Back before cymbals had painted names on them I used to and still do clean them with comet or any scouring powder and water, I always liked a bright clean look and this was the fastest and cheapest. Thnx.

You might find parcel tape (don't know if that's what it's called in the US... packing tape?) works better than duct tape to make a head. Used to make little bongo-ish things with thick cardboard tubes and parcel tape and they were surprisingly decent sounding. Not a drummer so can't I test it on an actual drum and maybe it wouldn't scale as well, but I would think you'd be able to pull the tape a bit tighter when sticking it down and get more of a membrane. Would likely need a few layers laid in opposing directions like you did with the duct tape, and probably still wouldn't last super long against drums sticks, but might be interesting to see if it sounds better? Probably an even cheaper hack, too!

Windex with a little more amonia added works good for light cleaning and fingerprints. CLR and Lime Away agood for heavier cleaning. Many think dirty, grimy cymbals sound best. Balony. Clean cymbals ping clear and sharp. Crisper high hat and crash cymbals are my choice.

I use vinegar and real lemon juice to clean my cymbals. After 37 years, I finally got around to cleaning my hats which are mid 70's Zildjians that I got in 1985. They were caked in years of cigarette smoke, spilled bear, KFC , sweat, probably a bit of blood and dead skin cells and were almost black. The vinegar and lemon juice made them look like new again. I use a lemon cut in half as the cleaning sponge. I do this on all my cymbals now.

There surely is a (non-digital) way to eliminate the round 22 or 24 inch kick and replace with an adequately sounding boxy object, of smaller size, which achieves the thumping effect. Suitcase. Djembe. Cajon. Cardboard box and mic. The mic itself with padded something. Roto Tom. Wooden board.

You two are brilliant, started my day with a smile you did. Thank you. I'm just getting started with playing again after nearly 30 years away from the kit and as my budget is tight I'm buying used gear. I picked up a set of Meinl hats cheap that sound beautiful but the top cymbal is really oxidised whilst the lower of the pair is beautiful and bright. I'd like to bring the top one back up to a nice finish again but I don't want to do it the wrong way. I don't think the Lemon Pledge would have the muscles to do what I need it to do. Have you got any suggestions please?
