Shifter Stuck in Park Wont Move Easy Fix | Most Make & Model Vehicles

I will show you what to do if your car is stuck in the park position. The shift lock override slot is the main component that controls the locking and unlocking of the shifter. Vehicles may get stuck in park if the vehicle ignition switch, the brake light/stop light switch or the shift interlock solenoid fail. When one of these components fail you may not be able to move the shifter out of park. Additionally, if your vehicle's battery is dead, the shifter will be stuck in Park. Follow these steps to release a stuck shifter. This is for automatic vehicles only! All Make & Model Vehicles.
1) Set the emergency brake.
2) Locate the shift lock override slot located on the shifter console near the shifter lever. Normally, the slot is plugged with a small plastic cap. Remove the cap.
3) Insert a small screwdriver, nail file, key or similarly shaped object into the override slot, push down and hold.
4) While continuing to hold down the shift override mechanism, depress the brake pedal.
5) Now, grasp the shifter, push in the release button located on the shifter as you normally do and then move the shifter to the desired gear. If you've completed these steps with the engine off, move the shifter to the Neutral position to start the engine.

Great video! It is frightening not to get your car out of park. It happened to my 2007 Corvette. Unfortunately, GM did not think of the safety release hole. However, I learned you can put ignition in Acc. Mode without foot on brake and then move shifter to N.

My 2018 Nissan NV200 SV cargo van has been doing this (Column shifter stuck in park) and today it was almost 10 min to get it to release as before maybe 30 seconds pushing on brake on and off. Thanks so much for your video as I now see the release tab to right of shifter so I can at least get van to dealer tommorow if stuck again as Van's still under warranty. Very annoying!! Glad I am not on a road trip. Only 28,000 miles on van seems like could be sylinoid Update.... Took van to dealer and got it to stick for mechanic ha ha. He said button stuck so that is a sylinoid and so ordered new parts all under warranty and replaced bad one . Yea

I had this problem the other day in my Toyota Corolla 2009 model. I called roadside assist, luckily I was just in my garage. The guy took off the Gear shift cover basically yanked the gear shift out of park. I took it to Toyota, where I regularly get my car serviced and they never mentioned your solution or diagnosis. They just said the cogs where the gear shift moves around needed lubricating. I also didn't know you could take that button off. Thanks.

I guess the problem arises because the park position locks the wheels to the transmission casing, and any small movement that is made from the wheels when putting the car in P simply locks the mechanism. Even a small slope exerts a force into the casing; in manual cars we use 1st. or 2nd. gear for that purpose, sometimes the car (engine not running) moves a fraction of an inch when putting it in 1 or 2 but with the use of the clutch pedal the transmission easily unlocks. We that use manual cars use the hand brake a lot, though as said, leaving the car in 1st or 2nd gear is common practice too. Now I, being totally ignorant of automatic transmissions, have this question: do I have to put the car in P to take the keys out or to start the engine?

My car won’t turn on but lights do. I got it towed last time and the tow guy popped something up around the shifter because it wasn’t shifting to neutral to get on the tow truck. When it got to the mechanic he had for days and it started right up. No check engine battery, alternator was good. Wondering if the tow guy actually fixed the issue when forcing into gear with the prying up of the shifter surround. Could this be why the car won’t start? Or shift? Because it’s another day I had to give my hubby my car and I can’t get my son to school once again. It’s a ford fiesta. Any help from you (or anyones suggestions) would be great. Thanks
