Hi Gav - so nice to see you enjoying the build, as you know, I love mine! I'm sure you will enjoy running it too, as you said, it's a bit different for Tamiya, I think the quality really shines through, as it will when you drive it! All the best, mate! 👍😊
@spencergold12793 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed your series on this one too Mark 👍 interested in your thoughts on the shocks and whether to run a higher ride height by using the longer eyelets which come with the shock sprues - and also interested in whether you ever fitted a torque tuned motor to it, as your comparison against the TT-02 didn’t seem quite even otherwise (I think that had a torque tuned in?!)
@MarkBryanRC3 жыл бұрын
@@spencergold1279 Hi Spencer - thank you, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the series! You are correct, I did employ the longer eyelets, as the ground clearance isn't great for rallying in stock form. Much better with those fitted. As for the motor (between you and me!) I wanted to try to show that the better design and handling could beat a hopped up budget car - but it was a close thing. You can tell the difference more when you drive them back-to-back. I'm hoping to do the XV justice by fitting a mild brushless setup, just need to find the cash, and parts are hard to get at the moment. Hopefully coming this year. All the best, Spencer. 👍😊

Nice Build vid! I have this model and it is by far one of my favourites. I did however dislike the bottoming out of the suspension which leaves scratches ALL OVER the bottom of the chassis. Luckily the solution is supplied for you by Tamiya! A good fix I found was (in step 25 @ 19:25 into your Vid) to swap out the shock base connector, simply use part V2 instead of V1 as it gives just that little bit more clearance when the shock is fully compressed. Far better than spending money on hop up parts, and keeps your model 100% Tamiya!

@gribly3 жыл бұрын
At 4:15 it’s best put a shim between the plastic nn spacer and the gear. You’ll need to source it yourself, 4mm shaft size, 6mm outer diameter or so. Also, Associated Green Slime shock lube is good to put on the diff gaskets to help with sealing, and thicker diff oil leaks less. I haven’t built my own xv01 yet, but I’ve been researching like crazy getting ready to. It will be my seventh Tamiya build! I actually bought a TT02 Escort Cosworth just for the body and wheels to put on the xv01, and gave the rest of the kit to a friend for his first build along with spare electronics.

The front is very similar to the FF-03 with how the motor mount and diff is done. And as a whole it also reminds me a lot of my TA-05 ver.II (which clearly shares the design philosophy with the FF-03 and what I recognize in this XV-01 as well). Like how the suspention arms are mounted and the thin spacers used in between the mounts. They are beautiful chassis with very little slop. This makes me want to get an XV-01 as well. Would love to see more touring cars pass the channel. I'm not really a buggy person myself but still enjoy your channel and video's very much. I really wanted a Kyosho Phantom after you being so enthousiastic about it. But I could keep myself from getting one haha.

I’ve always liked rally/touring cars, Tamiya always did awesome model kits back in the late 70’s early 80’s and I can’t remember if one one of the early RC kits was a Lancia or Audi, although the 959 Porsche was something, whatever, this kit is just interesting indeed, as I’m reading some comments builders of modern kits seem to have seen some of this architecture before, but I’ve never seen a chassis like this I’ll suspect that it will run well. My first real kit that blew me away was the Kyosho Optima mid way back in 1989 was, in my opinion, a modern chassis as compared to anything I’d built up until that time.

The oil from the diff will come out as you install a brushless, then I just used grease in it, I did mount all the tamiya optionals and you spend the same value as the car imself, lately I bought the aluminium arms and the aluminium belt wheel, epic

If you decide to use the slipper clutch set, don't forget you will also need to change the pinion to a 48 pitch type. A 25 tooth pinion from Tamiya 54218 gives almost the same ratio as the original kit spur pinion combination.
@spencergold12793 жыл бұрын
I loved building mine - and as you say, it felt totally different to the other tamiyas I’ve built so far. LOTS of little shims though! I think the standard strut eyelets leave the car too low and it bottoms out (and Tamiya shocks seem far too soft....) so I’ve installed the longer eyelets which come on the shock sprues. Not actually had a chance to run it in this configuration yet though - and a few reports state it makes it more likely to topple over, which would be pretty serious in light of the hours spent on the body! There are a LOT of decals, and the ones over the front wings are tricky. I had a few wrinkles and bubbles which I couldn’t quite get rid of with a hairdryer - but not as tough as the Kyosho Turbo Scorpion! Looking forward to watching your efforts on the body though - as your cars always look stunning when finished. 👍

Hello Gavin, Great choice of kit, i agree the kit build seems slightly different from other Tamiya I've built, I personally love the XV-01 platform, the handling is really something special, and perfect for that scale rally look. BUILD TIP: Tamiya instructions assembly images 2&8 shown the front and rear gearboxes coming together, when using the middle shaft (BA19) AFTER using shaft pin(BA15) and Idler gear (BG1) BEFORE sliding on NN4 to mate up to the Idler gear (shaft pin BA15 side) use a thin metal shim with a 4mm hole 6mm outer diameter (3Racing (3RAC-SW04/V2) was what was recommended by several XV Guru's anyway what that shim does it stop the metal shaft pin BA15 from eating into plastic spacer NN4 causing slop and prematurely wearing the plastic Idler gear. It isn't a major issue unless you run your XV often or hard, but if we can extent the life, increase reliability and reduce costs, win win and win. P.S the correct answer from last week was Yokomo XY-870C Super Dogfighter shocks, we must of bought from same guy as my Dogfighter came with Kyosho Shocks lol. Cheers and best wishes Fu.

I've built three of the six kits and a lot of the build your doing reminds me of what you said . I also believe that to be true because of the cost . I have a TT-02 and I could have bought two of them at the cost of the XV-01

Hi! In addition to the FF03 several others have already recommended, the vintage TA03F is also a good choice for an upcoming build. You can find kits new in box on eBay. Gavin, nice video again about a great Rally car, my breath only stopped as you were clamping the piston rods with your std. pliers to screw on the eyelets. Ouch! Tamiya suggests to use a towel between or special piston rod plier. Just in case you got leaking shocks by scratched piston rods.
@RCKickschannel3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never scratched one so far in all the hundreds I’ve built but it’s not best practice no. You don’t need to apply that much pressure to hold the piston but it’s easier for tamiya to say use something to protect the piston as it’s impossible to anticipate what pliers a person will use or how much force will be applied. Do what works best for you. 👍🏻

@pacobarco3 жыл бұрын
I would not say that fitting the electronics is easy. The space is given, you need electronics that fit and cables need to be well organised. The radio antenna has an strange path (inside) until reaching the pipe. The battey needs long cables to reach the esc and it has to be always connected...and disconnecting the battery quickly is always a safe measure in case of electric cut. This cannot be done here. Another strange thing is that the belt transmission is "completelly" sealed but ... not completelly: the front pulley is open to air (ridiculous) and then all dust can get into the "completelly" sealed compartment. The best thing in the car is the oversteering in corners. As always great video and please, bring more touring cars to the channel.

Hi, LOL sorry about that, KZbin puts them in automatically. Unfortunately, If I remove mid-roll adverts you won't have an RCKicks channel to watch. When the channel gets bigger and I can afford to remove the adverts I will dial them back one at a time. While the channel makes a loss each month, it's not possible to remove a large chunk of the income. Currently, the channel is funded by RCKicks Patreons, Rebecca and I and the KZbin advert income. You can subscribe to KZbin to remove all adverts on a monthly subscription. That way you don't have to deal with the adverts but content creators can afford to make content for you to watch.
