Owned an RD400 back in the late 70s and that bike was scary fast. I bought an after market head w/dual coils and an expansion chamber and that bike could climb pine trees. I could not dump the clutch in any gear except for fourth gear, at speed. I went through two clutch packs in a six month period due to feathering said clutch to keep my front end down and steerable. Then came the KZ900 Kawasaki. What a four stroke wonder that bike was. Too much fun!!!

My friends used to bug me to race my RD against a friends "96 cubic inch" bike (The type is obvious). So, one day as we were driving on one of the secondary highways out to a little town, we hit an intersection and then turned left (to the west). I let the group get a bit ahead of me, then passed them all on the back tire. There was no more talk about racing. :) He might have beat me on top end though. My pipes were so peaky that they made virtually no power outside the resonant band (6000-9000) and I hit 9 grand by like 180km/h. The one thing I liked most about a 2 stroke though is that they *feel* more powerful than they really are. If you roll into the throttle before it's "on the pipe", when you finally do hit the powerband, it kind of feels like getting rear ended by something doing 20 miles an hour faster than you. :P That "race" story though, my bike was nowhere near stock (But not as insane as this guys bike in the video). I didn't even have a speedo, just a tach and dual pyrometers. Spent months porting those jugs and optimizing them as best as I could, making sure the exhaust ports lined up perfectly with the pipes themselves (no offset edges to create turbulence), and jetted the damn thing as close to blowing up without actually doing so as I could.

RD, RG, NSR, all quick bikes but fragile as fuck, in their favour was light weight, the noise and the smell of 2 stoke oil. MMMMMM. I have a GSX1400, with a full BOSS system, bigger injector bodies and a remapped ECU puts out 135bhp and 110 lbft of torque, 0-60 is 2.2 seconds standing 1/4 is 10 .6 sec. With a change of cams and a little more work with the ECU 165bhp is easy as well as 120lbft. Eats GSXR's, Bussas and even the hyper soprts BMW of the line to about the 100mph mark where their aero dynamics take over from my flying brick muscle bike. Grew up on KH's and RD's miss them for the noise, closest I get now is my old 84 KTM 495 crosser 120kg, 65bhp, a real hoot on road tyres.

That aspect actually got me in bad habits that nearly killed me one time riding a medium bore 4 stroke. I was used to being able to roll through gears and just snap the throttle shut anytime I wanted. One time, a friend let me ride his 600 he'd done some work too and I rolled through a few gears moseying around the back streets, then found a stretch of straight road and got er up to about redline in the top of 3rd and habit made me just snap the throttle closed. All of a sudden, there's this shudder, the handlebars shoot, the seat shook and I thought "Wtf just happened?". Then I realized, the back tire was hopping because it was doing like 1/4 of the speed the bike was doing. I rolled back into the throttle in time and got on top of it, but it was close. It had hopped out a good three to four inches to the side a few times before I came to my senses. Having said all this, that same guy scared the shit out of himself with MY bike too. I warned him "As you build RPM's, make SURE you roll almost all the way out of the throttle before you hit 6K. 5500 will barely hold road speed. 6K will snap the front wheel off the ground. Be careful". And of course, "Pffft, it's just a 350, I ride one liter bikes, this thing can't scare me". So, he's in second gear in the parking lot and he rolls all the way into the throttle... 2000 RPM, 3000, 4000, 5000, 5500, 5900... And, BAAAAM!!!! instantly from 6000 to 9000 RPM. The sand and dust (It was early summer so they hadn't swept the sand from winter off the parking lot yet) let the rear wheel break lose and since he'd rolled all the way into the throttle because he thought the power delivery was constant, once it hit the power band, the back tire just let go and stepped two feet out to the side instantly and it just revved until it hit the highest resonant point of the pipe. He never even left the lot. He just turned around, sat it on the side stand, got off and shakily walked back to his own bike. Good times. :)
@GamingHelp2 жыл бұрын
That's got to be the fastest RD I've ever seen. Good lord. I wonder how much trouble he has with the clutch. Mine was nowhere near like this (no NOS, just 110LL av gas, well tuned piping, ported, head work, etc, and it was jetted so close to the margins I can't believe I didn't undome a piston) and I STILL had issues with the clutch letting go when it was on the pipe. If you were in the higher gears where it had a bit of time to see it visually, you could see the tach hit the start of the pipes at about 6K, rev almost instantly to nearly 9, then as the clutch got hot, it would grab, drop down to about 7, go through the gear and then do it all over again the next gear. I eventually had the whole pack replaced and race springs put in.

I will say this about Suzuki they need to kiss Kawasakis butt. Right before 2000 and the Suzuki craze. I remember the ZX11 was still the speed King then Honda came out with the CBR 1100 XX and then Cycle World or one of those magazines I remember them saying there was rumor of suzuki-kawasaki merging and right after that the gsxr srad Hayabusa came out obviously that merger never happened but I'm betting Suzuki got some advice from Kawasaki because I remember if you mentioned GSXR back then in the mid-nineties most sport bike riders thought their sport bikes but they were fat and heavy of the sport bikes
@pdtech45244 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the RD has been stripped down to just a frame almost, so it's shed a lot of weight. A tuned light 2 stroke will always beat a heavy powerful much bigger 4 stroke! Don't forget the slimmer frontal area of the RD compared to the suzuki gsxr and the power delivery of a 2 stroke is incredible! My first bike was a suzuki er50 2 stroke single, learnt a lot about engine tuning, just putting a tuned expansion pipe on it, made a huge difference! Had a suzuki gs650 katana 4 cylinder 4 stroke, nice bike, unusual styling for the time. Went to a yamaha 350 ypvs after that and it felt like a racing bike compared, totally different way to ride, very little low down power, all mid and top end. Went back in time and bought an older, very smokey RD400e 2 stroke twin air cooled, again stripped the engine, rebuilt from crank up, rebore, new pistons, performance reed valves, swarbrick expansion pipes, powerful little thing, very short wheelbase compared to the rd350ypvs and very light front end, meant it was a wheelie machine lol Everytime you opened it up the front wheel would lift off the ground! Much improved low down grunt but left a big hole in the mid range power, like fueling was off and then the power came back on like someone had hit a turbo button, then things just went crazy! Had big plans to drag race it but blew a hole in the piston, think it was running too lean or not quite enough 2 stroke oil? The pump had been set to deliver too much oil when I got it so it smoked badly, adjusted it to spec but maybe the pump wasn't delivering enough, hence why previous owner had increased the setting? Who knows? Holed piston makes a big mess, was looking at another engine rebuild and crank rebuild so lost interest, sold to a mate for spares or repairs! Then got a Honda CBX1000 incredible 6 cylinder 4 stroke, incredible low down grunt and smooth power delivery right up to the redline......insane acceleration for a heavy bike, it was 10 years old when I bought it but was mint a real head turner, by this time there were loads of suzuki rgv250 2 stroke v twins about, proper little pocket rockets, they would be all.over me in the bendy stuff but I would leave them on the straights then they just used to fly last me on the twisty stuff lol ⚠️😊😁

The "mellow" phase 1 machine makes 207 bhp and hit a top speed (verified) at 204.56 mph, the phase 2 machine makes almost 6 horse more and weighs less than the ph. 1 bike. Any 500cc 4 strokes do that..., No? What about 600cc...., No? 900cc? 1000cc...., No? 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400..., still No?

I'm betting that RD is far from stock !!! and that dude on the gixxer probly can't ride ?
@factoryXperimental9 жыл бұрын
Eh, he kept the power to rear wheel. His take off was to be expected with stock suspension etc. The deal hear was a DOCH 1000cc inline 4 with about 150-170hp, versus a maybe 70-80hp(Very Big maybe) RD350 twin. The RD has a weight advantage, but the power to weight ratio goes to GSXR. The RD is just to dated to compete with modern motors, including modern two strokes engines of similar size.
