EXACTLY. I got a Ludwig Jr kit for $200, and didn't REPLACE jack. I just TWEAKED what it already had. (I reduced, mostly: ditched the adorablefloor tom, the cymbal stands, the reso heads and rims [my goal was to make it as minimal and light and quiet and tight as possible, to play outdoors]. I cable-tied two DRUMSTICKS to the mounted toms, as Cymbal Stands (!) and did add a Dollar Tree Plastic Vase ("cowbell") via cable-ties. It was ugly black so I took GOLD holographic ductape ($1!) and cut it into diamonds and afixed on all the shells. I taped the heads a bit too with this cool trippy tape to mute stuff, and my kit sounds INCREDIBLE. I added a couple small cymbals too. I really dislike waste, as well. I never ever break guitar strings, and I never break drumsticks or drumheads! I may be the lightest-touch drummer on earth, b/c i practice outdoors using rods.

That’s like saying it’s the ship of Theseus if you replace the strings on a guitar. Goes to show that heads + proper tuning are responsible for 90% or more of the sound you will hear from your drums. Growing up I always played entry level kits, but would immediately swap out the stock heads for quality Evans, Remo or Aquarian. A few years ago I had enough saved to buy any kit I wanted. I looked at DW Collector's Series, but ultimately decided they were not worth the price and went with PDP Concept Maple for a fraction of the cost. Despite what John Good says about lining up the grain patterns and everything else to get you to spend $4000 or more on a shell pack, it's not worth it. My PDP Concept Maple set has Evans G2 batter and Evans G2 reso on the toms with Evans emad 2 on the kick. I've compared the sound of my kit to a friends's Collector's Series and in a live setting, there is no difference. Sure, in a studio with $7,000 Neumann mics you may be able to hear a slight difference, but rehearsing with your band or playing live, you will not hear it. I have recently setup a home studio with Shure, AKG and MXL mics and the drums sound great on my recordings. Save your money for quality heads and learn how to tune and you can make any kit, even a kid's set or the cheapest used kit sound good.
@JeserNoob6 жыл бұрын
maprow at that point you’re buying something (DW Collectors) as a reward perhaps for reaching a milestone or for the recording situation like you mentioned. Also the quality of build in terms or craftsmanship, parts, longevity and stability tend to be greater on premium kits because although they might sound similar you’re paying for more durable and robust parts.
@MetalxMasters6 жыл бұрын
The price I would personally stop at is about $2,800 for something like a Tama B/B kit, and then order the additional drums I want later. If you start on a good kit with great heads, hardware and awesome cymbals you can never go wrong. DW, to me, is like the Gibson of drums. Overpriced for what you get. But I understand why people like them.

@@tomj2064 First of all, pretty sure cotton drumheads don't exist unless you're referring to animal hides. Secondly, obviously changing styles of drumheads like going from mylar to mesh is going to make a difference, but so is changing from 14 guage metal strings to nylon strings on a guitar. Also, drumsticks hardly make a difference sound-wise in the context of the whole kit. Unless you're playing on a practice pad, it's very hard to hear the different unless it's drastic like going from a 7a birch to 3s oak stick. Drumsticks are way closer to guitar picks in that sense.

My very first drum set was a 'kid's set': a Remco 'Liverpool Compact' three-piece kit with a 12" snare drum, a 10" rack tom, and 16" bass drum. And it had a 10" gold-colored sheet metal cymbal. It was in blue color paper wrap around the drums with plastic hoops. I believe the shells were pressed paperboard of some kind. The thing is; the batter heads were Remo coated plastic heads and were fully tunable. The snare drum had snare wires on the resonant head. The bass drum batter head was a tunable plastic head and the reso side 'head' was some kind of paperboard. That was the kit that got me started and as I recall they actually sounded pretty good for a cheap 'kids set'. I received it for a Christmas present when I was 12 years old and I was thrilled to get it after begging for a drum set after I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I have fond memories of jamming in the basement with neighborhood kids..learned to play 'Wipe Out' on that kit started me on the road to a lifetime of fascination with drumming. The Remco 'Liverpool Compact' kit was a step up from the usual 'kids sets' of the time as it had actual tunable batter heads it was quite fun to play.

So adding about $120 in drum heads, then $350 or so for the K-Dark cymbal, another $70 for the Trashformer, another $70 for the bottom of the hi-hat, and say $130 for the EFX hi-hat top. This isn't making a kid's kit sound good, it's putting the wooden parts FROM a kid's kit into a more expensive one.
@ballsrgrossnugly5 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyJayJonson And I believe the cymbals were part of a drum kit last I checked? I don't see the title saying "make the snare tom and kick sound better by spending money on them" or anything like that. This video is useless clickbait shit.

@@ballsrgrossnugly No new drummer should be shopping childrens drum sets. That should go without saying. This isn't a video to show you how to make a childs kit work. It was a fun challenge for them. There is no magic $50 drum kit for new drummers that will also sound amazing, it doesn't exist. You get a cheap used set inside your budget and you rebuild it over time, new heads, pick up a cymbal here and there, replace hardware and eventually you have a nice kit. Heads are the cheapest and best way to give a kit a makeover though. Shop used, kits, cymbals, and hardware are all fine used when in decent shape. Don't even bother looking at new if you want the best bang for your buck.
@ballsrgrossnugly5 жыл бұрын
@@BLTspace Since when did I imply that kids drum sets are a good idea for a starting drummer? I'm sorry, if you want to make shit up and imply that it was my idea, you should join the Catholics, they seem to be good at projection. As I stated in reply to your previous incoherent rant, and I will put it another way for you, just to make sure your 10 year old brain gets it. I could title a video "can you make a guitar sound like a drum kit" and then replace the strings with a snare, the pots with a kicker, the tuning pegs with cymbals, and the bridge with a cowbell, and by your logic, that would be just fine. No clickbait here, move along. You, fucking, moron.

@@ballsrgrossnugly When you complain that the video wasn't serious enough and that they cheated with an extra drum... the only thing i can take from that is that you're looking to seriously use a kids drum set. Other than that you're just mad and complaining for the sake of complaining. Just look at your replies. This was a fun challenge co op video and you're raging in comments lol. The drums sounded way better with new heads. WTF did you expect. Just leave your dislike and move on to the next video, nobody cares.

It's literally impossible to make stock heads and cymbals to sound. They all need replacing. The shells and hardware are "fine" with some minor adjustments. Even a nicer adult drum kit will still likely require new heads and cymbals.

I took a SPL 16" bass drum changed the batter head, what I did was to cut a single 16" outer studio ring used it in the inside, added a 10" tom and a 13" floor tom, added studio rings and it sounds GREAT, now it's got 5 drums, 8" 10" 13" 16" and 10" snare, before finishing, I stripped the shells, rewrap them, with a sparkle material, I played an outdoor gig with it and it had many compliments on the drumset.

I just picked up this same kit on marketplace for $50 to use on our local "porchfest" concerts. One Saturday per year, various homes on main street in Henderson Ky lend their front porches to local talent. Some of the porches are tiny, and the fun is fitting the whole band on it (sort-of like stuffing 30 clowns in a Volkswagen bug). People drive for miles just to come walk main street porchfest. Its free and fun. I'm stripping mine down to bare wood, and gonna do a blue to natural fade with Spraymax 2k automotive glossy clear in a rattle can. (Sold at our local PPG). I also picked up a used pearl export 12" tom that I'm going to convert to a floor tom. I keep good used heads in my studio closet for emergency use. (I change heads almost as often as a guitarist changes strings.) So heads will be free. I ordered a 16" emad batter head for the kick. Finally, I'm using cheap sound percussion stands and Agazarian cymbals. (Why not? They'll sound as good as the rest of the kit.😁) I see no need in bringing my good cymbals to a low volume setting. We cant get too loud or we will interrupt the other band down the street. So we use hot spots as mains and in-ears for monitors. Paint and all, I'll have spent a little over $100 because I already had the heads, stands and cymbals.

I just had this kit delivered to my house today! The only difference is that I got the 5 pc. with one more tom. It's mainly going to be for my kids but I want it to actually make proper drum sounds - like with the mods that you did. I'm hoping that I won't have to dump a bunch of time and money into replacing heads. I suppose if I'm going to introduce them into the world of drums I have to show them the other parts of it too, like the tinkering and experimenting. If it doesn't even have a chance of sounding good or musical then it reduces the chance that they will stay interested in it. I'm hoping that I'll need to spend more money on a good set in the future, (un)fortunately! Looks like I'll be shopping for some Remo heads on Amazon. Any other suggestions for a shopper on the Canadian side of the border?
