Today I'm finishing up the paintwork on my RC4WD TrailFinder2.I want it to look as 80's as possible, so I went for a clashing-color-paintscheme in red and blue, with some very linear graphics. The panel division on the sides is something that just happened along the line, if you want to do a custom design on a hardbody, just go with what feels right to you.
Compared to lexan, a hard body has one huge difference: you can just keep adding to it until you are pleased with the result. As long as you have tape and time, adding new features to your design is no problem, just keep it up until you are at the point where you want to clearcoat it. Making test samples of your paint will give you a good indication on drying time for the paint, in general 2 to 3 hours is more than enough to move on to the next step. Remember that patience is the key to good result, and spraying too thick of a coat is the worst that can happen.
Now to get this rig ready for the trails I had read up a little on how to prepare and paint up a hard body. This is a first time for me doing this, so I'm very excited to have learned something new. There were a few minor problems I ran into when getting into all the details of mocking up the Mojave body, however: so far this car is just excellent. I know the pricetag might scare some people off, but you absolutely get your money's worth!
I have purchased this kit at TGN Distributing, make sure to visit their homepage to check out the massive line of products they offer. If you are local, in Exeter California drop by Exeter Hobbies, which is their store, where they also have a great indoor offroad track for tenth scale cars, and regular race nights.

Hey Nic, thank you for having a look at them! You will be fine to just spray the yellow over the dark blue. As long as the blue is a nice, even non-transparant coat, the yellow will have not a chance to show through. Afterwards indeed, back it all with the white. The best thing about finishing off with white is it makes it easy to clean afterwards, and to see if you missed a spot. Have fun painting! :)

Hey Jonny, glad you dropped by. :) 1. I will be using a roofrack to hold the items down in the future, for now I just dropped them in the bed. 2. I might actually do one of those in the future, to show what I've gathered over the years, some of it goes as far back as 1998!

Thank you, Brandon! There are a lot of forums where the members can answer that question way better than I can at the moment. I don't have any experience with a double motor setuprunning off a single ESC, but it sure sounds you are planning an amazing project. Join rcsparks, rccrawler or one of the many other forums to share your projects, I'd love to see it!

Hey cml1980, cool to see you swing by again! I used the TS paint for the hard body. It's not that different from PS when it comes to technique, yet the chemicals in the can totally are. I need to experiment over time with tints and color, but love working "the wrong way around". Certainly a nice change from the lexan!

You can use lexan paint on the outside of a shell as well, but I don't think the clear will do much. Be prepared for it to chip and flake off as you run your car, if you want another option, you could also look into getting a wrap. Thank you for writing a comment and good luck on your project! :)

I sure did! I went for a very light rub with the polish, and wax afterwards. In the future, once it gets scuffed, I might rub the paint a bit through to give it that worn, overpolished look that you would see on a thirty year old car that has been pampered a bit too often.

Hey man, great work as usual. And yes that was a good laugh, (I had to share it with my wife). I've followed your work for awhile now and it's always superb; unique and classic works of art. My dad did paint and auto body on full scale vehicles and I've done some myself, (mostly rc). I can really appreciate the skill and talent it takes to achieve the level of quality work you produce. I am definitely interested in employing your services for a custom paint job. It would be something along the lines of a 1/5 FG. I'm not quite ready yet so I'm talking about the future, about a year, (hopefully sooner). Also I'm in the USA, (Texas) but i think/ hope it would be worth it for both you and i. Don't get me wrong, I don't exactly have money to burn but I'm definitely serious about this and would love to discuss this further with you, if you think it's possible. Sincerely, Christian
