The Magician's Nephew is interesting purely because it was written as a prequel, so you can see how he worked the key elements of Narnia from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe especially into the story. I always find it interesting how it's such an obvious Christian metaphor (as is a lot of the series), but it attracts so many different people because it's such a well crafted fantasy universe. Some of it has definitely aged strangely, but they're still quite good I think.

I'm a strong proponent of reading the Chronicles of Narnia in publication order because that's how i first read it. Some of the mystery and wonder of Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe if you read magician's nephew first because you're meant to be experiencing the wonders of a new world with the children. I understand that the chronological box sets started coming out shortly before I was born so I can understand that lots of kids grew up thinking it was the first book, but please don't say magician's nephew is the first without mentioning that caveat.

I'm weirdly disappointed that you consider Magician's Nephew the first book lol. I grew up with my mom's copy of the series, which was in the old original order- LWW, Prince Caspian, Dawn Treader, Silver Chair, Horse and his Boy, Magician's Nephew, Last Battle. To me, putting them in chronological order is like watching Star Wars prequels first, instead of originals first. I love backstory and world building, but I appreciate it even more when you get it after being familiar with the world. I remember finding out about the new chronological order in middle school (around age 11), and getting really curious about one specific line I remembered from my copy of LWW. The first time a character mentions Aslan, the narrator talks directly to the reader, commenting on how the kids didn't know who Aslan was any more than you did. But if you already read Magician's Nephew, you would know who Aslan was, so that line wouldn't make sense. When my friend brought his copy to school, I borrowed it to check that scene, and that line had been removed entirely!

I was VERY confused by you saying that The Magician's Nephew was the first book. It's the 6th. I had to google it to find out what was going on - apparently newer sets have re-ordered the books according to when they happen in Narnia's timeline rather than writing and publication order like previous sets. That alternate ordering might also be why the bible allegory would be clearer now than it was before (though age and context would also facilitate that).
