This is an RCA TR-70B recorder that I've had for a couple of years, and now it's at the head of the line to get up and running.
This video, while not the most exciting thing you've ever seen(now there's an understatement!), documents the first steps I do when starting work on a "new" machine.
If nothing else, you'll see a little of the inside of a TR-70 and perhaps get in a little extra nap time as well.
More to come as this machine progresses. I intend to put this machine online along with my original TR-70A and the two TR-70Cs seen in my previous videos, in my vintage tape transfer operation.
If you'd like more information on me and what I do, check out my website at:

Glad that the DOG respects your VTR and did not take a leak on it.

I can't believe what came out of that thing... It must be very therapeutic to do that kind of work. :) JC

Seeing something like that rolled out of a garage is "just too cool for school". Even the German Shepard was excited!

Its like "This Old House" for quad VTRs... I love it! If only these machines could talk, the stories they would tell.

I'm just starting out doing video transfers, and production and it is neat to see these old machines up close. I thought I had most things covered with my U-matic.... Shows what I know... and need to learn!! Please keep it up, I enjoy getting a closer look.

Ever do any camera restoration? Or do you just stay with the VTR's? I worked mainly with the RF plants Transmitters & Microwaves systems. When I worked in my television & Radio days. That would of been the 50's to 2000's Steve D. 01/31/ 2017@01:38PST

I drove 2-inch for years, but it still impresses me how much thought, design and engineering went into the equipment. What’s even scarier is that all that functionality and more dan now be provided in a box the size of a deck of cards (acknowledging a vtr can do some things an iphone can’t,)

Not yet. My plan is to apply power for the first time hopefully this month. I'll do a video on that as well. The powerup of this one shouldn't be all that traumatic, as it was supposedly last fired up about three years ago before I got it. I will probably use the variac anyway though, and bring it up slowly.

@thomasking55 yes, there is a standard 4 ft. fluorescent tube above the transport in all TR-70s..and also in the earlier TR-22s. It's a great "operating" light, and helpful for doing maintenance when modules are on the extender.

So with a garage of old equipment, I take it your wife's happy you have a hobby.. Honestly though, I would hardly know where to begin with something like that, and I've worked in the electronics manufacturing industry. Now when it comes to motorcycles, I've restored several, mostly BMW and english bikes. That's been my career for the last 20 years now, and my electronics and manufacturing background has really helped in that.

I remember being in standby to play out a commercial on the 70c and a "5" on the clock and the gallery called to check I was ready I answered and put my hand back on the opposite side of the VR took the 'go' call and hit the RECORD button! very quickly by the stop and then the play button. The commercial went out with out note But I then had to spend the next hour dropping in a 1 second gap in the control track as the VT did a crash record when I hit that button. And as it was the master...!

Guy-- Another winner in the "how to" category. Between you and Park, there's an archive of shared knowledge about how to undertake a cleanup and restoration of several types of Quad machines. Hope to see more as work progresses. BTW... did you have time to take any of the seeds to an agriculture specialist to determine what they were? Ted

I've been wondering that myself! Not an easy feat for critters to get up into that blower assembly, but obviously.....something did.

Do you have a filter on your site compressor? I am wondering about oil being sprayed on the electronics.

Yes I do. I also do some painting with my air supply, so it's well filtered.
