A friend and I went to see Rambo: First Blood 2 in 1985 in the theatre. To this day, I have never seen an audience get into a movie so much. There were people standing on their seats and shouting. The part where Rambo says "Murdock, I'm coming to get YOU!" set everyone off yelling "YYEEAHHHH!!!! WOOOHOOOO" . It was magical. Everyone walked out pumped up. It was an amazing experience that I never repeated in any movie i've seen since.

You might already know by now, but this was a sequel, not a prequel. The events occur 3 years after the events of the first one. That's why he was in prison in the beginning. Samantha asked about the budgets for 1 and 2. First Blood (1982) had a $15 Million budget and made $125.2 Million in the box office. Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) had a $25.5 Million budget and made $300.4 Million in the box office. Rambo III (1988) was in a much higher range of a $58-$63 Million budget but made $189 Million in the box office.

27:40 That statement by Rambo was tear-jerking. I was in the USAF when this came out. My brother went to Nam. I'm old enough to remember when those who served in that war came back and were treated terribly. They were accused of killing innocent people. They were called baby-killers and spat on. I'd heard that, when Rambo said that, there were VN vets in the audience who broke out crying.

Unexpectedly, First Blood went from a one-shot film based on a novel to being another huge franchise with Stallone on top. That 1st installment was and always would be the most psychological of Rambo's arc. For writing part 2, Stallone on one side made sure that the character remained flawed. Cameron on the other side added the more visceral mode of Rambo's skill. One of the first Rated-R movies to put out toys, video games, lunch boxes, bookbags, etc. Followed by Rocky IV in the same year. Remarkable time for Sly as actor/filmmaker.

The zoom in on the chicken was for the benefit of the fans who read the book first. The book was outstanding by the way. Yeah, and the Chinese funded the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. China even tried to invade northern Vietnam to stop the Vietnamese from crushing the Khmer Rouge and saving the rest of Cambodia. Non-Khmer Rouge Cambodians fought with the Americans, Laotians and South Vietnamese against the Viet Cong and Russia. What a messed up thing the three stronger powers did to all the people of that region. Of course it was all the Frenchies fault in the first place.

The whole premise of the movie is believable, and makes sense that you would want to confirm the presence of POW's and not just go in blasting everything to get them out. As a former Green Beret, John Rambo would certainly understand the difference between a Recon Mission and an Extraction/Rescue. Seems like many people who watch this movie don't understand that and feel Rambo should have attacked all the camp guards and freed the POW's right away. That would be extremely difficult since many of them require medical attention, and trying to move back to the extraction point would compromise the mission if he had to shepherd a bunch of injured/sick prisoners.

They became a formidable symbol in the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-1989), where they were extensively used. Many think about Rambo and say ohh its just a dumb muscular idiot shooting and deytroying everyone and everything. But through all this movies he never wants to fight, he is just dragged into it by others. He is a man with few words, but he act instead and always wants to keep the innocents save. This is what Rambo stands for me, a real movie hero!

Cameron got the job to write this the same week that he got the job to write Aliens. It was all based off the strength of the script for The Terminator (which hadn’t actually gone into production yet). I think in Cameron’s bio “The Futurist”, he talked about being unhappy with Stalone’s re-write of this script.

The original script can be found on the internet. It's a good read, definitely better than the revised version used for the movie.

The Soviets were big on FAE (Fuel/Air Explosive) bombs which can cover a fairly large area. Their attack helos can drop them almost as well as their planes can. It's amusing to see that the Soviets were using a UH-1 Huey (the one Rambo took over). The massive chase helo was an Aerospecial Puma that was cosmetically modified to look like a (fattened up) MI-24 Hind attack helo.

This movie was released when Reagan was president. There was a minor scandal back then when Reagan quipped about the Middle East crisis that "I saw Rambo last night and next time I'll know what to do" I actually heavily recommend the last Rambo movie released not that long ago, it has the action and the emotions in spades.

There’s 2500 possible prisoners. If a lone guy starts to rescue a few, the enemies will change up how they do it, maybe just liquidate the rest. If you want to get most of them, he can’t start rescuing anybody until it’s time to do them all.

Another fun fact the part where he grabs the machine gun off the side of the helicopter and starts shooting at the Russians is what they used for the cover of the Rambo NES game

Nowadays, the general public has forgotten or never heard of the issue of unaccounted for P.O.W. and M.I.A. in Vietnam, but the P.O.W./M.I.A. flag still flies just below the stars and stripes over government facilities like the Veterans Administration Medical Center and the post office. Back in the 80s, fears that the government, in its haste to wash its hands of the disastrously unpopular war, had abandoned service men to rot in communist Vietnamese prisons was something most people had at least heard of, and movies like "Rambo," "Uncommon Valor," "M.I.A." and TV shows with main characters who were supposed to be Nam vets plugged into that shared cultural knowledge. The U.S. government's official position that the all the Americans unaccounted in Vietnam died there and that their remains were destroyed by the widespread use of explosives and incendiaries during the war has been accepted and has declared the case closed. Interestingly, there was a book about the C.I.A.'s secret operations in Laos and Cambodia that pointed out that soldiers who fought for the U.S. were indeed left behind to rot in communist prisons. However, rather than American citizens, these soldiers were from the indigenous ethnic minorities recruited, trained, funded and equipped by the C.I.A. who were promised that, if they helped the U.S., that the U.S. would help them get more equitable treatment.

Anyone else think Rambo purposely got caught up on the airplane so he could cut away his gear, go undetected, and possibly avoid a trap by purposely missing the landing zone?

This is the movie where the character Rambo was really born and became a houssehold name. The first movie didn't have the name in the title until later. Like Raiders of the Lost Ark didn't have Indiana Jones in the title until later.

The best about this movie is the score, and I consider the score by Jerry Goldsmith one of his best (among a plethora of great scores). It's not very deep or meaningful, but it's not meant to be. Just extreme, raw, direct emotion, and Jerry delivers. One of the scores where he's not holding back.

This is kind of the iconic Rambo film. The one people think of when they think of "Rambo". My actual favorite might be the 4th one though, shot in 2008, of an old worn down Rambo just living out his life until called back for one more fight. It had more depth than either 2 or 3, and restored that melancholy to the character. Funny for a name that gets associated with high kill count mindless action.
