RC Gaff Cutter 'Flyer' Show & Tell

Scratch Built RC Sailboat. Built to the ‘Flyer’ design from
www.bearospacei...
This boat is plywood over bulkhead like the other Bearospace designs.
What sets the Cutter apart from the other Bearospace boats is the sail plan which has 2 (or 3) overlapping headsails. These headsails require a second winch system below decks. The skipper must pull the headsails around to the other side each time the boat tacks, creating a whole new level of involvement for the Skipper when sailing.

Gary, I picked up two of your plan's. I printed this one on a regular size paper sheet. And rounded her lines for stripped wood. Just to see if it would work. Love the shape and she is beautiful as intended. Still have not built but I will soon. Also intending on building a larger unit with round hull... about 12ft long so I can play while inside. Any how it's a great designe anyone could build with patience and time and come out with something that will turn heads every time it gets wet. Nice job!!!!!!!

Hello Gary, building your Flyer I've managed to put on some weight. Ten lbs less sail and electric gear, means the bulb on the keel needs to be eight lbs. Thinkiing I might wack off the front part ahead of the center board plate to reduce weight and elminate a weed catcher. Your thoughts Sir.

What a beautiful model thank you for posting it. Can you please tell me how you made the keel removable? Also I really like the way you did the shroud connection to the deck and if you dont mind Im going to copy that feature on a boat Im building for my as yet unborn Great Grandson.

The keels aluminum plate with a lead bulb cast on. It fits loosely into a trunk in the hull. The trunk extends above the waterline, and the keel is held in with 2 pins at the top of the trunk. Gary, I bought one of your "Flyer" plans. Real good info, however you do not show where to belay the sheet for the topsail. I have tried and tried to see where you tied it off, but in the videos it is difficult to discern. Would be nice to see where it goes. Cheers.

Hi Carlos, I'll assume you are referring to the MAIN topsail. The lower corner (tack) of the main topsail slightly overlaps the gaff and has a long line which belays to the Fife Rail (aft pin, port side). The clew of the main topsail (corner near the end of the gaff) is simply connected to the gaff with either a loop of twine or a zip-tie. Sheeting for the JIB topsail is fairly well shown on the plans. More details of rigging halyards & sheets can be found on the last page of the instruction booklet included with the plans. There are 2 sail winches aboard. One sheets all 3 headsails together, the other sheets the mainsail. Thanks for asking.

Gary, Carlos here again, Need a little bit of help and information on rigging the winch line for the head sails on Flyer.I know it goes to channel 5 on the radio , but where on the winch line are the sheets attached to? Are they in the middle of the travel , or offset one forward and one aft? The servo only goes one way, and I can not figure it out. Also, is there a way to unattach the sheet lines on deck for transporting? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, CJG

Thanks for asking, the plywood hull, inside & out, is first coated with penetrating epoxy, then primed and painted with brushed on oil based enamels.

I found that his splendid creations, illustrated very well in excellent videos, are based on projects by bearospaceindustries. They are very efficient projects and navigation is always very fluid and elegant. I also noticed that the rudder is oversized compared to a 1:1 scale. I imagine this is out of necessity. I built an RC model that can sail and sail. It is a historical reproduction, loosely based on the USS Unadilla class gunboats, which were schooner steamers.
