Regarding your Imperialstar at 13:50 - I've read lots of different theories or claims on what the Zola coat is really for. Some say it's just for cosmetics, others say it is for moisture protection, and others say it is to strengthen the shells to keep in tune under changes in temperature and humidity
@evanjewett2210
@evanjewett2210 2 жыл бұрын
I can attest to the moisture protection. Unfortunately, at one point my basement flooded and the drums had standing water inside of them. Luckily they did not get damaged, only some surface rust on the hardware that came off.

Your Tama Superstar Dream kit (15:22) is the exact kit I played back then. I bought the kit with the double braced hardware and bass pedal for $1500.00 brand new. Did some touring and a ton of lounges. I did some recording at Tree Publications in Nashville (I think it was demolished and is now the Sony Studios) with it. Back then, almost every bar had a band. The bar you played determined how good you were in the public's view. Yep, that's my "Back in the Day" story.

I love your vids, Dave. Something about the way you are very nonchalant about everything makes them easy to watch plus you are a very good drummer. Recently I bought an older Yamaha Club Custom that was at a local pawn shop in mint condition, and the set is beautiful, but it has the best sounding kick I have ever owned. Plus it came with an 80s Ludwig Acrolite that just smacks so well. I only gave $150 for the whole kit because they had no idea what it is worth. Keep giving us these longer vids. They are a very welcome length since most of your vids are rather short

If you did thin the herd, how do you choose what goes or stays? Every kit has a story and they all seem somewhat unique. I would love to see these kits ranked by sound, rarity, $$$. Like, I wanna know if you had to start over, what would you buy first?

I like your channel rdavidr, you’ve got a unique mix of the practical and experimental, but most of all it’s easy for people to relate to you because you’re so down to earth. I think a few videos focusing on the practical side of hardware, minimalist stand & rack concepts for home and portable use would be a logical progression. That being said, you know what would really help grow your channel? If you were to dedicate yourself to becoming a really badass drummer… dynamics, speed, improvisation, rudiments, these are the technical aspects of drumming that everybody wants to have, but relatively few actually feel motivated to pursue. You could be that inspiration and take your drum game to the next level at the same time. You have the talent and potential to make it happen.

I'm a bassist, but when I set up for band practice, I set my drummer's kit. I usually sit at it for 10 or 15 minutes, and have been learning to play. I feel it keeps the rhythm section working as a single unit. Anyways, just today, I bought myself a very early (probably 1996 or 1997) Yamaha Stage Custom four piece set. I can't wait to get it tuned and functional.

You tune exceptionally great.

my first and only professional kit was the second hand Japanese STAR kit that came to me (my parents bought it) with bent hi hats & a cloth like cymbal. I fixed it up, much gaffa tape & time in my grandfathers work shed... I had an offer to buy it from a studio I recorded in, the snare had "the" sound the engineer was after. I kept it, though my father encouraged me to sell it... I just couldn't do it to the old "blind" studio engineer. The snare, I made it last... it sounded great until the day I gave the kit to a kid in the street. I thought that the best path for it... now I own a SONOR to my joys.

@@colin6768 Three set up. An old old Ludwig, A Mapex, and a Premier from back in the day. Then have a couple storage racks with drums and hardware. Probably enough to make two more 5 piece sets with a decent amount of cymbal holders. I think the problem lies in with the stuff on the shelves. Ohh and in the basement all the end tables and ottomans are drums. Sooo maybe instead of 5 piece sets I could make some 6-7 piece sets. Take care. Just stumbled to your channel today and I've been watching for hours. I don't play drums myself, but I'm a drum sound geek! You seem to know what you like and don't. I have a video suggestion that this video inspired: Combine a kit from you favourite pieces. I heard you say this and that is your fav snare or BD. Why not do the Frankenstein kit that has all the individual pieces that you like the most. I do understand, that it's not as simple as that: they don't match probably, but that's the fun of it. Anyway: Keep up the good work. I'll be watching! =)

In 1979 I saw Buddy Rich playing a Fibes snare in Pekin Illinois. I had opportunity to speak with him after the show; and, as I played a brass wrapped fibes kit at the time I had to ask him about, first, the brand... He smiled and gave me a thumbs up. Then I asked about the snare and he said, "I love my fibes snare." He expounded upon the character of the drum but I do not recall the details. I only say this because of your less than enthusiastic comments concerning your fibes snare drum. No judgement intended. Just an old man recalling a fond memory. I tend to ramble these days.
