I love how this somehow seems to tell a story. At the start, the cougar was constantly attacking John, and seriously inhibiting progress. As the build continued, he gradually learns how to fend off its attacks. Until finally, at the end, he has befriended and trained it… to attack Uncle. Pure poetry.

The symbolism is surreal. When life (a cougar) tries to get you down (by mauling you to death), the truest expression of endurance is to continue moving forward (with building your house), no matter what it throws your way (so, SO many more maulings).
