Great tips and video. Probably too late to have this question seen, but i'll throw it out. I'm in the process of doing this with MY Apprentice. I'm interested to know what "color" Folkart paint you used to closely match the patina of the Apprentice surfaces? Thank you

It is just the basic white as that tends to blend in better with the foam. I find it cleans up really well if it gets dirty too. I just uses it on my Pawnee Brave after stuffing it in a row of pine tress. The wings stayed up in the branches for over a month before the wind finally got them down. I used minimal spackling and paint. The wiring was a nightmare because it is internally illuminated with strip LED's. I haven't remaidened it yet but am confident it will fly as normal.

@@scottfirman Thanks very much - yes, I managed to hit a pine tree at about 40 ft. up. But it slid down and able to retrieve it after navigating a swamp. I have it pretty much repaired but was glad to see your video as I was trying to figure out how to finish the surface to look better. Thanks again,

This method of repairing dents and fill in small holes using spackling compound. A smooth wing flys better than dents or holes that affect coefficientcy.

thank you for watching my video, I do appreciate it. I hope this helps you or someone else you may know. My Apprentice ended up in a huge maple tree and I pretty much destroyed it. Sadly, it was so full of holes from my mini cross bow and fishing line as well as damage suffered from breakage removing it , after 4 years I decided it was beyond repair. Every plane has its limits on repairs.

@@scottfirman Too true. yes I've used your tips and managed to repair my FMS superEZ. I have given it a new splash of paint, too.

@@nickhayley I cannot take total credit for all of what I showed, there are others that showed great tips also besides myself. Glad you were able to repair and hopefully fly again. I took the acess hatch from my E- Flite Maule to lowes and they were able to match up the paint perfectly! I couldn't be happier as the Maule has a very specific color. I spent hours shopping for paint at every craft store to no avail. Now I can know any future repairs are no problem and any touch up are going to look right every time.

I had to shoot 6 holes in my Apprentice trying to get it down out of a large Maple tree two weeks ago. I will probably fill the holes and get it going. Somehow it lost connection to the transmitter. It got a lot of Tree rash and the tail section snapped off getting it down. It may be beyond much hope.

how do you repair a large hole in the wing

Are you talking balsa or foam? If you are talking foam its easy. Take a sheet of paper towel and get it damp. Then roll it in drywall spackling. Carefully stuff the hole with the patch, dont pack it too tightly, foam is lightweight because it has air pockets. I would go with as minimal a sheet as possible and use lightweight filler. After you patch had dried, you can start layering in the patching compound. Fill, let dry. You can then prime and paint. I hit a high tention wire with my maule and put a sizable dent in the wing. The hot water expanded the foam back out and I used spackling to finish filling what didnt expand back. I also put a hole in my Apprentice fuselage with a branch from an apple tree. I used the paper towel method to fill that hole. It works well for ripped out cabains on a biwing too. I used epoxy soaked paper towel to fill the hole, then sanded and redrilled the new hole. That was on my Dynam WACO.
