I have just started to build Flyer, my 2nd Gary design. Annie was my first RC boat model ever, and she’s perfect. So now I’m tackling this beautiful design.

Thanks for the video.... Fitted it on my boat with a gaff rigg. First sail today and it was so much fun! Once I worked out what side I was tacking to it was great. Some minor trimming adjustments needed but it worked a treat!! Just watching your video again.... The operation of your head sails in that dock is so smooth.... My installation is retrofitted onto an existing boat so operates on the deck where I'm suffering from stuff for the sheets to get caught on. The look under sail is much more realistic than the typical front boom setup, and more fun to sail!

I have that radio and it is easy to remove the centering spring from the right side controller. That way both levers can control the sheets. Open the back and you can see how it works. There is a KZbin video on how too remove the centering device. I added a piece of plastic to give a bit of traction to the lever and its not so flippy floppy.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and know how on model sailboats ⛵ when I finish building my 12 foot sailing scow I'd like to tackle a model sailboat. I really like your sailboats. I live about 20 minutes from a park on a lake with a public dock. It would be fun to drop a model in when I had time. I'm retired so I've got lots of time.

Hi Gary, Great video and I am trying to set this up on my boat. I messaged you before, but I am having trouble setting up my rig. My question still remains. Using your image to explain. If I let out the Blue trimming sheet, to sheet out the sail, won't the green lazy sheet simultaneously sheet in, meaning the sail will not sheet out?
@sailtails277510 ай бұрын
If the winch provides at least about 15 inches of travel, one sheet will always be slack before the other sheet pulls in. This slack in the lazy sheet will allow the sail to billow out when its working sheet is eased. Sorry about missing your message. Best way to contact me is by email. My email address can be found in fine print on the Bearospace website. Cheers !
@marcsilver699610 ай бұрын
Thanks again Gary. I am at sheet set up stage. I will try this out and see what happens. Otherwise I am thinking of adding another full sail winch, and I will sheet out, switch of the winch for the slack sheet and turn on the winch for the trimming sheet. I don’t want to be restricted on sheet out and sheet in. I’ll email you a pictures if you’re interested.
@marcsilver6996 Жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, love the video and have been looking for a way to manage a headsail sheeted from behind the mast, as I am building a scale model of Comanche. I was looking to do the same as you, but I have one question. In this set up, it seems your sheet length is set. If you let out sheet on the port side it will be pulled to starboard by the opposing internal pulley. I need to be able to sheet out. Am I missing something?
@sailtails2775 Жыл бұрын
Good question, there is a simple answer. There must be enough winch travel so that when the sail is sheeted in on one side (by the working sheet) there is adequate slack in the other (lazy) sheet. Thus, the working sheet can be let out a bit and the wind can fill the sail without being restrained by the lazy sheet. Hope that clears up your concern. Happy boat building !
@marcsilver6996 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply Gary. That’s the conclusion I came to mulling it over last night. I will set a mock up and give it a test to get the sheet lengths correct. I already have the dual servo set up. As I use this on all my boats. I use the knobs for both main and head sails, as the other stick is used to control the swing keel. Thanks again.

Hi, I sail my sailboat in the the sea, how can I prevent it from getting away if the wind stops or the RC stops working, what type of line can I attached to the boat
@sailtails27752 жыл бұрын
Attaching a line could be problematic, such as becoming wrapped up around the rig or the rudder due to the boat maneuvering as sailing boats do. I suggest an inspection ashore, including a radio range check, to assure she is ship shape before setting off on the high seas. If the wind stops, she won't go far till the wind picks up again.

Would it be possible to put reef points in the main and take foresails off easily for windy conditions?
@sailtails27753 жыл бұрын
Both the main top sail and the jib top sail can be easily removed, leaving her to sail with her "lowers" in heavy wind conditions. A characteristic of the gaff cutter is that she balances well with or without the top sails. I have not tried reef points or further sail reduction, as she holds up well this way.

Have 1/4''' plate aluminum were I to make the trunk to fit would that impact the performance of the Flyer?
@sailtails27753 жыл бұрын
I do not think there would be a noticeable difference. Simply make the opening in the trunk about 1/16" (1.5 mm) wider than the thickness of the aluminum fin. Happy boat building !

All the sails cannot be controlled together from the throttle stick, can they?
@sailtails27752 жыл бұрын
Ahoy Paul, the mainsail is controlled by the "throttle stick" while the 3 headsails are controlled (all 3 together) by a separate channel using a knob on the transmitter. Keeps the skipper busy.
