The Magician's Nephew is interesting purely because it was written as a prequel, so you can see how he worked the key elements of Narnia from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe especially into the story. I always find it interesting how it's such an obvious Christian metaphor (as is a lot of the series), but it attracts so many different people because it's such a well crafted fantasy universe. Some of it has definitely aged strangely, but they're still quite good I think.

I sometimes return to old early Animorphs books where Rachel's POV was featured. They still stand up very well. I've also been packing away at "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (a John Le Carre Cold War novel about British spies and their East German contacts) and a biography about Coco Chanel.

I've been doing something similar this year with series that I loved as a child! I reread the Ruby Redfort series by Lauren Child and the Secret series by Pseudonymous Bosch, and I'm now working up to things I liked as a younger teen with the Adrian Mole diaries by Sue Townsend. It's been great fun revisiting old favourites now that I am older and seeing if I still enjoy them - so far everything has gotten better with age!

Michael Morpurgo's books are so great. I was always a massive fan and got all his books as they came out. The one that hit me the most was Out of the Ashes which was set in 2001 during the foot and mouth disease crisis and growing up on a farm that thankfully escaped the disease but knowing how much we went through to prevent it and everyone who lost animals it became an obsession. I am on a reread of all my books at the moment (up to author surname (yes I'm that person) letter G) but there's loads I'm looking forward to reading - Morpurgo, Ibbotsen, Lewis!

I loved Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. I re-read both over the last few years for Anne with an E on Netflix ( which I loved, in spite of some of the major plot deviations) and for the 2020 Little Women film, which I also adored ( the 1994 version isn’t quite as good as I remembered it being). I also read a Holocaust story aged 10 or so, called The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier. It’s about a group of Polish siblings who are trying to reunite with their parents in Switzerland, I think.

The Ruby in the Smoke 💖 I picked up that book in my library as a kid and it stayed with me, hazily, in my mind. I'm a strong proponent of reading the Chronicles of Narnia in publication order because that's how i first read it. Some of the mystery and wonder of Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe if you read magician's nephew first because you're meant to be experiencing the wonders of a new world with the children. I understand that the chronological box sets started coming out shortly before I was born so I can understand that lots of kids grew up thinking it was the first book, but please don't say magician's nephew is the first without mentioning that caveat.

I don't generally re-read, or re-watch anything, I actually find having to read/watch/listen to something a second time to be emotionally painful. However, I do read children's books to get out of reading slumps. I'm weirdly disappointed that you consider Magician's Nephew the first book lol. I grew up with my mom's copy of the series, which was in the old original order- LWW, Prince Caspian, Dawn Treader, Silver Chair, Horse and his Boy, Magician's Nephew, Last Battle. To me, putting them in chronological order is like watching Star Wars prequels first, instead of originals first. I love backstory and world building, but I appreciate it even more when you get it after being familiar with the world. I remember finding out about the new chronological order in middle school (around age 11), and getting really curious about one specific line I remembered from my copy of LWW. The first time a character mentions Aslan, the narrator talks directly to the reader, commenting on how the kids didn't know who Aslan was any more than you did. But if you already read Magician's Nephew, you would know who Aslan was, so that line wouldn't make sense. When my friend brought his copy to school, I borrowed it to check that scene, and that line had been removed entirely!

I was VERY confused by you saying that The Magician's Nephew was the first book. It's the 6th. I had to google it to find out what was going on - apparently newer sets have re-ordered the books according to when they happen in Narnia's timeline rather than writing and publication order like previous sets. That alternate ordering might also be why the bible allegory would be clearer now than it was before (though age and context would also facilitate that).

Just so you know, the Narnia series as a whole is also quite racist in places (literally one of the neighboring countries people are called the "calormen").

It's such a shame that it's a part of so many works of fiction when they have the chance to create a whole new world. As Hannah said, most of the popular childhood books have white characters especially as the main ones. Hopefully this will change and get better. Looking back at books that you liked when you were little or from different times in history can be really difficult once you've become aware of things like that

I love rereading or relistening to harry potter all the time. But i kind of stopt after all the shit JK rowling did. I just dont wanna support that, at the same time i am such a fucking potterhead. I dont know how to coupe with it. I usely sepprate the art from the artist but i dont know its hard to read harry potter the same agian.
