Nice build man this brings back memories of my old Cox Scorpion! I'm in the process of restoring my old original Turbo Optima that I got back in 1987 and raced up till 92. I'm glad to see kyosho, Tamyia and others bring back their old kits from way back. Back then, it was all about the build. Little issues like you having to drill the rear nurf bar for example is what made building these kits so worth while and added personality to it and the way you had to adapt to the car while racing it since they had limited tuning capability compared to modern kits today, they also looked way better than today's buggies which are built more for functionality than good looks keep up the good work!
@RCHobbyShed4 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. I agree, there's nothing a good as building them yourself. It is great that some of the manufacturers are bring back some of the oldies, at least people like me can still some of the buggies they dreamed about as a kid but were way out of reach, actually some still are out of reach lol. The Turbo Optima is a great buggy, good luck with the resto. I also remember the Scorpion being sold by Cox too, I'm actually piecing together a replica Cox Sidewinder. Basically I'll use a new Kyosho Beetle and a TBG body, the wheels may have to be (hard to find) originals though. Thanks for watching! 🙂👍

Great Mick, just one thing for me that I would detail is that the figure looks to toyish all shiny but superb paint job I would, before removing over spray film is to take a sharp blade and cut the over spray mask around the driver or even the entire cock pit and remove it then spray matt clear over area to knock off the shimmer a bit, and it well keep the over spray away from the body finish! Thank"s Mick Ralphie

They can bit that way. You could try to loosen the swingarm mounts on the chassis while it's all assembled. It might take 6 hands to do it but that's the best way I've found. Just back off the grub screws a tad and move the swingarm up and down to help it find it's best position. Hope that makes sense. 👍

I just ordered one of these kits last night. Got the bug for vintage RC recently. Great video, Sir! I've watched several and yours is extremely good in comparison. One thing I noticed on all the build videos is that no one seems to use thread locker on all the metal to metal parts or with the non-locking nuts? I'm just finishing up a Sand Scorcher and they had you use thread locker on almost all metal to metal attachments.
@RCHobbyShed3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your Scorpion purchase! Thanks for the great feedback on my video too. I have noticed some of the Tamiya buggies, such as the Sand Scorcher seem to use a lot more thread lock. For the Scorpion I only used it where indicated, at least I meant too, maybe I missed some 😂. It's most important to use it on the front suspension as it can get loose as sloppy very quick. 👍

It is a great kit. I am however looking at possibly switching the front tires to something softer. Hopefully that'll help the handling

I also noticed the fronts are quite hard. I think too hard for traction any hard surface. I haven't driven mine yet but plan to run it on sand or grass. Let me know how you go with different tyres.

I'm taking it to the hobby shop tomorrow and I'll let you know. They've some Losi stuff and Proline. Also once the Ultima kit comes out my guess is the tires and wheels for that will fit and will be much softer and hopefully they'll have after market replacements

Stupid question, but those frame rails weren’t prone to bend during a hard fall from a jump or during a tumble?
@RCHobbyShed3 жыл бұрын
No, not a stupid question at all. Because of lockdown, I still haven't run any of my Kyosho buggies with these rails (Tomahawk, Beetle, Scorpion, Turbo Scorpion), but will be running them all very soon. I can say I had an original Beetle back in the day and I never had any issues with the rails bending. They are quite strong, I really think you'd have to run it straight into a brick wall to bend the rails. 👍

Hey Mick just reading-visiting your video as I’m about to start my build. Just a question- do you think the PS 19 Camel yellow backing is necessary? If I only used PS6 would there be an obvious variation in colour to the plastic tub? Cheers
@RCHobbyShed2 жыл бұрын
G'day Chris! Yeah there is quite a difference if you only use the PS6, the body will be brighter and more of a lemon yellow colour when compared to the tub colour. It won't be like black and white but will be noticeable. It really just depends how concerned you are with it matching, if you just want it yellow and aren't too fussed if it's exactly the same then just go with the PS6. 👍

What kind of paint did you use to brush on the driver on the lexan body and helmet? Createx?
@RCHobbyShed3 жыл бұрын
From memory I think I used Tamiya acrylics on the helmet and yes, it was either Createx for the driver body... It may have even been Tamiya enamel or acrylic. I sometimes use those in small areas too, even though it's on polycarbonate I've not had an issue since it's only a small area. If I remember rightly the paint I used in the airbrush for the black underneath, it was just Tamiya PS paint that I decanted for the airbrush. The yellow is just Tamiya PS paint. 👍
@raymondbunce75814 жыл бұрын
You did a great job on that, the video was super helpful. What specific paint did you use on the driver's helmet for the silver?
@RCHobbyShed4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad it was helpful. The paint on the helmet is actually a pale blue I mixed up myself from some Tamiya blue and white acrylics. I tend to do that quite often if I don't have a certain colour at the time. In this case I just put a small amount of blue and white on a piece of card and mix them until I get the colour I'm looking for. 👍
@raymondbunce75814 жыл бұрын
@@RCHobbyShed I was afraid that silver paint would be too light and shiny while gray would be too dark. Maybe I'll try what you did. Thank you for the information on mixing.

Love it. Thank you for the in-depth video. Did you paint the driver area with just a fine brush and brushed on lexan paint?

RC Hobby Shed perfect! I have done a ton of rattle can bodies over 30 years. Never did learn to air brush. I just got a turbo scorpion kit and want to derail paint the driver and replicate the blue and red decals with paint. Your build video is excellent

@@KMJ187 An airbrush can be really helpful, I've been learning to use mine for around 5 years now lol. Good for painting around the cockpit area in these type of bodies. On my Javelin and Optima restos i used a mix of methods. In those buggies I painted the seat belts and stuff with a brush. On the Optima I cut little Kyosho name decals for the belts, but the rest is paint. Those Turbo Scorpions look awesome, I also have one to build. I checked out your channel, awesome and subbed.
