Looks at currents and voltages in an RC circuit just after the switch is closed and after the switch has been closed a long time. Shows how to use the golden rules about how a capacitor acts like a wire when the switch is first closed and how it acts like it is removed from the circuit (acting like an open circuit in fact) after the switch is closed a long time and the capacitor(s) has been fully charged. Also shows how to calculate the voltage on the capacitors after the switch has been closed a long time. In it you will see that one capacitor is charged and the other is not.

Beautiful explanation You could also find the voltage difference between the plates of 1st capacitor by creating a Kirchoff loop including 6ohm, 2ohm, and the 1st capacitor. Setting the eq. Vc-6*1-2*0=0 Therefore, Vc = 6V On the other hand, thank you for this nice video, sir!

Thanks so much for your explanation! I liked your analogy about capacitors acting like wires until they are fully charged. Helped me out quite a bit.

@@jjay11a I know it's two years late . but it's because at t=0 circuit is *just closed* so the charged that got *accumulated* in capacitor is almost zero .

ALAN GLODOWSKI without the LOAD, how much current in amps can a 4700uf hold store with a power supply DC voltage at +450vdc? the 4700uf filter cap will charge up to +450vdc but how much current is the 4700uf holding storing? What formula can I use to calculate how much current the filter cap is storing in amps?

Sir your solution for Current at t=0 is not appropriate. It should be 16/7 A in 2 ohm resistance. Plz reconsider. Regrets if I m wrong

Is there a way to calculate the time constante of such a circuit ? A simple circuit would be Tau = R*C .... but when you have multiple R and C components how do you calculate it ?

Only after ~5 effective time constants. Prior to this, current will be exponentially decaying in various loops while the capacitors are exponentially charging. Once the caps are charged (dV/dT ~0), then current is no longer flowing and Caps do indeed act like OCs. This is referred to as the "Transient Solution." and is usually not important other than to LEARN what is going on. AC Source designs seek to achieve the more important "Steady State" solutions. These topics are used to design filters (low pass, hi pass, band pass, notch, etc). But the systems can get so messy, that computer simulations (SPICE, MATLAB) and other freq response programs are used to evaluate the SS response.

I think you're wrong sir!! b/c capacitors behave open circuit to dc source not short circuit.
@YouKnowMeDuh
@YouKnowMeDuh 5 жыл бұрын
No, they act like shorts at t=0 and act like open circuits after a long time since no current can flow through them anymore. The current looks like exponential decay to zero at t>=0 when charging. Look up the graphs for this if you need a visual aid, it helps.
