RD Burman's Dum Maro Dum Was Banned By All India Radio | Dev Anand

RD Burman's iconic song Dum Maro Dum was banned by the All India Radio. This song was featured in Dev Anand's movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna. RD Burman had chosen the versatile voice of Asha Bhonsle to sing this song that was ultimately filmed on Zeenat Aman. Dev Anand was initially reluctant to include this song in the movie but gave in after pressure from RD Burman & Asha Bhonsle. This song was suggested to RD Burman by Anand Bakshi who was the lyricist of Dum Maro Dum. This video tells the viewers why Dev Anand was reluctant to include this song in the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna and what happened to the fate of the song Dum Maro Dum after it got banned by the radio station in India. In 2021, a version of RD Burman's song Dum Maro Dum was used as background score for the launch video of Apple iPhone 13.

Still, though PANCHAM had shown his class with first classical debut by "ChoteNawaab", didn't stay with it,but went ahead to start an unending mission yet unbeaten by any Indian composer had to wait for decades to get an award,precisely 22 years(ChoteNawaab 1960 debut-1982 award for SanamTeriKasam). It was primarily decided to sing the song by Usha Uthhup. But Ashaji forced RD to change the decision. Later Ushaji told in an interview that it was obviously true Ashaji sang better this particular song than her. But at the same time she(Ushaji) lost an opportunity to built up her career by losing this song . Anyway Ashaji and Ushaji sang together in same movie another beautiful song "Hare Rama Hare Krishna ".

राहुल जी बहुत अच्छी बात सुनाई आपने। यह किस्सा खुद पंचम दा ने शेयर किया है। इसके मुताबिक फ़िल्म की चर्चा के दौरान ही बात में बात निकली। हिप्पी लोग दम मारो दम करते। आनंद बख्शी ने कहा कि दम मारो दम मिट जाए गम, बोलो सुबह शाम हरे कृष्णा हरे राम। आखरी शब्द तो फ़िल्म का नाम है। ऊपर की लाइन पंचम दा और बक्शी साहब की बात चीत से निकली है। एक बात और पँचम दा ने जीनत अमान को मस्का लगाया था कि वे देवानंद को इसगाने को फ़िल्म में रखने के लिए राजी करें। तो चौ तरफा दबाव बनाया गया। इतने बड़े फ़िल्म कार भी गलतियां करते हैं। सुपर हिट फिल्म गाइड का सुपर गाना आज फिर जीने की तमन्ना है, आज फिर मरने का इरादा है यह गाना भी देवानंद सा को पसन्द नही आया। फिल्मांकन के बाद भी जो उदयपुर से चित्तोड़ गढ़ किले तक था, बहुत झिझक रहे थे। पूरी यूनिट कह रही थी कि यह सुपर हिट है।परन्तु देव साहब को विश्वास नहीं था। सचिन देव बर्मन के डांटने पर फ़िल्म में शामिल किया। कमाल हो गया । मील का पत्थर साबित हुआ। बड़े जीनियस बड़ी भूल कर देते हैं। धन्यवाद राहुल जी।

What I have heard is Anand Bakshi (see the photo you have enclosed) use to smoke cigarettes keeping it between his ring finger and middle finger and then giving a long drag. RD on seeing this commented Dum Maro Dum. This inspired Anand Bakshi to write a song.

Armoghan Shah please share the proof if you have the support for the claims. RD Burman wasn't novice to lifting tads of western tunes, was inspired by others! But aplenty of the volume of work that imbibed quality of his genius stemmed out of his own original thoughts! He conceived this song in his dream, and then worked on it the next day, he did not "lift" or "get inspired" to compose the song Dum Maaro Dum.

I remember a funny story about ds song. During the late 90s and early 2000, there was a craze for parody songs, remix songs etc. At dat time me n my sister were kids. Everyday at noon on DD metro, for 10-15mins straight these songs were aired. One such song was there wd the lines"Duniya ne humko diya kya?"( reply at d back)Machhar"; "Duniya se humne liya kya?"(reply at d background)"Malaria"... 🤣🤣 Since then, wenever we two listen to ds original song, we mouth "Machhar" and "Malaria" to these lines... Yes, we still do ds 😁😁
