This is an instructional video on how to wax your Barbour jacket. It's also the story behind how Lark got started with Barbour, which is actually very meaningful.

Incredible short film. I find that the hand lit stove lends a sentimental glory to the wax shack. The man, a forlorn figure reflecting upon the Canadian landscape, considering the wood of his youth, finds diminutive difference between religion and Barbour coats. The act of re-waxing such an article bring a man closer to the divine than any other human.

What a lovely house right at the beginning. That long bench seat is perfect for biguns and littluns alike. I have a mate who is the best fly fisherman I know. He lives in his Barbour jacket most of the winter and gets a superb, even finish whenever he waxes it. Classy little video, thanks for posting.

Awesome video. I understand your passion and being English appreciate your comments. I went up to Barbour for the 1st time ever on Wednesday as I had promised my loved one a Barbour for Xmas. It was her 40th on Wednesday so it made sense to drive the 6 hour round trip. I took my 1991 Barbour Durham there for assessment. They were amazed at how new the lining looked. Funny, since it has sat outside for the last 18+ years. I have just scrubbed it down now and am about to reproof. It needs about £50 worth of repairs if I want to go that far but I like the used individual look of it. I will send it up to Barbour to have certain repairs down by them but fancy getting a needle and cotton out and giving it some TLC myself where my skills allow. I bought a pair of lovely Barbour X Joseph Cheaney Rockingham Boots and a Uist full length jacket when I was there too. Both will last me for the remainder of my life and at 45 years old, I hope I have a few years ahead of me still.

As far as I know all Barbour wax jackets are made in UK. Only fabrics like shirts and pullovers etc are made in Turkey and (hopefully not) the far east. They are pretty expensive so normally no need for made in "Asia"...

Nice house! shame it's not in the UK! I have a full length stockman's coat with the caped top for horse riding and walking the dog, had it for about 25 years and only just thinking of re waxing it, few tears in the fabric here and there but I wouldn't wear anything else for country wear, being thorn proof is a big priority. I have had the shorter barbour coats in the past and also the barbour waxed hats, also essential for British rain fall. The full length coat is a Backhouse from New Zealand, cost me over £100 25 year ago, wonder how much they are now.
@jcbairmaster7310 жыл бұрын
Put your jacket on an ironing board,outside facing you,use a piece of bathroom sponge,dip into the wax and rub the jacket all over,seams,pockets and sites of wear in particular,cover the jacket fully.Put on a coathanger,and using a warm hairdryer,pass it over the coat gently to even out the wax where needed.you are done.And this works fine,I used to do it loads,every winter when hunting.

^ what this guy said. I second this comment as I do the exact same process too.

I think that you could also use Nikwax cotton proof spray on wax emulsion instead to reproof a cotton wax jacket. Or even use neutral coloured boot wax which has parrafin added to make it soft and spreadable at room temperature and then go over that with a hair drier. Or something like Greenland wax.

Last night I was walking past a skip (dumpster) and saw a jacket on top which had been thrown because it was 'a bit muddy', I put it through the washing machine and it looks fine but needed rewaxing anyway. You can machine wash them so long as they are thoroughly rinsed.
@controversialization679910 жыл бұрын
If you wash machined a barbour wax or any wax jacket you have permanently damaged the jacket to the point it's no longer going to maintain any wax you add. To speed up comment you've f***ed that jacket right up doing that. Put in back in skip you found it lol
@PrinceWesterburg10 жыл бұрын
controversialization Your user name says it all - well, I rewaxed it and its find, totally waterproof. I guess I don't listen to bullshit from people selling jackets! :o)
@controversialization679910 жыл бұрын
Prince Westerburg I don't sell jackets, I invest in them. Well you proved me wrong because most waxed jacket such as barbour would of been permanently damage from the process you have mentioned above. You sir are a lucky guy. Can I ask did you put it on a cold wash when doing this?
@PrinceWesterburg10 жыл бұрын
controversialization I don't use 'biological' detergent per se as its an irritant and I only use small amounts. About 20 years ago some researchers developed a fluid that dissolved wax, its actually quite difficult. I think that was used in industry and for ear drops. So, essentially soap cannot dissolve wax however the hot water will lift it out. My house has no hot water at the moment so maybe I got lucky? Certainly the jacket is fine and very waterproof. I honestly cannot see how Barbour can back up that claim unless they mean people washing a jacket in frothing suds and leaving it to just dry without rinsing. It *might* affect the way the wax gets reabsorbed into the fibres or, like the way saltpeter is put in nylon so clothes fall apart and you have to buy new ones, if could be that soap adds microscopic points where water can be absorbed thus impeding the topology of the fabric. I don't know, not my area! :o)

waxed-cotton jackets are a true piece of tradition to wear, AND a waxed cotton garment is far better for the environment than the new outdoor products of nylon, which have lots of very dangerous chemicals!!!! This fact really DOES NOT fit with the idea of pristine nature, the outdoor equipment industry should seriously think about it. I got back to old canvas surplus bags... they are a better option, and carry a lot of history too less is more, simple is beautiful

iReturnV1deotapes Check out the new Lightweight Gamefair jacket. I just got mine from Orvis today and it's a perfect balance between lightweight 3-season comfort and durable waterproof defense against the elements. (It is cut pretty trim for a Barbour with high armholes and slim sleeves. Size up to allow for a medium or heavy sweater underneath.)
@fifthbusiness16787 жыл бұрын
iReturnV1deotapes "Rains on a routine basis" is right, my friend! If you don't like the were stuff, or having to turn the lights on in your house from the morning hours on from mid- October to May because of the dark days, then you might want to consider another locale?

I thought my jacket would of come waxed. Considering I brought it brand new from barbour online. So is that as water resistant as it gets or do I need to wax it myself?
