I was very excited to try this when repainting my early model park zone T28. I disassembled and lightly sanded the entire plane with 220 grit sandpaper, cleaned the plane with denatured alcohol, then applied the purple labeled, mod podge hard coat. I applied three coats with a sponge brush, sanding with 600 sandpaper and cleaning dust off between coats with a micro fiber towel. The mod podge did apply a coating over the foam, but it was very thin, with the strength of old tissue paper. I continued in 70 degree weather and painted and clear coated with rustoleum 2X paints, it looked fine. As I was reassembling the plane I noticed that the mod podge, (along with the paint) was separating from the foam. I used the mod podge due to its low odor, which was fine, my wife never noticed the smell. In hindsight and in the future, I will be using a polyurethane, similar to minwax polycrylic.

I am going to have to try this Mod Podge material,it looks just the job to give a toughened surface coating,as ever Chris your video's continue to inspire others to build worthwhile scratch built models and keeping real model building alive, that is one highly impressive airliner model, thank you for demonstrating this product.

Most informative. As for Mod Podge, there is a huge family of coatings all with the that name on the label. But the labels are all in different colors. Probably, there is a version that is the preferred glue of collagists and kids doing class projects. So I will be looking for that purple label and the words "hard coat."

There are indeed around 8-10 Versions of Mod Podge Eliot and most are sold as glue, but this version is really a laminate protective cote, its good stuff indeed.

Does it have colour when dried ? I mean when I want that to be applied after I cover the plane with some sticker or paint will it change the colour looks ?

I've tried this stuff a few times and not really impressed. I've even tried 3 and 4 coats and it really never gets hard nor does it protect from simple dings and dents.

Great video, excellent tip! This could be just the stuff I've been looking for for quite a while!! A few questions, to make sure it really is, though 😉: A. Will the hard cover be transparent when dried? B. Have you ever tried it on other foam material than depron / You think it will work the same with eps/epo? And finally, C: what area do you get covered out of that little bottle in the video, roughly? Many, many thanks in advance!!

I do have a couple of questions please, if you don't mind, as I am trying to get a feeling for when it's best to use this Mod Podge hard coat product. So I would like to know, how does the application you demonstrate on this video, compares with the following foam-strengthening alternatives: 1) Coat the depron area with thinned wood glue and paper ( either brown craft paper or packing paper ) 2) Coat the depron area with Minwax polycrylic either straight or with light fiberglass cloth and polycrylic ? 3) Coat the depron area with paper as in option 1 plus brush on a couple of Polycrylic coats on top of the paper once it's dry ? I would very much appreciate your feedback and I am thankful in advance for the time you take to answer my questions. Excellent video by the way and excellent craftsmanship.

So glad you evolved from the packing tape I really enjoyed your builds on RCG until you stuck them with that horrible tape. I was introduced to Modge in the 80's by my sister who worked in the arts and crafts store and I would coat my styrofoam parts and even balsa leading edges and wing tips - it is a great product but I've come to realize that you just can't beat the Minwax method for that truly knock knock hard finish but I do like Modge for depron

You are right, nothing beats the MinWax👍

Thanks for the tip. Would you feel that fiberglassing using Mod Podge HC as the resin will be of great benefit to a large, hotwired low density eps foam fuse?

Best thing I've found is Super 77 dusted onto cloth, position coth onto the surface, then wick thin CA onto cloth, smooth with a finger in a baggie, hit with accelerator. I also use kevlar, not fiberglass. Kevlar will stretch and not shatter like fiberglass. Kevlar is essentially nylon. Very light (1.7 oz and 5 oz cloth) and abrasion resistant. My application is for UAV airframes though so it might be a little different from what you're doing. Fiberglass, when combined with epoxy, is pretty heavy, and it will crack and shatter. My kevlar fuses will get dinged up a little on rough landings, but everything stays in tact to fly another day. 1.7 oz on leading edges and places where the wings get handled a lot. Fine grit sandpaper to knock down the edges and prep it for primer. I'm always looking for better methods though. I wasted a lot of hours going down the epoxy/fiberglass method though, only to produce a hard, but fragile, heavy airframe. As with anything DIY, ymmv. You can see lots of examples of this method on rcgroups (where I learned about it).

It is exactly the same as Elmers white glue, plus it leaves heavy streaking from the paint brush. A much better option is air brushing a water soluble poly acrylic like MinWax, works great and no streaks even with a foam brush.

@@LWJCarroll Sorry but I have it right in front of me. It is water based and it is white, yes it dries to a fairly hard finish originally for coating pictures and such. But it is water based and white.
