Why in a TT unit, the Main Switch "must?" be an RCD? Why cannot an 2pole Isolator switch OR an MCB ? I know in UK the Main Switch is "always" a 2pole Switch.

Hi Philip, If for instance the TT earth electrode becomes unreliable for some reason. Its done like that to put the earth fault protection as close to the origin of the installation as possible. The cables entering the board must also be double insulated and shielded from coming into contact with the board, then terminate directly into a Double Pole Isolating RCD so as to minimise the chance of the metal enclosure coming into contact with a live conductor before the RCD, as this would energise all the connected exposed conductive parts and the RCD would not see it. Doing it like this also reduces the chances for someone who has taken the front off the board from coming into contact with the busbar and recieving a shock that again the RCD would not see unless it was at the beginning the supply. Installing an RCD upstream would avoid this situation of course but sometimes this is not practical and also other factors would then need to be considered such as 'selectivity' but that's another story. Anyway I hope this helps!
