www.RCSparks.com - I got THiS TRUCK at store.rc4wd.com Here is some iNFO about this Radio Controlled Truck Kit, PUT YOURSELF on the WAiT List! goo.gl/6saNzA In this video I learn how to do some detail painting. I have always wanted to try it out - and figured this would be a perfect opportunity to try my luck! I also wanted to try out a different kind of Masking/Skinning of my Gelande 2. Though I am not the first to try this technique, I wanted to give it a test. I think the end result turned out pretty well! I used "Testers" Enamel paints - used for normal modelling. For my purpose - it seems to work out just fine.
Total Cost for this Particular Rig: Approximately $1200 (You could do it for less)
Kit: 399+ Shipping
ESC & Motor: 240
Servo: 65
Paint & Accessories: 75
Rx Tx: 250
Battery: 70
Punisher Drive Shafts: 80
Spare Tire/Rim: 30
The top cage I used on my rig was hand made, and is not available for sale. Sorry!
I ordered another Rim and Tire for the Spare Tire. It does not come with the truck stock.
From the RC4WD Site:

Great job, mate. Looks fantastic. One suggestion for the windows and windscreen. The fully transparent plastic sheets look terrible, especially the thick windscreen which creates a very obvious white frame due to the distorsion of the thickness. One thing you could do to improve it is to take the color of the body-paint and paint the width-edges of windows in car color to vanish the appearance when looking at the car, but just leaving the visible surfaces of the windows. Same for the windshield and there you could even paint the frame to just leave the window surface visible.

tip for your detail painting .. especially bolt heads/rivets ... toothpick ... they don't hold as much paint as even a very fine paintbrush ... so you can get the same dot each time without the random dollop that you do from a brush. looks good! can't wait for the trail vids, one addict to another :D

Ok thanks for the help. I have been looking around and I want to get the SCX10 Jeep Wrangler RTR as my first rc truck. I plan to get the Trail Finder 2 shortly after. I watched your video and I plan to "water proof" any rc truck I get. I have seen some one put a balloon over the the receiver and closed it up with some zip ties. hey dj Got a little tip for ya. when detailing small objects. you can use small blue painters tape. it works good if you wanted to get on the sides of those hinges. just a tip. The truck came out great. I really like the look of it. I think you did a great job.

I am a model car builder and have much experience in that hobby. So heres a tip. Next time do not use that testors tube glue, it is very crappy glue. Use something like plastruct bottle glue. Thats what i use on my cars. Also you can save a lot of money by just buying the little testors paint bottles separate instead of the moving orange thing. Very nice by the way.

Great work on the painting.... but for those that don't want to or can't get a chance to get a tiny paint brush for the fine details of bolts etc. Try using toothpicks... I've never went into detail as for RC's but used that technique on painting model cars/trucks/etc.

I can tell you that the plastidip will not hold up to a scrape or flip, but neither does paint so I say use it. Just recoat the whole vehicle or part you paint because it peels unlike paint. ;) I used it on my Axial Exo Terra Buggy panels and I think it looks stealthy. Great job for your first custom paint job. I like it a lot. Black is my favorite color.

Thanks for the help man! I am going to run that setup since I don't know a lot about rc cars. I have been looking around and I decided that I want to get a SCX10 Jeep Wrangler RTR, then shortly after get a trail finder 2. I watched that video you put the link in the comments and another one of you water proofing videos. I am going to do all the water proofing to every rc truck I get. I was watching shawnroy81's youtube videos of his trail finder 2 build, he did some thing I have never seen in any water proofing video. Over his receiver he stretched a balloon and closed it up with some zip ties. It seems like a good idea. I watched one of his videos with that setup and he was going through some deep water. Here is a link to the video (The balloon part is at 2:45 if you don't feal like watching the whole video) RC4WD TrailFinder 2 Mojave Build Series PART 4 Final Assembly Video with the deep water: RC4WD TrailFinder 2 Mojave and Gelände II Defender D90 Rover Trail Run

Hi djmedic, youve inspired me to get into the RC world and to start with this kit,ive been watching the vids one at a time off the RC4WD product site.very well done, nice an clear.even a right moob can follow(i know this as im said "Moob"). i do have a suggestion for you and those out there in RC land, about the scratches on the front window you spoke of,you can mask off the windshield frame ( i noticed you left yours clear),and then either dip it,or very carefully paint on "future floor wax"( i think it has a new name now)and it will fill in the scratches and level out drying to a nice clear window,i havent tried it,but you might be able to tint the floor wax and gain tinted windows.another thing, when painting with paint rather than the plasti-dip,when youve gotten detailing ect done, spray it with the floor wax ,let dry completely, then decal your vehicle, dry, and then use more floor wax for a polished finish,or use something like testors dull coat,,or semi-gloss,this will hide the decal edges and look sharp.you can also use testors "gloss coat" ,decal, then gloss coat again for a nice shiney finish.

was thinking the front windshield would look bad ass if you took the plastic right out and did like a cross netting like on a 1:1 scale trophy truck, a great way to make that yourself is as simple as using shoe laces and crossing them over a couple stitches to hold them together, and you set, any ways either way its an awesome build and videos are great as always thanks for the time you put in to entertain us

Hey Medic, for the rear side windows you could use somthing called a snipers nest. It is part on a army snipers camo and comes in a big rectangle. One snipers nest could cover probly 30-40 of your rear side windows. Also for painting very small details I personaly use a sewing needle to paint rivets bolts and dashdoards. Hope this information helps. :)

one more thing i forgot to say....i would be sure to wash all the parts to be painted with a mild dish soap, get a dishwashing type plastic tub ,like for camping,,16"x12" ?..whatever the size is,just be sure it will hold it INSIDE,i soak the parts for a few minutes, then i use a paint brush like you would have for painting the trim on a bedroom door in your house..maybe 1" or 1 1/2" wide, and wash the parts with the warm soapy water using the brush, then rinse COMPLETELY with warm water (not hot) and let air dry for a couple days,in a tupperware or simular box lined with papertowels, and holes in the top for venting...just make sure to not allow dust to settle, then DO NOT touch the parts with you bare fingers,be sure to use rubber gloves.you dont want your skin oils to ruin your paint job..

For automotive paints the plasti dip will get hard and make it hard to come off. But I think with 3 or more coats of dip, then just a small layer of model enamel, I still think it'll will peel right off like normal. I know they make LOTS of colors. DipYourCarCom. They make neons, metallics, pearls, clearcoat(glossifier)... I've been into plasti dip for the last year and a half. I've done a full matte white 2006 Mitsubishi Evo MR.
