Wow, that last jump looked really great! This looks like it’ll be feasible to improve flight characteristics! Thank you for doing this project, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a couple years now but I’ve still yet to get a 3D printer...I have so many projects I’d love to do. So thank you for doing this series 🙏

well done. Tom, you've got tools, resources, wit, and opportunity. If I had those things at your age! Well, let's say this: Challenge yourself. Think outside the box. Do what hasn't been done. Engineering degree, yes, get one. More importantly, look beyond. New inspirations tend to be accidental, and discoveries made whilst endeavoring to do something ordinary. Have fun. Avoid what happened to me. Don't let anyone hold you back.

I suspect it needs some forward momentum (i.e. don't drop from a hover or virtual hover), and weight does not scale like dimensions do, so it probably needs to be as light as possible.

Wing suits are made of cloth mate, the cloth provides loft and loft helps catch the wind and propel the skydiver foreword, what you hAve made here is more like the rigid jet pack suits that have a turbine engine for propulsion, try making the wings out of the parachute material, keep the motorized arms and give that a go.
@evahxh
@evahxh 6 жыл бұрын
That would be called lift. Not loft.
@RyanPine
@RyanPine 6 жыл бұрын
FirebugPlays actually there is no way to get lift if your falling out of the sky with no propulsion, it’s called Loft, it helps catch wind in the fabric and in return moves the diver foreword through the air like a parachute. There is no LIFT when flying a wing suit unless it’s a turbine jet suit.

You started to get a better glide once you have sorted the CG, that allows the wingsuit to gain enough airspeed, due to slightly nose heavy setup and the initial free fall. Ideally, you should drop it from a higher altitude, letting your wingsuit to increase the airspeed and after at least 10 meters of free fall, you should start to control it. Trust me, I've built 9 prototypes of my X-37ABC before obtaining a proper glide and it also took a few drop tests to achieve a decent flight. For comparison, you'll find the plans on Instructables website.

In my VERY limited (went indoor skydiving ONCE) experience I learned that yaw is controller by your hands, and your forward momentum(?) is controlled by the angle where your knees bend. I know this is an old video, but it might be cool if you could revisit this.

Not really true for belly flying. FS you use both arms and legs to yaw and forward and backward is also with both arms and legs. They grossly simplify things for your first wind tunnel experienec.

@alexmitchell331
@alexmitchell331 6 жыл бұрын
theres a thing called common sense that most skydivers have. At terminal velocity in a belly to earth orientation, I fall at roughly 130mph which is 1000ft every 5 seconds. I deploy at 4k feet so if i have some sort of malfunction i still have some time to execute my emergency procedures. Learn to skydive and it will make sense
@TheRustAdmin
@TheRustAdmin 6 жыл бұрын
No need to be so rude, if you had common sense, you would know that there is an apostrophe in the word "there's". But seeing as you instead wrote "theres" as the first word of your reply, I'm guessing you don't have much of it.

3d printing is a super heavy method for constructing something like this. In your last video when you said the weight to surface area scaled properly you forgot how air doesnt scale. To get similar results to an actual wingsuit man you would need your model to be significantly lighter than what would be proportional to its height.
@Enginair
@Enginair 6 жыл бұрын
Thats interesting, Ive never heard of that. I am simply speaking from the many places I have observed this in my experience with rc. Theory is fun but what really matters is how it actually works in practice. (You cant deny that making it lighter would give it a better glide slope, thats all im really saying here)
@thomassouthern23

Sorry Dave your'e wrong scaled down aircraft cannot weigh the scale weight of the full size aircraft and be able to fly. For example the Extra 300l aerobatic monoplane has a max gross takeoff weight of 2095lbs if you were to scale it to 1/4 scale and scale its weight by 1/4 the resulting scale model would weigh 524lbs. Quarter scale Extra 300's are common place in the radio control hobby, and they have a max gross takeoff weight of about 16lbs. The difference in weight has to do with amount of air molecules passing over a given airfoil known as Reynolds number. More info can be found here www.nasa.gov/pdf/601262main_ModelingFlight-ebook.pdf check out pages 12 and 13
@ninjaed13
@ninjaed13 6 жыл бұрын
It's also relevant in scaling models as aerodynamic performance varies drastically with Reynolds numbers due to differing levels of influence by viscosity, However, a factor I don't think Thomas has considered is linear vs quadratic vs ternary relations. If you half the wingspan you divide the wing area by four and decrease volume by a factor of 8. So, assuming a quarter scale wingspan extra 300l could generate the same lift per wing area as the "real deal" its take off weight would be 130lbs, still a far cry from the real value of 16lbs but closer (still miles off though).
@jamesadams893

You would think tom would know all about that stuff as he is taking courses in aeronautics
@Hyperus
@Hyperus 4 жыл бұрын
@@thomassouthern23 1/4th the scale does not equal 1/4th the weight, as the aircraft would 1/4 on all 3 axis. The actual weight would therefore be at below 33 pounds.

DUUDDDEE!!! Major tips: 1. The center of mass and gravity of a human is ruffly between the shoulders and the hip. 2. You should try making a " Distance Wingsuit . This is basically a Wingsuit where the arm wings are conected to the legs. 3. Arms turn the wingsuit left to right while the legs control pitch. IE. The arms don't control decent. 4. The arms, legs, and body all have the same length. HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL. Also the arms are too short and angled too far back.
