One thing a lot of folks tend to forget is that Subaru doesn't have the pass to go into the grave anymore, so he's being rejected. Like after Patrasche had pulled him out, and he tried to walk back in but started puking. He's going through that constantly during the entire conversation. - Man, lucky he didn't throw up during the kiss, that'd probably have ruined the mood. Considering what he was doing that night, he probably already puked his stomach empty by morning.

That conversation between Subaru and Emilia is just so... messy. It's so raw and imperfect on both sides, yet I think I would much rather have had this in this story at this time for these characters than a perfectly clean and smooth confession scene.

28:05 I don't think it was mentioned before, but the answer for your question is really simple! Studio bought the time for commercials for every episode and instead of playing them, they decided to prolong the episodes. That's why most Re:Zero episodes are longar than the rest of the anime. They as well cut most of the openings and endings (they play only in some special episodes). We will have to see how it looks in Season 3!

I remember the author said specifically that Felt's blessing is not the Divine Protection of Wind. You would think she can manipulate wind if that's the case but it seems to mainly improve her mobility. The other wind related blessing we've seen is the one given to ground dragons (wind evasion I think?). Also, Garfiel's blessing is the DP of Earth Spirits. I don't think we've seen DP of Earth yet in the LN. I like to think Tappei is saving each elements's DP for some reason in the future. I think Felix has the DP of Water, though.

Subaru and Otto's relationship adds so much to both characters. You can tell that Otto has seen something in Subaru, I like to think it's the realization that an ordinary man can step up and accomplish great things if he has the resolve, which has inspired Otto to be more bold himself. And in turn, Subaru is learning from Otto how to be a good friend, how to trust someone else and rely on them.

we start with Garfiel's character display of arrogance, having completely ignored Otto's capabilities & existence as he focused on Subaru alone, In turn, it also shows us Otto's resourceful side as he buys time-& his lack human friends explains his actions in EP32 I appreciate about this matchup is that Otto, physically, is beyond weak & on the level of Subaru. Only through his wits and his blessing of communication is he able to do anything against Garfiel's brute force. The audio direction in this epsiode was stellar, drowning out the concern of his parents-but what I love most is the concept of Otto's character.(The audio team literally carried by season 2 ) Specifically, him being disabled-coded, with late-blooming communication skills resulting in his inability to form human relationships. The disability is represented via the concept of Divine Blessings. Otto's struggle was a lonely one, which no one could hope to understand. Perhaps that's why he was so willing to believe Subaru that easily, because he knows what that kind of personal hell is like. One thing I'd like to draw attention to is that Otto, right up until he gives his parents that note, shows no emotions, largely having the same expression. Only after he gives that "Thank you for everything" note to his parents does that change, crying for the 1st time, having finally been able to communicate with someone else. For Otto, communication is everything- hence why he punched Subaru to his senses with such vigor in EP38. The adult otto sequence in hometown tells us is Otto's craving for warmth & a partner through the visuals, him being a stickler for honesty, & a Blessing-specific insult triggering him to the point of doing the unreasonable. Otto finding confidence in himself, not only moving forward despite his Divine Blessing's drawbacks but also making use of it in the scenes to come, is very uplifting. And thus comes Subaru's significance for Otto. Needless to say, somebody actually SAVING him means the world to someone in Otto's shoes. But more than that, the near-death experience made him realize his gratefulness for simply *being alive*, & for the one who granted him that, so in a sense, Subaru made Otto appreciate his own life, which motivates Otto throughout Arc 4. What I said earlier about Otto understanding Subaru's struggle is evidenced by these momentary flashes Otto has in his mind, of Subaru and his own childhood. The narration or Otto himself don't tell us anything, because they don't HAVE to-the idea is perfectly conveyed visually. It was cool to see an outside perspective of Subaru (beyond Emilia or Rem's POV). This thread was originally written by Jaereku on X. 31:18 and 32:20 it was supposed to be used to more but anime cut it

To clear up about how they make such long episodes. Basically WhiteFox studio was given a few episodes to adapt arc 4(season 2). Arc 4 is episode 2-25 of Season 2. That is not enough time to adapt arc 4 properly. But them being the gigachads they are BOUGHT ad slots so that they could use the entire episode timeslot. They literally lost money broadcasting S2. This is also why there won't be a directors cut of S2 since S1 director cut they needed to broadcast it. However they still made a lot of money because of the success of S2. 2 years after it's release, Kadokawa(the publishing company) reported they lost 33% in revenue when a year after S2 due to as they said "a lack of Re Zero anime project". Kadokawa has multiple studios working for them and even has Mushoko Tensei and many other successful shows

Man kind of annoyed at this misinformation whitefox didn't buy ad slots it was the production committee. If anything Whitefox did very poor job with season 2 production i mean just look at the vast difference in production quality b/w s1 and s2, even ignoring the visuals and animations, the direction itself is so rushed. what's the point of extra 2 mins when the cuts are still bad and the time management is bad did we really need the entire ep 17 for Emilia's wholesomeness 15 was enough they could have used 15 to save and get us the much more needed cut content and dialogues when biggest issue with s2 anime adaptation is how much confused viewer feels and its for a reason its because of cuts and rushed scenes.

In the novels Otto's backstory was intended to show another feature of his childhood/blessing, which is that because of all the years spent not understanding language his social skills were left behind by the way. He's genuinely extremely good fantasy autistic savant representation, auditory processing issues can lead to the same gap in developing skills and his blessing (which canonically drives most holders of it mad because almost anything can be perceived as a language, they not only have to navigate other languages but from species with very inhuman perspectives as well, even with Otto you see this as he heard the white whale chasing him and Subaru to kill them and it was breaking him in season 1 episode 17) strengthens his brainpower for learning languages. So it kind of makes him a genius instead of being like autotranslate, but Otto is also just very smart in general once he started understanding the people around him. His emotional and social development were left behind as he caught up with ten years' worth of education. So that's what him calling the zodda bugs and finding out that girl's love life through spying highlighted. He's not a bad guy at all! But he didn't really understand that other people will be so horrified by the bugs(I don't think they're unfriendly and whether they ate everything etc was unclear, but there's probably a good reason to hate it apart from just, many bugs) and it's fair to say there are better ways of resolving a problem with an ex accusing you of sleeping with his girlfriend than spying on her and revealing her sleeping around to said guy. That was also a little revenge driven, Otto isn't without his anger or grudges after all. Most of the characters even very good ones are intentionally flawed with their mistakes. But it's handled so well and not edgy at all(like, mistakes of good guys aren't generally murder, contributing to slavery, sexual abuse etc, and the times a character DOES make those mistakes have had plenty of karma without it ever breaking that this world isn't really on the side of good at all). I find it beautiful and wholesome. This isn't really spoilers because I'm giving zero context here to a side story, but I say that about Otto being a little flawed here because later on events in a very general way lead to him apologising to that girl because Petra insists on it. I saw people hating Petra for that but it's a reasonable event, it's not saying the girl isn't horrible for sending assassins at the time, just that in Petra's childish perspective Otto still shouldn't have gone around learning who some girl had relationships/sex with even in a context without it being THAT BAD. Plus Petra has a sort of originally spoiled girl getting away with stuff who learned to be nicer background to her which makes being overly sympathetic to a rich noble/merchant woman make sense.

This fact alone made me put my trust into the amazing and passionate talent working on the anime adaptation! Emilia is failing to do what she has to, and is in too much pressure because she is failing continuously, and feels worse because someone who loves her and has expectations for her succeeding is still giving her full support and she want's him to give up on her.... and that's exactly Subaru's position in the real world with his parents, The same expecations that almost destroyed his life and same would have happened again if accepted echidna' contract living though lens and expectations of others. Her self-worth is in shambles, and the kindness & understanding shown to her by Subaru & Puck come off as unreasonable & scary. Emilia, left alone by both Puck & Subaru against the memories slowly flooding her, isolates herself at the Tomb. She desperately wants to lean on someone (recall EP36), but has no one for it.(Great of anna to bring it up in the end), from this point on, is all about getting Subaru's feelings through, re-establishing a healthy communication, & not have her rely on anyone. Her self-worth is in shambles, and the kindness & understanding shown to her by Subaru & Puck come off as unreasonable & scary,This is also an opportunity for Subaru, for the first time ever, to vent out his not-so-positive feelings towards Emilia, as he lays his entire heart bare. That's a new side of Subaru, and it's been a long time coming. However, even with all that said and done, he finishes it with "I love you". Because the idea here is that love, and thus believing in someone, needs no justification like how Emilia thinks. All the flaws & strengths he spoke of don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Take note of Subaru's words here - his growth is notable, and this conversation feels like a continuation of their quarrel in S1 Episode 13, in a way, Subaru accepts all of her weaknesses & offers to walk by her side, without doing everything for her (like by taking the Trials. To Emilia, Subaru's genuine love for her feels like his suffocating idealization of Arc 3, as she refuses to believe him and take his words at face value. "Don't talk like I'm just some doll!" especially cuts deep. But it is precisely because he doesn't see Emilia as "just some doll" (anymore) that he left her side (among other reasons), not letting her entrust him with everything. Finally, the end touches upon the other main source of her struggles-the fear of how she'll turn out after regaining all of her memories, and whether she'll still be herself. If the point of origin is wrong, doesn't that make the path walked and the destination all wrong as well? Here comes into play Subaru's "homework". It doesn't matter where Emilia comes from, or how her experiences shaped her. It won't erase the path she's walked until now, won't change his thoughts on her, & no one can decide her path up until now has been wrong until the very end.(Which ben brings up) The last scene's uplifting brightness is a clear, deliberate contrast with their grim first kiss in Taste of Death. "It was not not like the first time, which carried the cold taste of death. The second kiss... bore the hot taste of life." In the end, Subaru proves his point through actions rather than words. Upon reaching a mutual understanding, what had initially been just her reflected in Subaru's eyes becomes reciprocated (the eye reflection shots being a motif within pivotal moments of SubaEmi's relationship). Yes above thread was shamelessely stolen by i just wanted to post here :D To this day this episode is very misunderstood even more than ep 18 S1, and judging by some comments here even more so. Both this episode and from zero ep 18 are not ROMANTIC ones and not the point of it,Yes romance is used as a tool to get to the point, but that's not the focus or main point actual romance hasn't even happened in the show so far(Read side stories for kino romance) its in the title of both the epsiodes what they are about "From Zero" and " A Reason to believe" i will make a separate post about otto part as well. Personally i was very disappointed with Adaptation of this episode or just the whole S2 Part 2 in general but i am glad the main messaging got through you guys, it was supposed to be 2 teenagers having a messy conversation because that's how it is.. my disappointment really comes just the huge downgrade in visual quality the static shots, very rushed direction , the butchering of fights b/w ram otto vs garfiel..etc,But this is what happens when you have to animate 13 ep in 3 months with 1/3 staff of season 1 with covid pandemic at its peak...its management's fault as always, its nice to buy extra ad slots but what's the point if quality isn't there see i am not expecting freiren/MT s1 level of quality but something on the level of S1 would have been fine.

this could be reading too much into it but at this point he's already seen Emilia go crazy because of relying on him and suffering the trials, and he knows that that's not the Emilia he loves. During his conversation with Roswaal they were saying that Roswaal forces weakness upon his beloved, and Subaru forces strength. In this case, he needed Emilia to face the trial and succeed, and that means he needs the confident, daring Emilia that only came through as a result of this episode's conversation. Not to say it was all planned out by him in detail but he couldn't let the status quo from the night before continue. Either that or he just derp but I doubt Teppei would do that.

Because that was literally the only time Subaru could go and do that. He knew he wouldn’t be able to be there for Emilia because the plan him and Otto made involved him going to the mansion. Meaning he wouldn’t be there for a majority of Emilias trials. Since he couldn’t, this was just an extra precaution to help Emilias mental state when he left. He already knew leaving a letter isnt reliable, so he had to do it like this. He could have told her, but I guess he wanted to be a surprise since it would make Emilia much happier. He never intended for Emilia to wake up, the plan was for him to be there every waking moment with her before the trial to ensure he could prepare her. The only time he could leave her was when she slept. He obviously had to promise Emilia he would stay even tho he knew he had to do this. Subaru had no clue how hard the trial be wouldnt be there for would be. Also, it had the unintended effect of being a positive thing for Emilia. We would had seen her multiple times rely on Subaru in a completely unhealthy way. That was the entire point of his hell loop where she loved him, she basically moves her over reliance on Puck to Subaru. Puck is a shitty father, he basically was too protective and sheltered Emilia to an unhealthy degree. And could that with her going through a really shitty situation, it makes sense why she would rely on Subaru when hes the only person she can truly trust here. The other thing it showed Emilia was about promises and her idea of them. Emilia is way too stubborn about promises, thinking theres only one way to keep them. Even tho Subaru is shitty at keeping promises, he showed Emilia a different perspective that breaking a promise isnt always a bad thing. Subaru did something so sweet for her, and despite not being there for her that night, he was with her for the majority of the trials. When she would REALLY need the support. So it all makes sense, it was pretty much an accident, Subaru wasn’t intentionally trying to teach Emilia those extra lessons. It just happened to work out better than expected

17:21 Emilia really pulled the old classic: "If I became a chair, would you still love me?" That discussion between Subaru and Emilia was so weirdly off-topic. Honestly, if Subaru was just more direct, addressing the matter at hand instead of all this (mostly) irrelevant talk about love... Okay, he made a promise to Emilia too lightly, but when he saw how much it mattered to her, he could have just said so. Could have said: "Look, something came up and I had to leave. I didn't realize that staying by your side while you slept was so important, but on the other hand there was a life or death situation! Should I have woken you up before leaving?" and see where it goes from here.

They needed to talk. Multiple things they needed to address and basically put their feelings on the table as they weren't really communicating well and needed to get it out of their systems. As well as discuss the problems Emilia was facing so just brushing it aside won't do any good. Especially since promises are something that absolutely don't break lightly at all and even if for a good reason he still broke it. And that alone is enough to wound Emilia

@@bryangarcia5207 Uh, yeah, they did need to talk, I never implied they didn't so I don't know where you got that idea from. You're saying they weren't communicating well in the past, I'm saying a good chunk of this convo was *still* bad communication. And YES, they needed to discuss Emilia's problems. Again I don't know where you got the idea that I wanted anything brushed aside when I said the opposite: "address the matter at hand". It is exactly why I'm saying Subaru needs to be more direct, be on topic and RECEPTFUL. Instead of addressing why he left and broke his promise, he's deviating off-topic! He can talk about his feelings *after* addressing the matter at hand, after hearing Emilia's point of view and figuring out her issue(s), why it was such a big deal to her and telling her his point of view and his reasoning, so she can understand him. That would have been good communication. They still had some, but it was still mostly bad. Even the good was laborious.

I wouldn’t call the topic of the talk “mostly irrelevant”, since it was all about addressing Emilia’s idea that the reason no one was getting angry at her was because they had no expectations of her and hated her ass. The talk itself was definitely messy though, that’s true; it was pretty much just two kids yelling at each other, running almost entirely on emotion. I must add that mentioning any life or death situation would be counterintuitive to Subaru and Otto’s plan, because they’re deliberately keeping Emilia in the dark about everything that isn’t strictly related to the trials, otherwise it would be putting too much pressure on her while she’s already at her lowest.

having watched the series several times now, this episode it explained a lot about how Emilia acts and whats going on inside her head, but I still am heavily critical of her for a lot of the pain she's caused Subaru. What everyone forgets about ReZero is that every single character is screwed up in some massively bad way and Emilia is just as badly messed up, she doubts every single person around her as she doesn't believe in herself, her lines here where she thinks that Subaru's a liar for not remaining by her bedside all night is incredibly childish - and it's explained why shortly - but that unfortunate situation she's in doesn't stop me from being critical of her. Just like I can be critical of Subaru for being so unfathomably stupid as to think that people don't like him when they're willing to die for his sake, he's seen two people do that and countless fight for his sake because they care for him but he still thinks that because of how messed up his head is. I can sympathise with Subaru for that messed up head, but I can still be critical of him for it and when he messes up due to that bad thought process. Ultimately Emilia here is incredibly tragic, terrified of losing people around her because she is convinced of how horrible she is as a person because of the things in Frozen Bonds and what comes in her memory, blaming herself for things that aren't her fault and being guilt ridden for seeing people she cares about suffer, but still not realising that same problem Subaru had in that people aren't going to suffer for a person they don't care about. And for that she's an idiot. Cannot wait to see your reaction to the Beako scenes because those broke me completely.

I think another thing that partially explains why Emilia's personality is how it is, is that she got frozen while she was still a child and when she woke up she was still fairly young, had no adult influences anymore, lost her memories and everyone except puck feared and hated her. I actually don't think that it is that childish that she was mad at Subare for not staying at her bed. Subaru has lied before and this is already the second time he broke his promise to Emilia, and promises to her are really important. I would be pissed too if a guy who said that he loves me only a month ago (not sure how much time passed exactly since s1 ep 1) after I have met him for the first time would constantly lie and break his promises.

@@DragaXZ yeah that's pretty much what I was getting at, particularly that she still has much of a child's mind outside of her years with Puck, she hasn't "grown up" yet and has child-like views of things like promises. the thing about Subaru not being there is hard for anyone who hasn't tried or stayed by a family member's side for a whole night when they're sleeping, sick or dying. It's hard to do, your bladder will want to empty on the tiniest of things as you're colder and getting more tired. We know why Subaru was away, but let's just say he stepped away for the toilet the moment she woke up, her reaction to instantly thinking he'd disappeared is childish - she does the immediate reaction on the LN's too so it's not anime dramatism - Emilia is just a kid reacting in a kids way to the world. Emilia fans tend to try and defend her regardless of what happens and it's a detriment to the character as you're meant to find part of her actions annoying, her constant belief of thinking that Subaru doesn't care and actually hates her has been there since episode 1 and it took to the end of season 2 for that to be proven to her, that's exasperating and you should be critical of her. Just like you should be critical of Subaru, of Rem, of Ram, of Beako, of Roswaal, of Garf, not so much Otto, Petra and Frederica as they've not shown anything like the doubts that the others have. The story of ReZero is the people with problems getting better and helping each other overcome them. When we get to season 3 and the problems that plague the Astria family it's going to be epic levels

@@UncensoredScionthe point wasn't that she was angry at Subaru though??? Like getting angry at her for arguing here is the same as getting angry at Subaru for shouting at Rem in episode 18. Her entire argument is showing her feelings about herself... Spoilers season 2 Because SHE DOESN'T KNOW. She doesn't know she kept her promise. She knows or assumes and has been blamed for freezing Elior forest and the elves. She knows she's hated and believes she deserves it. She was left remembering about her feelings about breaking promises. But she has no context for those memories and feelings! Why do you think she was so relieved when she actually saw her past for the first time? It's because she didn't break her promise, she didn't let her mother down, she couldn't help what happened and in the end she wasn't hated by the elves(her false ideas in the webnovel told her in the end they hated her). SHE THOUGHT SHE BROKE A PROMISE. And thought it was her being disobedient towards them and letting them down which somehow led to everyone freezing. When she saw she didn't, it lifted all of those fears from her and left only a child doing her best instead of one who all of the people around her treated as the cause of their suffering. She shouts at Subaru for breaking his promise, Puck for his, Fortuna for leaving, because she blames herself and truly thinks promises are important because as a child she broke one and ended up causing so much suffering through her own fault. You have a massive misunderstanding of her character.

@@siginotmylastname3969 The point is that she is angry at Subaru for saying something she doesn't believe anyone will ever do, she thinks the world hates her for being Half-Elf and Subaru just saying "I love you" makes her feel like she is being lied to. ON THE FACE OF IT. But outside of that, she has seen Subaru repeatedly put himself in danger for her and still thinks he's lying. In the Rem confession episode, Rem hasn't actually shown a level of devotion to Subaru outside of episode 15 and for Subaru he doesn't see the actions of Rem as being worthy of dying for him as he thinks he's worthless, that's his mistake and Rem has to get angry at him for Subaru to realise how wrong he is about this whole thing WITH HER. Emilia has seen Subaru nearly die multiple times for her and then thinks his disappearance from her bedside is because he hates her. It's childish and silly to have that happen, just like it is silly and childish for Subaru to think Rem doesn't trust him in episode 14, Rem wants to protect Subaru because she loves him - it ends in her death and Subaru then blames himself for it which adds to his level of depression and self-loathing (didn't help that in episode 14 Rem also misspoke and that "IF" Subaru heard stuck in his head horribly) But I can be angry at Subaru for his stupid reactions just like I can for Emilia as that's the normal reaction to have when seeing people be stupid, heart goes out to them but you think "you moron!" Season 2. Yes, I know that she doesn't remember WHY she thinks promises matter and the reasons behind them, that's where the sympathy comes in. She's basically a child trying to fix a mistake that ultimately wasn't her fault but that she blames herself for. But the reality of the situation is that Subaru has shown levels of devotion and dedication to her in nearly dying to Elsa, to the Mabeasts, being beaten nearly to death for disrespecting the people who insulted her, killing the White Whale and taking a bomb away from her. And he does all that just because he loves her, there's no reason other than that. Yet she still says, "you hate me" because she's stupid and I can and will always see that as a childish silly hatred of others and a presumption that people will hate her for empty reasons. Her reaction to the promise being broken is a child's reaction to a promise being broken, and this is the ultimate break between Emilia Stans and the rest of us who are sane. Rem fan here, and her reactions to Subaru early on show how broken she is inside and how lost she was, her actions while understandable, are still horribly done and should be criticised. She had no rationality on her side when killing him in episode 6, her killing of him in episode 5 is a mercy killing but still over the top and violent because she doesn't trust anyone. These are character flaws and things that should be criticised rather than hidden. Emilia fans hide everything negative about her because you canNOT take even the tiniest little bit of criticism towards her, it's why you're sort of all crazy.
