2017? God I can't believe it's already been 7 years since Chester left us. Thank God we have his music forever. It's like he wanted to give us that gift before he had to go. I've always loved their music but since he's been gone I feel all of these songs on another level now. Just knowing how much he was truly struggling and then finding out why. There's a special place in hell for people that hurt children and I hope whoever hurt him gets what they deserve. He was a one of a kind male vocalist. No one will ever sound like that again I'm afraid.

This music video also hints at what lead Chester to do drugs to begin with. Chester was sexually abused by an older boy who he thought was his friend. It started at 7 years old and ended at 13 years old. Chester started doing drugs and drinking alcohol at 11 years old just after his parents divorced. He lived with his dad but he was either working or asleep. His dad was a detective for the Phoenix Police Department investigating sex crimes against children. When Chester finally told his parents about the abuse his dad was very upset about not realizing his own son was a victim of the crimes he investigated and didn't recognize the signs in his son. By the time he told them his abuser couldn't be charged as the statute of limitations had run out quite a few years before. He was afraid to tell anyone what was happening when it was happening because he was afraid they would think he was gay. It happened in the 1980's.

Years ago, a friend of mine invited me to his show. He played guitar for a metal band and he wanted me to watch them play. Near the end of the show, they started a cover of Crawling. After the introductory vocal part, the singer put her hand in the air and the band stopped playing. She said that with all the singing she had been doing, she wouldn't be able to perform that song. She looked at me and asked if I would be willing to get up and sing it. I got onto the stage and sang it for her. I am a classically trained vocalist, but I have taught myself how to perform metal vocals on my own time. That really is a difficult song to sing. After the show, she told me, "Thank you for saving my @ss."

Someone that worked with Lp described Chester’s voice as having this ability to sound like multiple voices at once. You can almost hear these harmonies in his voice when he’s singing. It’s just incredible
@JaPls4 ай бұрын
You didn't notice that Chester's voice is actually playing a chord, it's not just raspy singing. If you break down his singing, his voice has tritones or harmonics or whatever it is. If you actually look at the EQ of his vocals there are two or three notes happening simultaneously and they're all in key

I really appreciate how, when time permits, you go through the song again and talk more over it. A lot of channels try to capture the reaction at the detriment of the commentary, and others sacrifice reaction for commentary. Your method allows for the best of both worlds! Plus, having already listened makes the commentary more insightful.

Doug, check this out: If you listen really closely, you'll hear a MAJOR 3rd over that C# in the chorus, unlike in the verse where it's minor like you said. And since the vocals are alternating between the 5th and MINOR 6th, that creates an AUGMENTED triad (!!). That's really ballsy in my eyes, subtle as it may be, and it's definitely a characteristic of the early 2000s Nu Metal wave.

As a longtime linkin park fan and watcher of your channel, I enjoyed this a lot! :) First, I want to say that their discography is definitely worth exploring. It is more rich and varied that basically any other mainstream modern rockband I know. So, there are a couple songs off their album A Thousand Suns that may be fascinating to you. "Waiting For the End" and "The Catalyst"+"The Messenger" (short, heartfelt bookend to the album). Great music videos for both. I'm sure you'll be getting tons of requests for their more popular stuff, but I think their underappreciated stuff can give you a more holistic view of their music.

Those chords in the chorus are really cool. Mike Shinoda is a great songwriter, and is really good with hiding cool stuf in, what may seem, 'simple' songs. Also, that vocal melody in the chorus feels minor, while the chords are major.
@gthobaben4 ай бұрын
I had never realized the C# chord in the verse is major until today. It also makes the voice leading in the guitars go from playing an E#(F) down to E for the A chord next. That half step down in the guitar voice feels so heavy.

I think by far their most underrated record (and one of my favorites of all time) is A Thousand Suns. I've been a fan of Linkin Park since their first album dropped and I've watched so many reactions to their music. You are the first person that I've ever seen talk about how the music itself reflects the lyrics ("I've felt this way before, so insecure" reflected in an insecure melody over a sturdy chord progression, creating confusion, much like "confusing what is real"). I very much appreciate your analysis. It gives me a greater appreciate for a group I already had a health appreciation for. Thank you so much for this. I would love to see more reactions to their music. "Somewhere I Belong", "Faint", "In The End", "and Breaking The Habit" are all great songs for reactions. "Given Up" is always a fun one as well. If you continue for a while, know that their sound changes drastically over time. You might get a lot of views for "One More Light". I personally cannot watch reactions to it though, it's too sad.

Chester actually wrote most of the lyrics to this song with Mike helping him. This song was hard for him to sing in this way on his vocal cords and it was also hard emotionally as a reminder of his addictions that he could not over come. Chester got sober from drugs in 2005 or 2006 but the alcohol addiction was something he just couldn't overcome every time he tried. He used music as his healthy way of dealing with his demons that also helped other people to overcome their problems which made him feel good about what he was doing.
