Just imagine sealing myself in my room with this in the 50s and binge watching OTA all day. Nice hallicrafters s40 in the corner for a little shortwave listening as well would be nice.

Hopefully this is a helpful critique, I definitely get a lot more from the extended versions here, and is also the thing I've always enjoyed about your older series content

Looks like a hard one to work on>>not built for easy access when you have to pull the chassis out just to get at stuff and then worry about the 'picture bulb' as Shango calls them, falling out.

They make rubber deformable sanding blocks that you could use for gentle sanding on the curved tops like that set uses. I used to help my step dad at the body shop he worked at and we had the normal rubber sanding blocks and a DA air sander. Took me a while to get the knack of doing compound curves with the folded sound sand paper by hand. The set looks nice and looks nice all done 😎

Yes, I have some. I'm using very, very gentle pressure and prefer to do it by hand when sanding old finishes.

@@bandersentv I can see that, once you get used to following the contour you can feel how it's doing.

It's not even that. All I'm doing is scuffing the surface to remove surface contamination so the new lacquer will bond. I'm barely removing anything
@bandersentv
@bandersentv 23 күн бұрын
Just fold a scrap of sandpaper over and use your hand. All that's required is a light scuffing of the surface. You'll want to feel what your doing

Nice job... interesting, the 6sn7 caused the lack of high voltage. Hey, if you need a rear or bottom cover, Amazon has a selection of perforated sheet metal that could be painted black and look factory.

No, there was high voltage. The ion trap magnet was not position correctly. The leads were at their limit. I had to rotate the crt. Thanks for the tip

Another great restore. Out of interest, do you find you have to provide a lot of "after repair service" for customers and that anything you repair for yourself seems to stay repaired a lot longer? But maybe with collectors who ask for the restore service are more clued in as to what to expect from a performance point of view once their set has been restored?

I put more effort into customers sets than my own and have never had a call back or provided any after repair service. I suspect most just use them occasionally to demonstrate and not use them daily

That's an impressive record. Considering the age and complexity of these sets. Especially as they have to be delivered back to the customer.

I say does your own stuff last longer, not because I think you put more effort into it but because you know what you did to fix it and what to expect from it.

Fantastic job as always, getting through all those twists and turns! What was causing the vertical linearity control to have no effect earlier on in your testing?

Bob, your talk on all RCA tubes leads me to ask a question. I 1st fooled around with old sets when i was 14 back in 1980. I used to ride my bike to tge local TV shops and buy tubes, capacitors, ect. It seemed every time Id buy a GE tube, it would always be bad when i got home. Of course all tube sales were final, and this happenrd at both tge RCA and Zenith shops. I was wondering if you've ever gad bad luck with GE tubes? To thus day i still try to avoid them.

Not especially. It's the late tubes like service master that I've found to be crap

I seemed to have had long term experience with occasionally having bad NOS Sylvania tubes, or bad ones in sets. Green print on them and the boxes.

After the first bad one, I would make them test it before taking it and WATCH them do it. I suspect that the shop is just ripping off a kid by putting a cleaned up dead tube in a box and selling it for new.

Probably not helpful, but they do make curved (as well as flexible) sanding blocks for automotive bodywork in case anyone runs into needing one for a cabinet like this.

Yes, but I don't recommend. It takes a very light touch. We're just scuffing the surface and you'll want to feel as you go. If there are some high spots, the block will dig into them.
