I really have to thank you for this very helpful tutorial. By your instructions i was able to repair my UEFI on my ASUS Z97-P Board. After i installed Vanguard (an anti cheat protection measure operating on windows kernel level for the recently released game Valorant by Riot) my computer was not able to display any video output or to power usb devices. my last option before buying a new board was to reflash the bios which surprisingly actually worked.

@@tdkxbalor9397 i guess the corruption happened right after i restarted my pc. After installing valorant and it prompting that i need a reboot to Initialize vanguard which i did, the pc was no longer able to boot. Just a black screen and fans spinning without any sign of life.

Hi!! I have a Sager NP9870 (Clevo P80DM-G). When I bought it, years ago, it came with just one GTX 980M. So now I bought another GTX 980M in order to make them SLI. I asked for them to send it with 1617 ID but they sent me with 13D7 ID. So I couldn’t flash it right with the vbios from the older one using Nvflash. I forced with the Nvflash mismatch version and the bios chip got really messed up. So I bought spares from the same chip (MX25L2006EZNI - 12G) and spare one from the older plate (25Q20BT) and ended up dessoldering the chip from the new one and putting a 25Q20BT in the place (with the vbios from the older one flashed inside using CH341A SPI flasher). When the new 980M arrived, the notebook didn’t even started if I put it in the master slot. Now with this modification, it goes to the windows all right but I don’t get image (not even through HDMI). So the idea here is to have both cards with the same vbios and ID in order to make them SLI. The notebook bios recognize both cards but the windows just the older one (with the 1617 ID). What can I do to make this work as SLI? I have my notebook with windows 10, both cards (the 1617 one is already inside of course), SLI cable, both heatsinks and even that cooper plate that was hard to find (I have the two necessary units). I have the CH341A SPI flasher and adapters to use the right voltage. And I have a couple units from both chips (MX25L2006EZNI - 12G and 25Q20BT. The 25Q20BT is so much easier to solder and it is the same model that the older plate uses. And I tried a lot of the drivers version from Nvidia and nothing, even cleaning with DDU. Would you help me to make it work? Appreciate it and thanks in advance. I really hope you can guide me to get there and I don’t think I’m that far away!!

I wonder would just reseating the flash IC have worked? That type of IC socket is low quality and inclined to cause poor connections when a bit of corrosion forms between the IC legs and the socket contacts (and the IC legs did looks a little grubby). Unless the contents of the flash had somehow become corrupt, its hard to see how a previously-working motherboard would suddenly stop working in a way that would require a BIOS upgrade to repair. Still, its interesting to see the procedure - thanks.
@rdagger5 жыл бұрын
Great point! I should have tried reseating first. If I had not already returned the computer, I would test your theory. Thanks, I will make a note on my website write-up. Regardless I would still make a backup of the existing firmware while the chip was out to ensure copies of the relevant BIOS fields.

Great Video. Can you do a Video on a board that needs a bios flash with bios chip with 1.7V to 1.95V requirements?
@rdagger Жыл бұрын
Sorry I don't have much free time these days. I recommend you take a look at the Adafruit level shifter: www.adafruit.com/product/757. They are relatively easy to use. You would connect the HV pin to 3.3 V on the Pi, and the LV pin would connect to a power supply generating 1.7 V to 1.95 V which could also power the flash chip. Then MOSI, MISO, CLK and CS from the Pi would be connected to the higher voltage side pins B1 - B4. Then the corresponding lower voltage pins A1 - A4 would be connected to the flash chip. You would also need to connect the grounds from the Pi, the flash chip and the power supply so they are common. There is a similar diagram of using a level shifter in my OpenOCD tutorial: www.rototron.info/circuitpython-nrf52840-dongle-openocd-pi-tutorial/ except there is no additional power supply because the target board is providing the lower voltage.

@rdagger3 жыл бұрын
Flash chips are generally sold blank. You could not install a replacement without programming it. If your chip is socketed you should try reseating it because it might just be a bad connection. Your problem could very likely be other hardware such as the memory. I would test the memory, graphics cards and power supply before reprogramming the BIOS. Also examine the motherboard for any bad caps.

@rdagger4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t sound like a damaged bios. It could be a lot of things but since it happened during a Windows update (I assume that is what you meant by update), it is probably a partition problem. I’d get a Windows 10 media USB drive (I assume you are using Windows 10) and try the Repair your computer option. Under System Recovery Options choose Command Prompt. Run diskpart and make sure the correct partition is activated. Afterwards run bootrec /rebuildbcd. If that doesn’t completely fix the problem, it will hopefully get you to the point where you can run System Recovery Options - Startup Repair. This is a relatively advanced repair and my suggestion is only a guess. I am not a Windows expert. You could lose data!

You might be able to get the MAC address from your router logs or it could be printed on a sticker on your network card. You can always make up a MAC address using an online MAC address generator (just google it). Serial numbers are often on the motherboard or the case depending on the brand. I suppose you could just create a new serial number and system UUID although it could cause some licensing issue with existing software on the computer.

Just a nitpick, UEFI is a replacement for BIOS, not a type of BIOS

I have another video where I desolder a bios chip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX_cXpKQr7KhfZI You can also use IC test clips or possibly a SPI port.

@@rdagger The problem is that my chip is also UEFI, and I already have a raspberry pi
@rdagger4 жыл бұрын
Reading and writing flash chips works the same regardless if the BIOS is legacy or UEFI. The Pi is just being used as a programmer to read and write BIOS chips instead of a USB programmer. With respect to UEFI, it is just a matter of getting the correct firmware and editing any necessary fields prior to programming.

could someone (that knows what they are doing) re-write (UEFI) bios to enable M.2 slot (or PCIe 4x NVMe adapter) to enable bootable NVMe drive?? (Lenovo ThinkStation C30 - type 1136... FWIW)... "128Mbit SPI Flash with FWH"???

it's so much easier when you can just pull bios chip out. on most new motherboards damn bios is soldered down.
