Actually, the very first versions did not have the pneumatic dashpot that damps the lowering of the tone arm onto the record. It was one of the first of many modifications that improved the smoothest of operation.

@TheJukeboxJunkie I use a modified cassette deck motor, which I do myself. I also add the shaft and the speed control. I periodically make whole kits available- let me know if you want one. Just need to know which model you will be modifying, as there are slight differences.

Chris i just got a rp168 all brass canadian from montreal with bakeilte tone arm rest, i clean the brass but would like to get it more shine what do i use and the red cap broken what can i do can you help

I decided to leave this player as a tube player, due to it's rarity. I will instead make a battery operated version of this changer and use a much more common RCA bakelite body.

1949? Did they have 45's then ?

That actually was the year of introduction for the format and we still use it today albeit the number of people using 45 RPM records these days is not quite as large as 40 or 50 years ago.

RCA officially introduced their "45" disc to the public in March 1949.
