I bought the brushed Rustler 4x4 and almost immediately had buyers remorse so I've been upgrading it to a brushless. I'm new to the hobby so it was a good way to learn my way around the truck but damn it was expensive. I should have just bought the brushless to begin with. I had everything done except for the differentials and the slipper clutch; which I replaced today while watching this video. It was really helpful. Thank you.

@Jermaine H Thanks for the kind words. My buyer's remorse was partly about speed I guess, but mostly it was because I was burning up brushed motors. I live in an area that is all sand and most of the places I'm able to run my RC is sandy. As it turns out, sand is really hard on brushed motors.

This is great information. I bought a pair of Rustler 4x4s for my 2 young boys recently and they love them. I told them that if they learn to control them, I will step them up a notch. I know there are a lot of high quality 1/10 scale bashers I could have bought from other brands, but the main reason I went with Traxxas was for the training mode. My kids love driving them and they are at 50% power! Granted, my kids are 4 and 5 yrs old (oldest will be 6 in June). They had lots of practice with my E-Revo 2.0 on training mode. Using the TQi remote and the Traxxas link app, i was able to keep them under 20 mph on 6s. I feel like i will be able to step them up to 100% power soon and that should keep them happy for a while. Then, when they are ready, I can step them up to brushless. With the "Power up" program through Traxxas, I can upgrade the motor and ESC for ~$125. Also, maybe they will get bored with them and not care to upgrade. Then I have a couple of Rustlers to play with my friends that don't have cars to introduce them to the hobby (or when my E-Revo is in need of repair).

Yep, my brushed 4x4 version is REALLY SLOW. If you get an XL-5 in one of the lighter 2wd models, you might be OK, but I'm running 7-cell niMh in this model, and am a little disappointed. I haven't switched to LiPo yet, but if I did run 2S, it wouldn't give me any more speed, as I'd only have 7.4 volts. The tires make a lot of noise on blacktop, also, so they are probably robbing a little speed. Recently, I've seen the Rustler VXL 4x4 for sale without a battery and charger for 379.95. Fortunately, I have a spare older Velineon.

upgrade parts are about 256.49. so in total your spending about 556.48 for this car. great video thank you for taking the time to show this. me and my wife picked up the brushless versions and i picked up the brushed for the kids thinking it would be cheap to upgrade later. doesnt look like ill be doing this.

You forgot to add the Wheelie bar that the VXL version comes with. That's about another 30 dollars you can add to your laundry list of parts.
@markoftheus

@@19Herofade92 Don't forget to add in the servo too. The XL-5 uses the 2056 analog servo while the VXL uses the stronger digital 2075 servo.

You did a great video but if I may suggest, there is something wrong in mounting the clutch: you have to move the pin in the shaft towards the hole closest to the center because the metal plate screwed on the spur has a recessed hole and the origina One has a protruding one. And the wheelie bar is needed. Other than that it's the most comprehensive video ever. Good job

One other small difference between the brushed and brushless models are in the bellcranks. The VXL bellcranks come with bearings instead of the XL5's bushings. Good video though!

Hi. I already have a VXL3s combo at hand so I would like to get a Rustler 4x4 Brushed to ease on the costs. For the same reason, which parts of the conversion to brushless specs would you do first (or that you think are mandatory) and which one could wait. Thanks.

It honestly depends on what you want to do with it. Like do you want adjustability, durability, or just to make it work? If you just want to make it work for with esc/motor, and fix stuff when it breaks

The Brushless system will drop in with no other upgrades. I would say the stock parts will be fine on a 2 cell but may not hold out to long on 3 cell
@Sloppyjoe96
@Sloppyjoe96 5 жыл бұрын
Christian Boucher the clutch would probably be fine, the old vxl models use them old style organic pads from factory same with the old style slash 4x4 metal diffs do fine aswell. the slash is damn near bulletproof lol these are more of just performance upgrades like for gear ratio, rather than for durability.
