john was right, who actually cared about asuma? he basically got all of his backstory/character development immediately before his death. zabuza's death was way more impactful since it was the first death naruto experienced, the whole haku/zabuza bit, etc. idk if there are 5 moments sadder than the haku/zabuza thing, especially when naruto was just like...you really gonna act like you don't care that haku died? basically we got jiraiya's death, maybe when you find out that itachi was basically forced into killing his clan, when you find out rock lee might not be able to be a ninja anymore...gaara's sad-ass backstory, etc. they really tried to make you care about asuma when you had spent like 300 chapters not caring about him at all. if it had been guy getting killed and lee/neji/tenten crying about it, that would've been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more impactful than asuma dying imo

Honestly, I think the Zabuza/Haku arc is my favorite arc of pre-time skip Naruto. It sets up everything that is going to happen between Naruto and Sauske going forward, it leads to Sakura getting her character development in the Chunin Exam arc, it teaches Naruto that the shinobi stuff truly is not a game, we get to see Nine-Tail Naruto for the first time and really see how dangerous he can be if left unchecked, and the fact that I still could be explaining elements of how this one arc builds damn near the entire foundation of the rest of Naruto and Shippuden should speak for itself. I haven't even talked about the Sharingan and how it completely changes how we view Kakashi as a character. Asuma dying is sad only because Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji are beloved characters, and it was hard to see them upset. It has its effect on the series, but it's not the same as the effects Zabuza and Haku have on the plot and themes of the series.

That scene as John mentioned significantly impacted his feelings towards Sasuke and wanting to always be there for him, which he tried doing the entire show. Like John stated, the main character was significantly impacted, by virtue of significance is far more impactful than who Mark even stated is a side character.

Everybody but John need to rewatch the Wave Arc. The entire point of Naruto is setup in that arc because of the "Ninjas are tools to be used" VS "Ninjas are people who endure." philosophies. It's when they present the idea of "What does it mean to be a ninja?" Naruto and Sasuke spend the entire show figuring that out and that's why it ends when Sasuke figures out being a shinobi is "To keep enduring until it comes to be, no matter what".

Think about how the zabuza scene sets the tone for the whole series. At the time we had only had a glimpse, of how dark and cruel the ninja world would be. It builds the foundation of the the show and presents concepts like, saving your comrades no matter the cost, the cruelty of the ninja world, how even the worst of characters have a spark of humanity in them and how narutos words and actions can change even these kind of charcters. Nine tails, sharingan, Team 7 first real world experience really and the list goes on and on. And in the end when zabazu goes rampage, just with a sword in his mouth, you are like wtf, he really did have feelings for haku. I still get the chills thinking about it. Also, at the time, so early into the series, this whole arc was ground breaking. I remember people had zabuza very high on their favorite character list for a very long time.

Okay going back to the point where John said his biggest point is how it affected Naruto. Literally we never seen Naruto have murderous state of mind. When he came face to face with KaKaZu. We all knew KaKaZu wasn't going to live. He told Kakashi to stand back. Tighten up his headband. Naruto gave him his best and took out like 3 of his hearts. Kakashi finished him off. It was poetic for Shikamaru to kill Hidan.

I think zabuzas death was more impactful..but it wasn’t sadder and I say that because it showed Naruto his ninja way and made him who he was. That’s the only reason I feel like it was more impactful..

Hands down Haku & Zabuza for me. Haku dying for Zabuza, Sasuke pump fake death which was the first one of the show, Naruto fox mode raging over him believing he died, Kakashi disgusted by Zabuza lack of humanity for not caring about Haku dying, Naruto breaking down in tears over the disregard Zabuza showed and realizing how cold a ninja can be, Zabuza breaking down over Narutos words,Zabuza with a knife and no hands slaughtering those ninjas to get to Ghatto, and Kakashi giving Zabuza his dying wish of Dying next to Haku! For me its one of the most emotional scenes in stories period. I love that Shikumaru scene too no downplay.
