I kinda enjoyed Season Two more. It had a lot more lore and development of central character that were pretty much just there in season 1. Not to mention it had probably the worse death Subaru ever experienced (rabbits) and this season strengthened his bonds with the characters that he'll be around the most. Season 1 was getting your feet wet in the story and Season 2 was a deep dive with character backstories, development, and lore

Same. I feel like it was much more introspective and more character driven instead of the plot moving at a breakneck pace like Season 1. Season 1 felt like multiple arcs and storylines crammed together. It was new character after new character after new character, new antagonist after new antagonist after new antagonist. Season 2 was one solid arc spanning the same characters developing the conflict much better. Much more mature than season 1 and seeing Subaru's and Emilia's romantic tension actually makes much more sense now. Where last season I was like "okay but why?".

Re:Zero for me has always been a character driven story, I think the reason Season 2 felt like it didn't progress as much as Season 1 is because not only does Season 2 adapt only 1 arc, but the arc itself focuses on character narrative way more than it does the plot, it fleshes out and develops most of the characters old and new. Also Season 2 adapted Arc 4, the author has said that he plans on making Re:Zero 11 arcs most of which after Arc 4 are going to need around 24-25 EPs (maybe more in the future), so if Re:Zero was to be fully animated, it would need around 9 seasons of 24-25 EPs or even more so we might not be seeing the end of Re:Zero until like a decade or two later.

Subaru's death does not have that much impact because it is how author wanted it to be. He wanted subaru to understand that dying again doesn't just effect him but people around him, i thinks so you just forgot ep 12 and 13 because it issues with the these things. And about nothing really happens in this season is wrong we get a lot of things like about witches, roswall, beatrice, emilia and most impprtantly the subaru's backstory and even more about everything but i also agree that season 3 is needed for season 2 be better.

Something to remember is that changes in a story are not generally abrupt and make what came before less valid, but can also be a result of progress and increase the options the story can go. Like the second half of season two of Re:Zero is a direct response of Subaru trying to hit his head against a wall and not getting ahead in the first half. That doesn't mean he doesn't ever have to "reload" anymore, but it does mean he now knows how giving his best for a "playthrough" can be better than "save scumming". And on the matter of progress, let's not forget how progress isn't just made by passing time and by things being physically done - especially not with shows like Re:Zero where things can happen independently from passing time. There is so much development in this season with so many different characters once you take a closer look at it. And that is ontop of final few episodes having major things happen physically. Every character has made so much continued progress in this season, as well as their relationships with other characters, and nobody can discredit that with saying only a few days have passed.

Ark's here starting to look like Subaru with all his worry and concern over reaching the ending lol But for real, I totally agree and do think that there are a lot of coincidences between the narrative and how people feel about the show. I felt like season one was so mystifying because it was written from a perspective that we actually truly couldn't understand. The one false ending with the manor in a blizzard only for it to cut to the return by death point is the key there. Subaru's character has gone beyond what can be conveyed in a normal narrative form so they have to convey it through tricks of composition to explain. Season one was so focused on Subaru because that was the only perspective that actually mattered. Now that he's gained support and it's not just him helming his efforts, the perspective switches back and forth and I think that's where people get uninterested. We don't have much if any time with many of these new characters to add weight to the storyline, even with Emilia. So when I look at it as them having seriously well developed like 6 or 7 now main characters with their own perspectives over really just Subaru and Rem last season, I actually think it was a flying success. So I think the funny thing to take away here is that it wasn't just Subaru who 'bet it all on one loop', the writer themself bet a lot on this bridge arc to switch off a weakening plot about one dude's suffering into a more fleshed out dynamic story. I called it a coincidence but I'm really starting to suspect the writer and/or the director are just fucking genius at this point to have such meta control over their work. And with the last bit about Emilia meeting with Subaru in the ending, I'm sure there is 100% intent to keep going. Imma trust my boi Subaru and White Fox.

Subaru seems to go on a suck-all-witchfactors-adventure so he'll likely collect all the factors in the end. We also have the voices in Emilia's 3:rd trial. Based on all of these info, I think that the endgame will play out like this: Subaru collects all w-factors, gets hijacked by probably Flugel or someone else, witches reunite, final battle against probably Pandora or/and the dragon, Frederica sacrifice herself, Garf kills possessed Subaru (probably after collecting Vainglory-factor) ending the cycle of the factors and RBD, Subaru is in afterlife with Satella, the end.

I'd honestly take a delayed season 3 to make sure White Fox gets the time bring the passion they brought to these last 2 seasons over them either rushing out the next and potentially having to change studios like what happened owen AoT and Witt. The novels are currently in arc 7 if 11 so a season every 1 1/2 years or so may suck to wait for but may be best for quality reasons and making sure we never get stuck waiting for more source material.

Disappointing? Ummm what. Note: I am trying to be very brief to avoid spoilers. After finishing the full video, I cannot agree with this perspective. This season further fleshed out the "Emilia Party", provided a lot of world building, and gave their camp another notable achievement. Emilia - Her past, getting over it, and becoming an actually good character. Subaru - Reflecting on the real world. Realizing he needs to rely on others outside of himself. Beatrice - Learning her back story and freeing her. Roswaal - His motives Ram - Her motives Introduces new characters to the Emilia party as well as gives us a chance to experience all 9 of the witches. I think calling this a bridge season is disingenuous almost like a framing device that is minimizing its achievements. By the explaination provided, one can easily argue everything that falls between the first and last seasons of a show are bridge seasons.

Not to mention Subaru finally legitimately becoming Emilia's proper knight after having worked really hard to _earn_ that. Like... It's really weird that not one of these amazing things was mentioned but instead you seem to just dwell on "welp not enough time travel". And do you honestly think with the amount of love that the people at White Fox have poured into this stuff, that they really want to just torch the thing in the ending? Remember, we have had BONUS LENGTH every. single. episode. Most of them without an opening or ending sequence. With _so much effort_ put into it. Like how is this even remotely comparable to the promised neverland?

I personally loved Season 2 about the same as Season 1. While Arkada's worries are valid, there is still a lot of passion and genuinely good intelligent writing and with a lot of source material that is great, from what I've heard, I doubt that they will go anime original and mess everything up.

3:30 Not only that, the simple act of returning increases his witch scent, which naturally changes the perceptions of those who might have been friendly to him in previous attempts. See: Season 1, Rem it seems, having not read the source material, you are unaware of something. Season 1 is an adaptation of 3 arcs of material. Season 2 is only a single arch. That explains the "lack of progress" you feel in the 2nd season. However IIRC the 4th arch is as large, or close to as large as two previous arcs. It IS a huge info dump, and a chance for the side characters to develop.
@Demedich1
@Demedich1 3 жыл бұрын
Light Novel wise the first 3 arc are 9 novels. Arc 4 is 6 novels, Arc 5 is 5 novels, and Arc 6 is 5 novels. The first season also cut a lot of small scenes that did world building and fleshed out some of the side characters. Considering the merch sales is usually a good indicator of a possible sequel RE: Zero has been one of the highest selling franchises in terms of it in Japan. The source material is also extreamly popular so a season 3 seem fairly likely. We'll likely find out at the next Kadokawa presser in June but I wouldn't expect season 3 to be airing until at least summer 2022. Honestly though I dont mind the extra weight so long as White Fox is allowed the extra time to put as much passion as they have in the previous seasons in the next one. Fun fact: the first draft of arc 4 in the web novel (available for free online) is 4 times longer than the entire lord of the rings series. There is a lot of random world building and some loops that were cut out from the light novel and now anime.

It's concerning that people have a nitpick on Subaru not using RBD 'wisely' and more 'masterfully' when in fact that the last Witch's Tea Party specifically indicated that he promised one of them not to die for naught. Speaking of not dying for naught, Season 2 is better seen as a arc 4 story and not rely too much on the potential of Season 3 because if what you say about S2 that you don't like is true, then you're probably gonna have a weird time in S3 (Arc 5). TL;DR: RBD is definitely not a shock value asset anymore but better

as someone who read the source material for Arc 4 (aka S2), I can say that a lot of the problems were mostly from the struggle of adapting such a huge, masterful piece of work into a 25-episode season. the "info-dumpy" feel of the second season was not really present in the Web Novel, because the vast amount of chapters and words Arc 4 contained were enough to pad it and truly make it feel like it was an unraveling mystery, while still leaving you with lingering questions to be answered later (and I will add, the author is amazing at foreshadowing and hinting towards plot developments, details, and answers without just straight-up giving you the answer, which I think is something that sadly got a little lost in the adaptation). In addition, again, with all of the words and things in between, the deaths had a more gradual build-up (plus a few cut deaths/deaths that had extra content that was changed), and didn't feel quite as predictable. that's not to say that your opinions on Season 2 are invalid, as the adaptation of the source material is also a key factor into what makes a good sequel, but considering the fact that 25 thirty minutes episodes with (usually) no OP or ED was what we got and even that wasn't enough to adapt everything important, I think they did an amazing job. plus, I will add that although RbD is a very interesting and important plot device, the story itself is not centered around it, nor was it intended to do so. the point of RbD was really to explore its characters and develop them, showing the different sides of each character as well as exploring the mental state of the protagonist and how he deals with it, both things that Season 2 continued to do. In the end, Re:Zero is a character-driven story, set in an extremely expansive world with constant mysteries to encounter and uncover. all the info Arc 4 revealed was only a small part of the puzzle. RbD will never quite take a backseat (as the author himself has stated in a Q&A that the chance of Subaru not dying in an arc was 0%), but if you're to continue watching and enjoying this series it's vital to understand that its centerpiece and goal do not revolve around RbD, but actually its characters and the mysterious, complicated world that Subaru finds himself in. Re:Zero is, in the end, a character study. it just happens to be one with an exceptional, exciting plot and a fascinating plot device.

I preferred season2 of Re:zero by quite a large margin. My biggest problem of season 1 was the lack of deep characters. Everyone (perhaps save for Subaru) was left on the surface level and I found it very hard to invest in any of the characters, giving any dramatic moment significantly less weight. Season 2 right away introduces a bunch of unique new characters that get expanded upon and make it easy to sympathize with them or they're just so god damn entertaining to watch (ahem... a certain witch) as well as giving a deeper character to some already existing, but so far kind of 1 dimensional figures (Emilia, Ram, Roswaal). Subaru "betting it all on 1 round" is a massive positive change for me, because in season1 - while obvious mental effects appeared - there was always the thought "oh, well guess he'll just die and here we go again", while in season2 I genuinely didn't know what would happen if he failed, making it that much more exciting.
@KnightElemental
@KnightElemental 3 жыл бұрын
Calling season 2 a "bridge season" feels like a massive disservice to it. Because it's not just connecting season 1 to season 3; its building upon what came before. In pretty big ways, i might add. Subaru is the biggest example. He's not just trying to ram into a problem that ends up killing him like he did in season 1; he's acting more thoughtfully. So yes, less loops are needed because he's doing more to avoid having to die. He learned to rely on his friends to help him accomplish his goals. He learned to accept himself despite his terrible personality traits. And the big rival of the season, Roswall, pushed him to be better by giving Subaru something to avoid becoming. And this is just Subaru. Not to mention how well developed Emelia, Otto, Garfiel, the witches, Beatrice, heck, even Roswall were this season. Season 1 was more action heavy, Season 2 was more cerebral, with more of an emphasis on meaningful dialogue and thinking through strategy. But it was still Re:Zero. And the fact that most of this season didn't have an OP or ED shows that the studio was committed to making a good product; they succeeded in the best way possible. Honestly, i don't see the concern for season 3 being less than stellar. A show can change its focus and still be good, or even great. That's how i view Season 2. It wasn't a carbon copy of season 1. But what it achieved still furthered the narrative, characters, and themes in pretty satisfying ways.

I loved both seasons, but I loved season 2 more than 1. Tbh, every con you listed is a pro for me. And a big point of season 2 was how Subaru treated himself like he was worthless and it was ok for him to die over and over again just because he has return by death. Otto basically beat his ass so that Subaru would start realizing that people care about him and he doesn't need to do everything on his own and suffer from return by death. Subaru was so blinded by his ability that it made him forget that there are other ways for him to succeed and his friends want to help him with that. If he kept relying on return by death, he would probably completely lose it at some point and never come back from it. Season 1 was about overcoming his feeling that he is worthless, season 2 is about realizing that he's not alone and can rely on others, and the future seasons will probably be about him becoming the hero he is starting to become and the responsibility that comes with that.

@saifors

Season 2 to me felt like an improvement because the return by dead was used more sparsely. In season 1 they went through many loops and scenarios but ran into the problem that while it went through a lot of plot beats, they didn't feel like they had as much substance as season 2's, now we actually know things about the characters and why they matter and we have actual world building besides "medieval fantasy world". There's a Manwha that also has the MC return by death called "Skeleton Soldier Couldn't Protect the Dungeon" that runs into the same issue where when the loops are happening often a lot happens but they don't feel like they add anything to the greater narrative. I think they're a great starting premise but I prefer that overtime it takes a back seat and let the narrative rest on the shoulders of it's actual story as the goal is to "get things right" and if the character with the ability never grows to be able to get anywhere without relying on it the series will just become frustrating as the main character gets all the second chances and proceeds to not develop.

I loved all the character growth we saw for Subaru, which I would argue was much more than we got in the three arcs of season one. I do think the first half of season two was a bit weaker, I found it a bit too slow, but the payoff was more than worth it. Season two managed to make me cry, which I didn't expect at all. I love it when a story can do that, and unfortunately, it's too high a bar for many, even some of my all-time favorites, to clear. But Re:Zero season 2 did.

Also I’m pretty sure that Subaru will use Return by Death a lot more. Also remember that the original story isn’t even finished so there is some points where you need to wait for. If anything, Season 2 is practically still in the “early Re:Zero” stage since the Light Novels are currently two arcs and a half ahead of the anime, and the last Light Novel Volume for Arc 4 was released almost four years ago.

Season 2 is arguably (or really not) objectively better than season 1, given the amount of character development, twists, and the most important thing of all.. "Answers to Questions" that we've been waiting for since season 1, but I'm one of those people that personally like season 1 more, when you get such an interesting premise like Return by Death, obviously the first time will always feel the most special, and also didn't like how we spent basically all of this season in just one place, which might be my least favourite setting so far, but still, there's no denial that they stepped up the game in terms of narrative this time (and maybe even production value), Season 2 to Re:Zero is what Season 3 was to Attack on Titan, and that's a fact.

I loved season 1. I loved the re-mastered version even more. I do understand how you feel about season 2. The odd thing is, for the same reasons you listed, I consider season 2 to be slightly better than season 1. I did not really think about this until I had finished Season 2, but, in hindsight, Re:zero was in danger of becoming a one trick pony. Hit a hard problem, die and reset, repeat till you find solution, etc etc. Good example is how you felt that the loops were getting predictable. You are right, they were. What I found very impressive is how this was addressed. It began in season 1, when we clearly saw that Subaru's mind was being affected badly at the end of each loop. He was not suicidal, but, the guy was struggling. By the time he got to season 2, his mind was becoming unhinged. If it was not for Echidna we could had gone mad at one stage. And, later on, after a few more loops at the mansion, all 8 witches had to step in to keep him sane and give him a new understanding. It was clear that relaying solely on looping was sending him insane. I expect (and hope) that Return by Death will no longer be Option 1. Again, this is a good thing. Consider that some of the authorities that the archbishops have might be able to block Return by Death (if he does end up like Rem, he'd not be dead, and he'd have no way to end himself). To me at least, this made the show a lot more interesting. At the very least, less Return by Death has made the show's narrative a lot less predictable.

This show seems to be more about character development than plot, and this season highlights that. Sure, Subaru and gang only accomplish one major goal this time around, but there’s SO MUCH character development both within and between characters. Admittedly, a lot of this features info dumps, but to say that they don’t *do* much doesn’t feel like an accurate description. They do a lot - it just so happens to be within 1 loop and within only a few settings (and even then there’s a pretty decent variety if you consider the many settings of the characters’ flashbacks). The plot seems to be a bit of a slow burn at times to highlight the characters, and that’s been true even since s1. In a lot of ways, this feels like a natural evolution so we don’t get burned out on having too many quick loops a season. I’d argue that would burn us out more on the gimmick than having a slower, season-long loop as in s2.
@AugustA447
@AugustA447 3 жыл бұрын
I see a lot of comments making similar points, so I may just be another voice in the crowd, but what made Season 2 more enjoyable for me than Season 1 *was* that it did away with a lot of the fantasy gimmicks, primarily RBD. With the juggernaut that was Season 1 Episode 18, Subaru's cheap, vain character started to feel more genuine, more broken, more human. This is made even clearer in the original material by a line that was excluded about how Rem's speech didn't even save him, but mainly told him that the time for action was now, and that he could hate and loathe himself after (I'm butchering it, but that's the main point.) So, Subaru's internal conflict is still present, and taking a season devoid of OPS and EDs to explore that and how his conflict affects those around him, is a beautiful direction that takes a purely fantastical story and turns it into a relatable, human experience. By slowing down and only covering one arc this season, Re:Zero has put heart into every episode. I haven't read beyond this point in the original material, so instead I'll make a prediction: I do think RBD is going to return for Season 3; it's the show's central gimmick. However, what would intrigue me so, is, as you said, whether or not those deaths are forced, though I'm not referring to murder. I would love to see Subaru be stretched so thin, with his new promise to Satella to love himself and value his life more contrasting the more dire circumstances that said mentality can create at times. I want to see the guilt that comes from suicide and a genuine strive every time to improve from it. It would be heartbreaking, but it would lead to more improvement in his character. In a sentence, I want to see Subaru face exceptions from the world to "love himself". I have loads more to say, but neither the time nor words to articulate it, so I'll end with this: in an interview with the director shortly after Season 2's conclusion, he dropped his desire and the staff's desire/possibility of working on a Season 3. I believe it's coming, and it won't even take us 4 years this time.

There are currently 6 arcs of the story fully written and 11 arcs planned by the author. S1 adapted the first 3 arcs of the story, while S2 could only adapt arc 4 due to its sheer length, that's the main reason why it feels like not much has happened in comparison. S2 was also mainly focused on backstory and much needed character development for the Emilia camp, so it does feel like an info dump at times. The inevitable S3 however(it's a matter of when, not if) will definitely have a bigger action focus as the viewers are reintroduced to the royal selection candidates and their knights as they all have to deal with [spoilers].

I still loved season 2, but I always wondered why it didn't hit me as much as it did when I watched Season 1. I think you nailed on the "why" for me. Season 2 is more of an info-dump like you mentioned, as well as being somewhat structurally similar to Season 1, in the sense of what the protagonist goes through, mistakes he makes, learns, develops, looping patterns and what not. I do think that season 2 did still separate itself from season 1 in lots of ways as well though. (Such as backstory, different character developments, use of return by death, etc.) I will say though that one of the main reasons why Season 1 was so good is because of the initial shock-value and subverting the generic isekai expectations we often see in anime, and unfairly good villains and mystery elements that were introduced such as Betelegeuse, and the Witch of Envy. And you know, Rem.

The only problem of Season 2 was pacing, characters introduced were great ,Garfield and Echidna were my favorite , Emilia finally can stand on her own two feet without needing Puck by her side, Subaru befriending everyone that initially didn't like him,finally kissing Emilia and one of mine favorite scenes Emilia thinking she is pregnant by kissing Subaru .

@@kennmarlow4889 I think the problem is that it didn't translate very well from book to television. If a sequel to be good needs to keep you interested and hyped for what will come out later, then Re:Zero S2 delivered BIG TIME I liked S1 but i never thought it was that amazing. It was, to me, a lot of shit happening with no context and little to none character development. So what i wanted from S2 was less random stuff and more context and character development; that's what i got and i am so glad about it. S2 with its plot twists, flashbacks and new characters added SO MUCH to the world building and plot in general. -Now we know that Betelgeuse isn't just a random clichè weirdo, now we know the role of Roswaal (that was an useless character in S1) and Beatrice, now we get a more detailed understanding around what the Witches mean for this world, now we know about the existence of devine blessings, NOW WE KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT SATELLA etc etc -Emilia, Subaru, Ram, Otto, Roswaal and Beatrice now feel like proper characters and not just stereotypes. I can't wait to see how facing their past will influence their future. Garfiel, Frederica Rizu, Echidna were a nice add to the cast and they expanded the lore of the show just by being there. I think that S2 was a big step up from S1 in every single aspect: Story, characters, dialogues, world building, animation, music, direction, pacing. Everything was better; i can't think of a single aspect that was worse or made the experience less enjoyable than S1

The short version of my opinion: Re Zero does not want us to see and eat a single piece of cake(Subaru's point of view) but it wants us to see the WHOLE cake, but it doesn't let us eat the whole cake in one go. That sets it apart from other isekai animes. Long version: Re Zero is not a story told from a single character's perspective, it's the story of ALL the people living in Re Zero's world. Everyone has their own goals, ideals, dreams, and desires and they do everything possible to achieve those dreams. It wants us to see how the same people react under different circumstances, and that only happens because of Return By Death. In season 1 and the first part of season 2, Subaru(alongside us) was trying to understand each character, be it Emilia, Roswal, Ram, or Garfiel. And he did, that's why he didn't feel the need to use RBD in the second half of season 2, as he had known enough about the world and the characters that he could intelligently predict their behavior and consequences of his own actions, and how it will affect the world. And since the audience had successfully understood HIS opinions on characters, the second half of season 2 fleshed out other characters. We wanted to know more about the witches, Emilia and her childhood, and how Betty got stuck in that library for centuries. Show wanted us to know that these characters aren't merely plot devices but actual people with emotions and understanding. Season 1 failed to do so, as so many characters were just there for plot progression or character development. And as much as one can like RBD mechanic, it becomes useless and redundant that everybody would stop caring about Subaru, they will be more interested in how he will deal with situations NEXT time rather than THIS time. This season perfectly encapsulates the theme of the Re Zero: "You can die as many times you like, but you will live only once."
@slushisimcambi2521

Season 2 is definitely about subverting one of the “lessons” Subaru learned in Season 1 regarding return by death. He has to rely and trust in others instead of just struggling over and over on his own. He has to respect himself enough to realize that RBD is hurting him and look outside himself for a solution. However; he has to be careful who he looks to for help. Echidna would have taken Subaru down a dark path if he had looked to her for aid, abusing return by death as a tool instead of sparing Subaru’s mentality.

it was expected for Subaru to not use his Return by Death in the second half of this season, because of his bet with Roswaal, if he had failed to complete the arc as it should be completed by saving everyone, Subaru would have payed a huge price (won't say what would have been to not spoil the last episode of season 2)

I will agree that the infodumps were pretty common in the second season, but it's like you said. Now that we've gotten all of the backstory surrounding Subaru, Emilia and all of the other characters, the mythical S3 can try and focus solely on the story, with the idea that if you're confused about things, S2 is there to help answer any questions you may have.

Author said that he wanted to see the entire series animated, and I believe there is enough of a fanbase to warrant it. He planned 11 arcs, anime just finished arc 4, and novel is on arc 7. From the novel readers I heard they still love it, so I'm hopeful it keeps the show interesting. I guess the biggest worry is that will it generate enough revenue? They completely forgone all ads in this seasons runtime, so they lost alot of profit...

I feel like the bunnies loop ending was good for the same reasons you critique it though. I agree, it is very similar to the season 1 if Emilia dies loop ending. Which is exactly why when the viewer sees the snow, it already feels ominous but then it isn't quite the same as in season 1 but the viewers initial thought is that it was caused by Emilia due to the season 1 memories. Then it's revealed that Roswall caused it and was essentially pinning in on Emilia on purpose, which is the big oh no moment when the viewer begins to get solid evidence that Roswall is scheming. I loved that, personally.

the info overload you speak about was a really nice paced worldbuilding for me,the reason the death-loop seamed similar to s1 to you was cause the same person planed it to push more n more subaru.s1 was "mainly" subarus story while s2 was "mainly" emilias story. even tho most ppl consider arc4(s2) the best arc of rezero(i also loved it in the webnovel) i think you re right to say that s1 of the animu was better.the adaptation was awesome and you can "tell" that white fox made it with love and care but as a storyits better in the webnovel by its "nature".....all n all rezero as a whole its a great animu and if white fox keeps making it till its end we re gona get something that will go down as a landmark in animu hstory!!

Re:ZERO's story is FAAAAARRRR from over, we've currently only seen 4 arcs adapted of a total of 11 which only have 6 fully written in the light novel which is currently in the 7th arc. We do have the material for a season 3 and 4 and even 5 depending on how they space it out, but the lack of ad breaks in season 2 worries me because I don't know if they actually made enough money on season 2 to fully warrant a season 3 However the director of this season did state that he wouldn't be working on the third term so we can assume that one is coming because of his wording which gives me hope.
