Nice logical fault finding sequence. Good to see you testing all the circuits out and going into the appliance for a deeper investigation of the fault.

That was absolutely brill. very educational,really good to see the sequence involved in fault finding. IM only a novice in my electrical journey but i found you to be a blend of extremely likeable, with a dash of humour and super explanations. what you did also that no other youtubers do is give a good summary at the end. I found this to be the extra mile that others dont do. sometimes I might not pick up what your saying during the actual job so a recap I was very impressed with.keep up the excellent work. These videos are such a valuable resource. Well done.

Ive had a couple of times a suspect rcd that wouldn't trip even with the test button. It turned out to be a neutral to earth fault on the 6mm feeding the hob. Unusual because as we all know, that that kind of fault WOULD trip the rcd !!!

Yes mate, I’ve been black to a few where previous electrician changed over the RCD but it didn’t resolve the issue. You need to disconnect the neutral and line of the outgoing and then do an RCD test. Defiantly had that before with the test button not working with a neutral to earth fault. Was a socket screw, screwed into the neutral.

We had a new oven that kept tripping the RCD. I found about 7 out of 9 elements had poor insulation I rang the importer direct. To my surprise they were very relaxed about it and sent me complete set. I fitted them and it gave about 15 years service

Hey mate in this situation, before taking the oven apart, would it be worthwhile testing earth leakage on each circuit protected by the rcd? Possibly other circuits could have too many milli amps of earth leakage combined from appliances to cause intermittent tripping? great vid!

Heya Samuel! Cheers for the watch, what videos would you like to see? So we tested everything and it was all clear but the oven. We knew the oven was the problem but then gave the customer a bit more bang for bucking pulling the oven apart.

How would 0.8M Ohm I.R. trip an RCD ? 230/800,000 = 0.0003mA. Watching to end, you advise that expansion during oven heating may lower the IR, plus good point about parallel paths 1/R1 + 1/Rn = 1/ Rtotal.

Basically that, there may not be an isdue currently but that less than one Meg points towards that as being the issue

Why would two RCDs in series trip together, after around 24 hours powered? But when there was only one RCD it did not trip! I didn't find a large current imbalance nor any ground currents. Any tips?
@finneyelectrical
@finneyelectrical Ай бұрын
@@tzm1843 so basics is rcds trip at the rating, so they trip when something causes more than 30mA leakage or trip if they are faulty. If they test out ok then it must be something intermittent in this case. If you do an insulation resistance test with the rcds off from line to earth and neutral to earth then if there’s an issue you generally get a reading less than 1Mohm. Disconnect the neutral and turn off the mcbs to find which circuit, then dive into that circuit to find the fault, is generally how it goes

Why not do an earth leakage test first. To see what appliance is leaking the most current. ?
@finneyelectrical

It might not be an appliance, this check is usually 5 min and identifies where to look. Could have easily been the boiler, outside lights etc

@@finneyelectricalyes but an earth leakage test would give you an idea of what appliance is leaking the most current which would be pushing the total amount over maximum 9ma aloud

I also have an intermittent fault that trips the RCD..I suspect it's the shower ( doesn't heat the water, just mixes). I will wait to get a basic insulation tester, I only have ordinary DMM.. Would that also give me an indication? Thinking ahead, would a consumer unit with RCBOs be better? Btw what area do you cover in the UK? I am in Reading area.
@finneyelectrical
@finneyelectrical 6 ай бұрын
Yeah that a good 3 hours for us, could charge you a good £500 to cover but best to get a local firm in for like £150-200. Basically do what I did in the video, if it’s the shower, get the same make and mode and replace it. Check the out of the isolator with it off to check it’s the shower not the cabling

@Jim804 7 ай бұрын
How do you take the neutral out. Do you mean the main neutral lead to the isolator or each circuit individually
@finneyelectrical
@finneyelectrical 7 ай бұрын
RCD off disconnects the neutral, main switch disconnects the neutral and taking each circuits neutral removes that link between neutral to earth, meaning disconnects the TN of a tncs or tns or a link between neaitral to earth in a TT
@Jim804
@Jim804 7 ай бұрын
It’s at the 3 minute mark I don’t get as I don’t think I see you actually take the neutral out for each one. So I’m not sure what was going on mate.
@finneyelectrical
@finneyelectrical 7 ай бұрын
@Jim804 yeah took the neutral for testing that circuit so when you test you should get >200Mohm or at least over 1Mohm. Anything under that shows there’s an issue in that circuit. Then do line to cpc and check that. Obviously just turning off the mcb disconnects any links to other circuits.
