight six.

VG30et all the way. I love the RBs, but there is something about the VGs that you just don't get from modern V6s. Also, the V-series wasn't abandoned at all. If anything, the aftermarket had to pick up the slack due to Nissan abandoning the RB-series. The only reason you guys pay 150k for a forged built RB is because no modern alternatives exist. Yall got this shit completely switched up.

Man I don't know. Like I don't disagree with your breakdown but the VG and RB have always sat in the same place in my mind and heart. I am mostly an American V8 kinda guy, but that doesn't mean I don't love me some JDM. I have owned a 300z TT and a couple 240's with RBs 4 and 6 cylinder versions at that. I really love them both. They both make awesome power, they are both a blast to drive, and they both make amazing sounds.

As always, the production is excellent, HOWEVER I've got some "technical inaccuracies" warning bells going off in my head... so like a good keyboard warrior I'm just gonna spit out my unresearched information in the comment section. Sue me. 1. The animation of the firing order on the RB... there are NOT multiple cylinders firing simultaneously in this engine. 2. I don't believe the sodium vaporizes, rather, doesn't it just liquify and float up and down within the hollow of the valve?

Great video guys!!! US VG history goes pretty deep and a lot of it goes into grassroots racing. VG30E/T notably for the Z31... But as you look into it, The S12's got a limited run with the VG30e as well. Again, besides the Z31 for the sohc VG and the DOHC VG for the Z32, it largely goes unnoticed. Being a fan of the VG and a car that some don't know much about stateside, the Infiniti M30 is a vg30e (with AT). In Japan, the F31 Leopard had the whole range of VG20/30 except the Vg30e (and the Leopard owners love it because of the response). Same with the Ced/Glo/Cima of the same era. They had the VG30DE/and DET in the top level of the F31 leopard (Ultima). But when you really think about it, Nissan made 2, twin turbo, 6 cylinder engines at the same time and that to me is pretty bad ass. Personally, I love the VG series and as my leopard brothers say in Japan, "heart of the leopard is the VG". While tuning can be done, RB engines get all the love because of the reason explained, we (Americans) never got the RB or the Skyline and it was romanticized with how it used to be un-obtainable or the games or the videos. I will add, I am rebuilding an rb25det with forged and upgraded a lot of components as well as rebuilding the M30 that it was swapped in (Project Car Magazine M30) and Geezus the RB is expensive to build. I'm not sponsored, or have hook ups or part of drifting.... so everything I've done was out of pocket. But the M30 I got was the most famous within the US F31 history. Other than that, I would have loved to swap in a VG30DET into an M30 to make it close to the a Japanese Leopard. f31club.com

Jeremiah watup bro..speaking on long vs short.. if long easier to break... why does the 2jz handle more power from an upgrade on its engine with stock engine internals as opposed to the vg version.?? And I think the 2Jz n RB are two best tuning platforms... 2Jz may have the edge

Nissan VG30 and VG33 are a pain in the ass to work on. Overcomplicated intake manifold with vacuum lines for days. Little room to work in engine bay

VG/Q/R>RB being in a V configuration and shorter in length means it has a lower COG and the bulk of the weight being further back means better handling.
