To see a top level rider know his horse well enough, as Maher does, to GIVE his horse time off to improve her overall performance is great. You still don't STOP working a horse but you lower it down so they can tune up and relax. I love riders who know their horses so well.

I have mixed feelings about Hickstead. It's amazing to watch and I imagine it's amazing to participate but at this level equitation seems to fly out the window.

"its all about jumping which is exactly what classics should be about" yes so lets put in obscure jumps that horses will spook and be weird with. If it really was about jumping there wouldn't be random embellishments around the jumps. I think the fact that SO MANY of the horses could not get even a clear round the course indicates that the design was not a good idea. yes make things challenging but there should be a bit more success and these horse and riders were riding really well. It makes me wonder if they test the course out with ACTUAL horses and riders. Simpler is better.

It's a competition. It IS simple. If you don't feel your horse can jump the jumps, then you don't enter him. If you are going through the course and you think it's too much for your horse, then you retire him. A jumping competition isn't set up so ALL the horses can have clear rounds. That's the point of it.

I wonder if your commentator would have a better chance at pronouncing the riders / horses names if each competitor spoke their own name and the name of their horse into a recording device. I blush to hear some of this commentator's mis-pronunciations. Hickstead was a grrreat show. Many thanks. Yours in Gratitude
