Professor Adam Gearey, from the Department of Law at Birkbeck is joined by Dr Benjamin Gearey (Department of Archaeology, University College, Cork) and Professor Henry Chapman (Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, University of Birmingham) to discuss their recent research on bog bodies: mysterious human remains found in bogs that might provide evidence of human sacrifice in British and Irish prehistory.

All the bog bodies that in this video are stated to have been found in Germany, are in fact found in the area of Slesvig-Holsten that until recently (1864) was Danish territory. We know that the folk cultures in the whole of the old Danish area had many common traditions which were also shared with the cultures in Norway, Sweden and Frisia (northern Holland), and apart from England and Ireland it is only in these areas that bog bodies have been found. Scandinavia has been a maritime society for at least 3000 years, and copper was imported from English mines long before these Iron Age people were placed in bogs. So was it the English who exported the tradition of placing people in bogs to the mainland, perhaps via migration, or was it the other way around? Or is it just a coincidence; a parallel development? Who were the original "perpetrators"?
