I don't really like the season. It mostly sems like they almost wanted to do a comedic Star Trek but then decided against it so they had to think up a reason why Lister and co. don't really get to do much and stay in one spot to not get involved with anything. Which is such a weird concept to me, after years of seeing them fighting off psychotic robots, parallel universes and weird existential constructs, it just feels wrong to brig the entire lot, while far more interesting ideas can be happening with RD as a whole. Honestly if they _were_ going to have to have to have new characters, why did they basically relegate all the known characters we've seen in flashbacks and whatnot to minor cameos just so we can spend the whole season with uppity guards and meatheaded psychos we have never seen before ?

@@mrcritical6751 Yes, this. For a series that used to take a fairly grounded (grounded for Red Dwarf, anyway) approach to general sci-fi elements, this should have made for an interesting premise.

I also need to make a note on something else. In this episode, the chief psychiatric counselor is called McLaren. In Queeg, the psychiatrist was named Brannigan. That could have been a mistake in continuity, or perhaps because McLaren was the chief psychiatric counselor, Brannigan could have worked under him. It should also be noted that Dr. McLaren also had a high-pitched voice like Brannigan did. In fact, when Rimmer did his impression of Brannigan, he did sound a bit like McLaren.

I think series 8 is the worst because it becomes essentially about frat boy humour I feel like I'm watching one of those garbage films like American Pie or Porkys, the depth is absent from the show for this first three episodes anyway. And bringing back the crew really does take away Red Dwarf's basic premise of them being isolated in the universe.
@EditedAF9872 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think the shakeup of the crew being resurrected could been really interesting, just seeing how our main cast adapts after years of isolation and free reign over the ship (or in Lister’s case, after years of development and maturation). But then they wasted it by throwing them all in prison. The frat boy humour certainly didn’t help either.
@Chiggins_6 жыл бұрын
Good Christ, I absolutely despise this season. I mean, you say you could do without the misogyny and rape but let it slide because "it's a product of its time". Okay but for the past 10 years of the show, Lister is a decent dude, and he wouldn't've used the sexual magnetism virus like Rohypnol to abuse Kochanski, and likewise later on in Krytie TV, he woudn't've continued watching the shower vids when he knew it was wrong. The first Season aired a whole decade earlier and woudn't've done something like this, so the whole "product of its time" thing doesn't fly unless the characters had always been consistently like that. This season has every. single. character. written completely wrong and doing things they wouldn't otherwise do, or just erases any development they'd gained in the past 7 seasons. And as you said, populating the ship and putting them in the cells just isn't Red Dwarf. That's not what the show's about, it's the complete antithesis. And then they didn't have enough content to fill the whole season, so they extend this and Pete to go on waaaaay too long. I don't get this season's weird obsession with sex and everyone being horny. I mean there's been sexual jokes in the past, but this has the sexual magnetism virus (which in Quarantine was just a one line joke, wasn't even used), the shower movies in Krytie TV, and the "Rimmer and Kochanski MUST HAVE SEX!" in Cassandra, it all feels so forced.
@Cyborcat6 жыл бұрын
I say "product of its time" because the 90's was the time when a lot of "gay jokes" were being used on TV, which wasn't as much of a thing in the 80's--progression doesn't always happen in a straight line, sometimes it takes a step back. If Season 8 were airing now, I'd be a lot harder on it. That doesn't mean that I don't acknowledge it being problematic, I just didn't feel the need to go on a long-winded rant about something from the past.

I still don't really get why there were 2 Hollys and why there weren't 2 Kochanskis, or why none of the Cats were ressurected.
@LittleMAC783 жыл бұрын
There were 2 Hollys because the original was on the watch that Lister found in the laundry basket and the other version of Holly was part of the rebuilt Red Dwarf which was an upgrade of the original as the Nanobots built the ship to the original design specification before budget cuts interfered with the building of the original ship. They explain that in the dialogue which is a nice way of the makers of the show getting around the fact that they no longer had the original models. The new version of Holly is part of the rebuilt ship whereas the original was left alone by the nanos. As Holly is a piece of technology, he/it was recreated with the rebuilt ship. The original cat people had all left the ship before Lister came out of stasis to search for "Fuschal", with the exception of 'Cat' and one elder, blind cat person who eventually dies after meeting 'Cloister the Stupid'. Kryten had not yet been found on the Nova 5 so his nanobots (responsible for the rebuilding of RD) would not have known about the cat civilisation who would not have been part of the ship's manifest anyway. The Nanobots only brought back people they could find records of who were not already alive. The Nanos didn't remake Kochanski as she was already alive (albeit from a different dimension) and on Starbug, the same way they didn't recreate a 23 year old Dave Lister who would also have been listed amongst the ship's original crew. I had to think about that a little bit but I think that explains it.
@Blurns3 жыл бұрын
@@LittleMAC78 I guess that works. It's still a bit weird that there were two Holly's, since the idea of transferring him to a watch is just weird in general.
@LittleMAC783 жыл бұрын
@@Blurns it might be weird from the viewpoint of when the episodes were made at the end of the 90's but it's not much further ahead than talking to Google or Siri on a smartwatch today and RD, the ship, was built about 200 years from now so an independent AI in a watch with a face isn't a huge leap. Even from the POV the late 90's, when the episodes of S8 were originally broadcast, Knight Rider back in the 80's (which ended only 2 years before RD started) had the hero interacting with an AI via a watch so they've only added video and built the AI into the watch. It's not a massive leap of imagination. There were 2 Hollys because he is an AI, he was part of the original design of the ship so was recreated to the original specs by the nanos who had no use for the original Holly in his senile, watch-based form. It might even be a plot point that Holly is able to be transferred to the watch because the AI has degraded over 3 million years into his senile form whereas the original would not fit.

I liked this episode a great deal. There is something to take note of: If you have ever heard Robert Llwellyn's real-life voice, it sounds just like Kryten does after his corrupted files are repaired. I love how Robert appears on the screen, and it is like he is the father of Kryten, just like Brent Spiner played Data's father, Dr. Soong, on Star Trek TNG. I wish they had actually done a full episode where they deleted Kryten's corrupted files and the others spend the episode trying to restore them. One of the best parts, in my opinion, is when Kryten takes them into the bathroom and looks at them. It is like he cannot vision it in his mind, so he has to do it in real life. Incidentally, where I have the full 8-season DVD set, it comes with Back in the Red and Pete both in full version form. I watched it like that. When I see a video of three half-hour episodes, that is approximately 90 minutes, so I consider it a movie, rather than a three-part episode. Either way, Back in the Red was acceptable.
@JamesPlaysGames955 жыл бұрын
can someone explain why why was there not another version of kochanski when microrobots re-created the ship and crew? cause the one hanging around with our main chrachters is a kochanski from another universe. and since the main universe's one is already dead, you'd think "the original" would be revived. idk, maybe the microbots detected there was already an instance of her nearby and decided not to duplicate her?
@Cyborcat5 жыл бұрын
I mean, the writers didn't even know what to do with ONE Kochanski, let alone two, so I'm not complaining. Serious answer: I always assumed it was the latter. Lister and Kochanski were both alive, so the nanobots didn't recreate either.

Love that they get back to Red Dwarf in series 8, hate that it's mostly set in The Tank. I could never get the hang of how many people were on the ship to begin with (early seasons say 169, but Justice says over 1,000, Red Dwarf USA it's 5,000 but either way there's 200 in the tank I guess). There's so much they could've done with it as well, they didn't have to make Hollister such a villain. It could have been an interesting look at how the crew deal with suddenly being 3 million years into deep space, and how the main cast reflect off this as Lister presumably would find himself slip back into his old life with his drinking buddies etc. The virus at the end could still have worked, wiping out the rest of the crew to restore the status quo for season 9, but yeah I don't really like much of season 8 other than Back in the Red

You do something and the virus just nudges your thoughts into doing the right things. They should have had the Sexual Magnetism work the same way. Rimmer drinks it and he just on instinct is able to say and do things that make him be more attractive to people. For me this is the worst series of the ones I've seen so far. Starting off with a three-parter that really should have only been a two-parter; they could have used that extra time saved to explore the concept they'll be introducing in the 4th episode. The ending is also equal parts the best and worst way for this show to end (back when it was originally canceled, IIRC). Edit: The inclusion of the prison also doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Like, why put Lister into stasis when they could have put him in prison for the remainder of the original tour. Concept they introduce in the next episode still could have worked, and more beneficially since they already had a ton of experience with what they'd be doing it, so being able to do it with more freedom could have yielded better results. Could have also let them explore the rest of the crew's reaction to Lister seeming to drastically change overnight, since it's still a difference between an afternoon for the crew and several years for Lister.

I was going to do it after 10 (so they'd be every five seasons) but I think I'm gonna do it after 9 at this point. Since apparently season 13 is already being talked about, I'll change it to every 4 seasons. So the next one will cover seasons 6-9 and the one after that will cover 10-13.

I’m a little confused about one thing in this episode: if all the crew was resurrected then where’s the Kochanski from their universe cause the Kochanski that’s with the main characters was from a parallel universe
@Cyborcat5 жыл бұрын
The writers couldn't even handle writing one Kochanski decently. I don't know why so many fans want a second one.
@thegreatstapley6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I'd have prefered this story to have ended with their second escape in Blue Midget, bringing back Rimmer, giving them a new ship set, and sending the crew out into the universe. It would also be pretty easy to recycle an episode like Cassandra to fit this idea too!

Part of me feels they should never have found Red Dwarf. The claustrophobic atmosphere of Star Bug just added to the tension and the comedy. Where as Red Dwarf felt safer being a 5 mile long mother ship. The extra tension added to the comedy I felt.

The ending to this season which was a whole rap up to red dwarf back then before the new seasons really was a big let down, and I can't wait to hear your take on it.
@TimeLordParadox6 жыл бұрын
It was more a bridge into the Red Dwarf movie, but the movie just wasn't going to happen. It was kind of a downer if it was the end. After all those adventures it looked like it was going to end on a dark note.

So if the red dwarf crew was restored wouldn't that mean there is another lister and kochanseki somewhere around.

series 7 has character development going for it and it has a few episodes i enjoy (tikka to ride, stoke me a clipper and i dont mind blue)series 8 is a few funny jokes without too much of a plot. its almost as if doug kinda gave up and went, pfff we could turn it inro porridge in space.

Say what you will about how bad season 8 is, but the very first scene I ever saw of Red Dwarf was Kryten being interviewed by the psychiatrist in the first episode of this season, and it convinced me to give the series itself a try.

I quite like the idea of bringing back the crew of Red Dwarf, but only for this one story. It would have been better for Back in the Red to play out with the crew then being killed off again at the end, returning everything to the status quo. Back in the Red is an odd one, and one in which I share very similar opinions of to this video. I do genuinely feel the cast are very much bringing their A game to the story, but I feel it's marred by being stretched over three parts. Mind you, whenever I go back and watch it, I end up watching the full amalgamated option present on the DVDs. It works much better like that, instead of three episodes, but I still think it should have been a whole part shorter. That second escape sequence always felt very, uh, extra, to me.

Divisive as it may be, I really like season 8. I like the Rimmer and Lister dynamic and I think Kochanski really fits in well here. The consent issues raised by the virus made me uncomfortable even when it first aired, but after realising that all of it happens after they've all licked an envelope, I ascribe it to the simulation messing things up in their heads.

I might be the minority here but I actually really like this season. I found season 7 a bore, I don't like Kochanski and Kryten was insufferable. It's wonderful to have Rimmer back! The series isn't the same without him. My favourite episodes are Cassandra and Pete.

When itcomes to continuity, I typically ignore most details as its about the seasons setting for the sake of the humour. That being said, shouldnt there be two Kochanskis?
@Cyborcat2 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing people say that, and my response is always going to be: "They couldn't even handle writing for ONE Kochanski". Serious answer: No need for the nanos to rebuild someone who already exists.

Personally I wouldn't call that guy wearing women's stockings joke transphobic, at least in the way most people mean it nowadays. It's not about transgendered people, just transvestites, which is actually a term for straight men who like to wear women's clothing/underwear in private (such as under there regular clothes, like portrayed, or at home) or during sex. I looked up that term a long time ago when i heard in Rocky Horror Picture Show, and realized they used it wrong as Dr. Frankenfurther has Gay sex.
@Cyborcat6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's why I said "borderline". Tho it's still making fun of the idea of a man wearing "women's clothes", and it could be argued that that line of thinking makes it harder for trans people to be accepted. I dunno, maybe that's a stretch, but that's what I was thinking when I commented on that. Either way, that gag kind of rubs me the wrong way *shrug*
@alex.thedeadite6 жыл бұрын
Firstly, that's true, I could see that argument. And secondly, that feeling's understandable.
@JackChristmas6 жыл бұрын
Wait... surely the transphobia is in the part where Kryten is designated a woman because he doesn't have a penis? That's not even borderline. That's the show literally telling us that hundreds of years in the future, people (or at the very least, prisoners) are still refused the right to identify as non-binary gender, their gender identity is 100% decided by the presence or absence of one particular type of genitalia (because the absence of a penis makes Kryten a woman, but the absence of a vagina doesn't make him a man???), and institutions are so single-minded about this that they even apply it to ROBOTS. The human race in Red Dwarf is a society that fully recognizes the personhood of a robot, but doesn't even acknowledge that trans people exist. That is bleak as hell.
@Cyborcat6 жыл бұрын
When I mentioned "borderline transphobia", I was referring to the counseler wearing stockings and garters. The bit with Kryten could be taken one of two ways, but one of those definitely comes across as transphobic, like you said. It also implies that man is the default and if you don't have "man parts" than you're a woman, as if woman is some kind of off-shoot of man. So, it could be either misogynistic or transphobic ... or both, I guess. That's why I didn't want to go into it too much in the video, there's a lot to unpack. But, yeah, I agree with you.
@Myndir6 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that the importance of Kryten not having a penis was to avoid him using it in prison. That's why the absence of a vagina isn't important, IN THEIR VIEW. They don't literally think that he's female. But, mainly, it's so that Kochanski had someone to interact with in prison, because otherwise she'd have even less to do this season.

Well, I've missed these! I have to agree: series 8 isn't the best as an overall package but a lot of the component parts are very good... I think it was around now that I suspected Red Dwarf had outlived its time. It was slowly becoming something like the comedy equivalent of a coelacanth. Small note, I don't 100% agree with you about the 'implied misogyny and borderline transphobia'. The guys get just as much fun poked their way about matters sexual and that 'therapist' dude could just as easily be into women's clothes. *shrug* In isolation I can kind of see where you're coming from with that but taking the show as a whole RD is pretty good at pointing out and commenting on creepy or shameful behaviour of that sort, even within... remember when it was actually even a little unfair on the boys by implying they were creeps and lechers when they visited the mirror-gender universe? And of course there's "Krytie TV" coming up, which plays that kind of thing for laughs... but of course Red Dwarf plays EVERYTHING for laughs to some degree or other because comedy. It's possible to laugh at a horrible thing, in fact one of the best ways to learn to handle and grow past it. (Christ, not such a small note after all)

The Dwarf is the size of a city. Sections and decks numbering in the hundreds. But there's no deck 13?
@Cyborcat6 жыл бұрын
It's possible that people think that they skipped over 13 when naming the floors--sometimes they do that with tall buildings, they'll skip over 13 when naming them due to people being superstitious about that number. (in America, at least--I don't know if that applies to the UK or not).
