Many thanks to the overwhelming amount of feedback here - so I was right - Antennas are still a hot topic, we have to learn a lot about them - because here is the key to a solid video transmission. Not on the TX side by bumping up MW output - but rather on the RX side by using good receivers and antennas! List of ANTENNAS for ROUND 2: (please reply with more suggestions if you miss something for round 2): TrueRC x-air 10db 120deg VAS MadMushroom, ION, or Crosshair MenaceRC Invader, Pico or Raptor TBS 5db patch Lumenier Pagoda v2 Foxeer Lollipop 2 (supposedly not a clone anymore) Emax Pagoda Eachine SingPad (claimed 16db patch) STRIX hoot Testupdates: I will see what the maximum distance for the sensitivity of my Spektran is. I guess if I seperate RX and TX 10m the low numbers are really close to the noisefloor... Maybe I can do the test in the evening, on an wide open field without reflectors. TFP antennas: testing them with small semi rigid coax Common questions: real life effect of DB values: every -6db the signal level is halved

Hi, good work and informative. You are on my list of FPV Gurus :) I am curious to see how whip antennas perform with the Menace bandicoots because strangely enough they seem to outperform many cp combinations? but maybe they are bad with many pilots flying but cant find any information on this? Thanks.

Those results are pretty much identical to the results I have produced with my various antenna reviews. Most of the time I fly with an Aomway SP omni and a 5-turn helical via the diversity receivers in my goggles. Gives great range and minimal dropouts. The only thing you didn't measure was axial-ratio (rejection of reflections). If you saw my last antenna test video you'll see how *I* tested this :-)
@Rcschim
@Rcschim 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Bruce - was hoping to see you here in the comments ;-) I'll check out the axial-ratio test method - but I felt like this video was long enough already (and I re-cut it several times to get it shorter). I was especially surprised how bad the cheap helix did... what are your thoughts on 1mw and 5meters distance? practical for me (I didnt have to walk too far) - but would it be better to have more MW and more distance?
@xjet
@xjet 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, at close distances, you can get some bleeding from the circuitry within the VTX so some of the signal you pick up isn't actually coming from the antenna connected to the VTX and may therefore not be correctly polarized. In my tests, the pagoda antennas had the best axial ratio (ie: were most circularly polarized) so I'd tend to use one of those on the VTX when doing the test for axial ratio on the receiver antennas. I congratulate you on your work... a video like this takes a lot of time and effort. Well done Mario.

thanks Bruce - I know that you can really appreciate such videos since you do know how much work it is. but it's fueld by curiosity - and since I had the tools - it was actually fun! on the "bleeding" - right - I used the IRC rf powermeter v2 and a sniffer antenna and saw that right above the rf chip and the SMA adaptor you see more mw than microW.

xjet I also have noticed the axial ratio of the Pagoda antennas is near perfect. Run them on every one of my race & freestyle quads, with a pagoda & X2 Pepperbox on the goggles. I run them mainly because I run LHCP and all my friends run RHCP, so it really helps so we’re not stepping on eachother as badly.

There is an S800 on my bench, it's the first FPV setup for me. All I knew about the antenna is all reviewers chucked the liner dipole for something else. Shopping for options in the dark, sort of came out well, ending up with the small patch that you deemed ok. What drew my attention was on the chart, showing how well the liner antenna seemed to perform. There is a lot I need to learn. That is why videos like this are appreciated very much.

I actually consider using them triumphs more now. I always was a bit dissapointed when comparing them "on the fly" literally - but maybe I didnt do the "overhead flying" test - where they would show advantages. also in my reflection tests the Pagodas were better in ignoring reflections - the triumphs worked not so well here. so a pagoda with good axial ratio and sphere instead of doughnut - that's what I would want. thought the lollipop or axii does this - but I'm not sure...

Awesome video! This is exactly what I was looking for. One notable exception I thought missing: TrueRC X-AIR 5.8 I'm particularly interested in this patch because it supposedly works even if you fly behind it (meaning you can use on a non-diversity rx if you don't go that far to your rear but with all the advantages of a patch). I look forward to round 2 and seeing even more options! Keep up your great work :)

3.6km today and only turned around due to battery, video was still perfect. 600mW Tramp VTx w/ Triumph. For VRx 2x of the new VAS Crosshair Extreme RHCP antennas on a true-d v3.8 fw. On the second VRx which was also a true-d v3.8 fw I had mounted an IRC 8dbi RHCP patch & a TrueRC X-Air and this second one also had perfect video at 3.6km, no problem as well. So all these antennas were pretty much equal at this range, but if I had to pick for best video quality and least break-up for the duration of the flight it was best to worst: 1. VAS Crosshair Extreme 2. IRC Spironet 8dbi 3. TrueRC X-air

Excellent review, very helpful. I saw another comparison between two triple feed patches from two different manufacturers and one performed better than the other. Investigating the issue further the reviewer discovered they performed better with a longer cable separating them more from the receptor, like the little coax cable on the cheap helical you used. Maybe that is why it didn't perform its best.

You sir, just took most of the mystery out of the way most of these CP antennas operate.No lab enviro, just a simple 'what you see is what you get' which allows anyone to decide what antennas they would rather use. It would have been nice to see a few of those white ping pong ball type with the TX and RX printed on top (real cheapos) as I have had decent results with those and would be interesting to see how they really stack up in a shootout like this one. I found an interesting GS system which uses a triversity which I use a cp 3 turn helix in center, and a pair of aomway patches on each end covering 180 swath..then drop it to a 25 mw and cp clover for rebroadcast. Whole thing sits on a tripod . This allows me to use a clover and head tracking on the goggles..but the GS is "tracking by rssi" via patches... works on any plane and all without using gps tracking.

yep, the little ones with only linear antennas are not optimal. sometimes they are available to more than 25mw because of this shortcoming. with more mw you can get away with those antennas. the other thing: try little spws or axii / lollipops with ufl connector (check to see if this fits on your copter).

Thanks for a very interesting video! So the linear antennas are OK when the polarization is correct? Does this mean that I can use a simple linear antenna on my quad, and four simple linear antennas at different angles on my goggles?
@Rcschim
@Rcschim 5 жыл бұрын
In theory, yes. But while the reception might be good in most cases you forget multipathing: if your copter emits video signal which is then reflected by an object, your goggles will receive 2 signals at slightly different times. this gives interference as well. if you had circ antennas, the reflected signal would be way less powerfull and not so much intereference ;)
@droidgull

OK, on a field linear antennas might work good, but in a city environment with a lot of reflection I need CP antennas. I'am new to FPV and just baught goggles, Eachine 200D, they was delivered without antennas. I guess I have to buy some antennas and try.

Thanks for putting this together! Questions - why no VAS MadMushroom, ION, or Crosshair? No MenaceRC Invader, Pico or Raptor? Lumenier Pagoda v2? These are by far the most common antennas I see attached to goggle RX modules every weekend, and if I'm interpreting your results correctly it seems like other than the 12dB Helix the Immersion RC patches destroyed everything else, which is sad. So we learned that using an IRC patch that came with my FS goggles on the receiver side works great at a short distance and ranks #3 in the ultimate test. I understand buying lots of antennas sucks, which is why you probably don't have the ones I mentioned above. Moar.
@Rcschim
@Rcschim 6 жыл бұрын
thanks for your list - I'll try to get some of these for the next test. VAS is a bit harder and expensive to get outside the US I think. plus I didnt have the best experience with their pepperbox - which was why I didnt buy more of their rather expensive antennas... I think AndyRC tested the MenaceRC Invader and pico - I'll take a look at them for sure! yep - looks like the little patch from IRC is a really good std. goggles antenna...
@zekegibson3976
@zekegibson3976 6 жыл бұрын
Ahh yes I have never tried a Pepperbox, though as you illustrated it really is intended for ground stations and you didn't have the best experience with it, so I can understand some hesitation and / or concern. I agree the cost for the VAS antennas is a bit higher than others, and since I live in the US although some of them are sold out from my favorite suppliers periodically they are not too difficult to find here though that may not be the case outside of the US as you have said. On my first set of goggles I started with the IRC Spironet RHCP omni and the little patch that was included and I thought it was an "OK" combo but really had no prior experience, or other setups to compare to so wasn't sure what to expect from other antenna options. I moved to a VAS MadMushroom omni and kept the small IRC patch, saw a marked improvement personally, in my setups where I fly. I then replaced the little IRC patch with a VAS Crosshair, that became my favorite setup on that set of goggles, the penetration through trees and tall grass was better with the Crosshair in particular. I use a Furious True-D 3.7 RX module in both sets of goggles, calibrated per the instructions. On the second set I eventually settled on an ION omni which is nice and compact, and seems to be tuned quite well. I also have a MenaceRC Invader on that set, which I have been happy with, again it's nice and compact. But this is why I am looking forward to seeing how the Pico performs! For the Raptor and Lumenier Pagoda v2, personally I have yet to try them on the RX modules. I'm curious though how much of a performance difference, if any really exists between the different Pagodas. These are just my personal experiences, again with my specific setups where I fly. So I am curious to see how these would rank using your testing setup and methodology :)
@Rcschim
@Rcschim 6 жыл бұрын
wow, that's a lot of feedback - thanks for sharing. Antennas are still a hot topic. the crosshair sounds good - I will try to get one now :) Testing can be really complex if you consider all the facts: I could have looked at something like Bardwells SWR meter considerations and look at each antenna at it's best tuned frequency. but man - that's way above my time budget limit at the moment for doing such tests :) Also I feel like the antennas should be tested as most users would use them - and I think many users just use Fatshark 1 as it's preset (or whatever VTX they have)... As with my latency testing - I will try to keep consistent updates to my antenna test XLS sheet.
@zekegibson3976
@zekegibson3976 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, if you tried to test each antenna at the frequency it appeared to perform the best at, it would be alot of extra time and more importantly I think you are spot-on with evaluating them just as most people would after a purchase, take it out and attach it to the goggles and go fly. Personally if I knew an antenna did great on 1 or 2 frequencies but wasn't good on the others I wouldn't buy it, that flexibility is needed so you can work around other pilots and the environment to a limited extent. I still see people flying in the FS band, they are accustomed to easily changing channels within that band because they have been doing it for a long time and it's working for them so all good. I was the first one in the group to utilize RaceBand and went all the way up to 8 (5917), and it's entirely possible my setup might be more ideal on a different channel, but it works so I haven't experimented much with alternate frequencies within the RaceBand. And what power am I really getting from my vTX and antenna combo at that high frequency? This is why I need that sweet IRC v2 meter you have! Also I wanted to thank you for doing your tests outdoors, not in a workshop / office / garage where all kinds of other factors could come into play, but you'd have a hard time proving it, etc. I think it just makes sense to test outdoors where people would fly. Thanks again!

Awesome comparison video! Question: Since your dB readings are on a logarithmic scale, what is the real life effect on range or reception quality within a few dB difference? Trying to wrap my head around the test results and put it into perspective. Thanks for your hard work!

Liberty Aloft every -6db the signal level is halved, using that formula, 3dB is is roughly 25%

interesting test, though i think the eachine patch is on backwards, found this out after i lost a drone and i was using it to find it and the signal kept getting weaker as i moved "towards" it.

Interessante Idee. Aber ich denke damit hätte man die meiste Zeit einfach schlechten Empfang. Weil die Antenne die meiste Zeit nicht in die richtige Richtung schaut. Damit hat man einen Stroboskop-Effekt...

Such a great and informative video. Clears lots of misconceptions. It would be impossible to show how frequency can impact the performance but that would be the only element missing. 8db IRC is awesome all around due to its form factor. But 13db is great for long range when mixed with spironet. It really is. It helps to combat super narrow near reception. Which matters unless target is just in front. Then there are Eu based manufactures of super nice antennas like Actuna, their gem is compact and Rhcp. Cheap too, they make pagodas, excellent linear antennas with u.fl and of course quality patches. Lastly: where in earth you got that small terminator? I need to know :) Love your work cheers from Holland

Great testing....I was surprised how many of the skews gave a similar performance. On 5.8G, I always use the hated RD on my vtx and a pair of 14dbi Linear Patch antennas on my (true) Diversity Monitor, which works rather well for me. For serious FPV, its 1.2G for me, which is far less picky and works at much lower altitudes. I think the small black Eachine patch may have been a vertically polarised antenna explaining its poor performance...? Its significant, when they dont indicate polarisation on their antennas, its reason enough to not even consider them for purchase IMO. My suggestion?...an RD on the VTX.....and a 14dbi Linear patch at the receive end.....This combination was not in your test...?

Any chance you could test the size of the null area on antennas in degrees as well? When long ranging I have gone from perfect video to absolutely nothing on RTH with a aomway sp clone and i suspect i went into the null area of the antenna and i am looking for an tx antenna with really good signal dispersion. Also the null at both ends might be different so worth testing both. For TX the bottom null is very important as its entered more often whereas for RX the top null is more important. Thanks for the video interesting to see that some patch antennas are no better than an omni for pure gain.
@Rcschim
@Rcschim 6 жыл бұрын
some interesting points here. I'm afraid this get's to deep into "real measurement applications" which you would need lab equipment rather than a practical "on the field" test... also the video might get a little long. I see how I can improve it in that regards - while at the same time keep it short. I agree that TX bottom null is important. but I guess most antennas are quite symmetrical (top / bottom null should be the same - but I could be wrong).

A shame you didn't have a good VAS antenna. I pretty much use all VAS antennas: RHCP, & helical. I also have a few patch antennas. I do have a set of "Birds Eye View" antennas, with the small RHCP on the camera quad and the matching patch on the diversity monitor. Also have some Menace RC patches, which are good. It's good to have a diversity setup so that you can optimize reception. Cheers.

Awesome stuff, thanks for this!! If you even repeat the test, please instead move the entire receiver horizontal, instead of bending the antenna to 90 degrees. I think that sharp of a bend will also reduce the antenna's abilities. Still, thank you thank you, very nice video!

I've settled on Aomway Commanders (after BeeRotor and Headplay boxes), still like both, but Commanders have a way of disappearing that the boxes just don't. In the RF department, the Commanders are a little better than the Headplays and are much better than the Beerotors - noise is much worse in the Beerotors than the others, but they are quite old by our standards, 3 years now... The Headplays still amaze me every time I break them out though. That big screen just draws you in - if only they were the size of the Commanders we'd have a winner! This is a very subjective thing.... On the left receiver (for the field where I fly most) I have a VAS 10db Crosshair on a 45 to aim it and on the right input I go back and forth between a VAS Mad Mushroom and Aomway blue. (still have not decided) I've tried most of your list except the pagoda styles, and my feelings closely match your more scientific tests. When I fly my small stuff with linear Tx antennas, I change the Crosshair to a Bandicoot Menace Patch (I leave the RHCP on the other side) and it works quite well. If I remove the Omni, the Crosshair will walk you to a downed quad by turning your head until you get snow in both directions, then walk down the middle. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. It's appreciated. Just bought a IRC RF Meter after your review as well.

thanks for the feedback Scott. Often read it - but never (had to) try finding a quad with a directional antenna. sounds good tho. You only need some luck that on the crash your battery doesnt disconnect :) Crosshair is top of my list of antennas to get for test #2 :) rf powermeter should work as a quadfinder with a directional antenna as well...
