I really love hearing someone else saying that he prints everything he has to read. I know people do, but I just havent met them. I too cant stand reading in the PC, mostly because I like to "play" with them and I just dont enjoy being too much in the computer.

I used to print everything, too. However, I then bought an iPad and it honestly changed my student life. The quality of my note-taking went through the roof, I can easily create incredible visual study boards and mental maps, incorporate things-including, say, snippets of videos like these in my notes, etc. All of it, of course, only works and is nice if you have the pen. But yes, I can keep everything I own together, but I totally understand why you'd want to print stuff out, I still do that sometimes, and the physical properties of paper are definitely incomparable to anything else. :)

I wrote two books relying on printed material with hand written annotations and sticky notes (alas; not the aesthetically pleasing Coco Fusen variety). I am convinced the tactility of the paper afforded better opportunities to flick through pages and Cherry pick ideas and sections to quote.😀

Yeah, printing out university “readings” got very expensive very quickly - just in ink cartridges! A tablet is the way to go paperless, easier for reading and notating, and it works out for the best because it then becomes searchable. Love your whole analogue/tech hybrid vibe.

something i like for marking my beautiful copies of books is transparent sticky notes. it can go right over the text and along with my page flags they help me keep my books organized. sadly they need to be written on in pencil or ballpoint because of the material, but i find it to be super helpful

In terms of your Moleskine paper, check the QC inspection sticker in the back cover pocket. I have heard, and confirmed myself, that if it is a light blue color (robin’s egg blue) it correlates with fountain pen friendly paper.

I always used Adobe Acrobat because it's one of the only things that I can get to work between my phone and computer (albeit, not seamlessly most of the time.) One of the most beneficial things to look into if you are transferring scans of books, etc to a computer-annotatable form is optical character recognition (OCR) software. It's what picks up there are words on the page and adds the data for it. You can certainly highlight and annotate without it, but it does make it troublesome if you need to search for anything.

I personally [since everyone was talking about the printing stuff] do need to print stuff, but not to play with it with a pen, for some reason I write everything on a pc and play with it there, in a way it looks like it's been written with a typewriter, and it helps me remember it better. Tried writing, have three books of writing and notes, can't remember a thing of it. Anyone else does this?

I used to print out all my readings and then scan them back onto my computer after I marked them up by pen. Eventually I got comfortable doing that digitally with an iPad and Apple Pencil. I still write all my lecture notes and thoughts down on Rhodia paper using my Pelikan m805, and I scan those as well for archiving.

I do the same thing, I need to write on paper to process things better but I don’t like to have a million notebooks laying around, so scanning was the solution I found. and until now I was the only one I knew to do that. I'd love to see a review of the digital notepad you're using. The one thing I've always been curious about with such devices is what distinguishes them from an ipad and apple pencil, or a windows equivalent? To me, they should all be capable of the same things in terms of reading, note taking, annotating, and so on. But an ipad or Windows tablet has the added benefit of being able to be used for many other functions. So what is it about such devices that makes them more useful/appealing than a standard tablet?

I also love fountain pens, but I have not invested big in one. I just use an $12 Pilot Kakuno. I'm primarily an artist these days so the fountain pens are just one of many types of ink delivery mechanisms: changing them up keeps things lively and there's some wonderful stuff even among the office supply gels and rollerballs - I really like the character of Uni AIR pens although they are gushers on most papers. The paper quality matters(for ink, a smooth/bristol surface in medium weight usually gives the most polished, sharp lines, while textured papers impart some rough character but make many inks bleed), but the binding mostly doesn't, because what you do for that is use a binder clip and maybe manila cardstock if you need a cover. One clip can turn an ordinary wirebound notebook or glued sketchpad into a solid block that won't wear in transport - and that clip can also be a bookmark, a collation tool, and more. Clips are an "always keep in your bag" item for me. And the manila lets you decorate how you want, it's a pretty robust material.

Moleskine hasn't upgraded their paper, they've just become wildly inconsistent since outsourcing production entirely to China. Some of their notebooks are really nice and will last forever though others will bleed ink and fall apart. Leuchtturm1917 is having the same problems - they have been made in Taiwan for years though recent batches are coming, increasingly, from China and of worse (and far more inconsistent) quality. My favorite store only sells batches made in Taiwan because they had so many returns of the Chinese-made models.

i recommend getting a good monochrome laser printer (like 200 bucks from officeworks) - realised this after i finished my undergrad and after i spent hundreds on printing at uni unfortunately. ink is really cheap if you don't buy official cartridges, ends up being next to nothing

As someone who has watched WAY too many diaper bag videos, this was refreshing. I think all the items you carry are fantastic and simple. I may check out that pen; I have never used a fountain pen before but that one is intriguing. My husband splurged on the Remarkable 2 a couple months ago and he is really loving his as well. It helps him organize his work notes as well as personal. Plus our two children enjoy passing it back and forth during to church to keep them quiet. Thanks for sharing.

I'd love to hear a review on the paper tablet!
