Granted a lot of Indie Games come out and do things like Tank Controls and Fixed Camera Angles well enough, but it's archaic.

I'm so glad I'm not alone in thinking this remake is severely lacking. The dialogue was the first thing I found strange, especially when Claire and Leon meet outside on either side of the fence. They talk and awkwardly flirt with each other like a zombie apocalypse isn't happening, they're so cool about the whole thing. That and Leon saying he needs to talk to the chief without even knowing if the chief is alive in this ZOMBIE INFESTED POLICE STATION. Great video well put together !

I come back to this video every so often, despite seeming like a simple negative hate rant it's a genuine well put together critique of the shortcomings RE2R has both as a remake and as its own story while also appreciating and highlighting all the things original RE2 did right, I genuinely think it's one of the best RE2R videos out here. It's a shame the original was deleted due to backlash, there seems to be a very pervasive attitude nowadays towards og horror games, people treat remakes as if they're inherently better by virtue of being the modern ''better'' option and the originals as if they're unplayably bad and treat it like the plague, and it's really sad to see how pressed some people can get when someone thinks a remake is worse than the original.

man, i went back to rewatch this video and was really sad to see it had been deleted. now that i understand why it makes me resent this fanbase so much---this video is one of the most well-thought out and passionate and not to mention GENUINE critiques i've seen of any of the games in the remake timeline. it comes from a place of genuine appreciation for how good resident evil could be if it was treated with the dignity it deserves by its developers and that's something i feel is really missing in the community right now. i would have loved to hear op discuss the more recent games as well, but for now i just hope they're doing well

On two of Sphere Hunters videos regarding RE2, in the RE2R spoiler free review, she talks about how Mr. X's final form music in RE2R actually sounds epic, yet uses the OG Mr. X final form OST later on in the video. Like what? You were just shitting on it a few minutes ago. Then when talking about Darkside Chronicles interpretation of RE2 (which is sadly and funnily enough, more faithful as a rail shooter than the actual remake), at the end she complains that Leon doesn't say they're going to take out umbrella, when RE2R Leon doesn't say it at the end either!?!? Thank you for the reupload. Dissenting voices are so important for videogames, especially when it comes to story and writing. I get the impression that most gamers are very sensitive to mechanical and aesthetic problems, but overlook huge issues with plot, characters and themes because they don't care as much. And hey, if you enjoy a game for its gameplay and atmosphere, you really shouldn't be losing sleep when someone points out that its story has major flaws; You're allowed to like media which isn't perfect on all fronts. I hate toxic positivity, and the fact that Wary felt the need to delete this review is depressing.

The worst thing about it is the fact they completely neutered the weapons from the original game. The shining exmple being Leon's upgraded shotgun that was a bad ass chunk of wood and metal that could turn a group of enemies inside out and leave the bigger baddies hurting but NOW is nothing but a generic hunting shotgun that is no fun to use because the enemies are annoying damage sponges

It's one of the reason why I played Claire more even thought I didn't liked changes made to her is that at least her weapons felt more fun to use. Not as generic, the grenade launches felt so satisfying. I miss the crossbow so much :(

This was made abundantly clear when I started replaying the re2 remake and trying to do potential speedruns of it I would be walking through sections of the game that have literally nothing going on. No ambient noise or soundtrack to mention, no enemies or challenges, no interesting visuals....just a long dark hallway with footstep sounds, over and over The original soundtrack dlc helps some, but it just makes it more clear that the remake was extremely lacking

@@Chaso-1124 Basically yes. If you're playing something for the first time or you're much younger then I think it's harder to notice. However as I get older, and I've been gaming for over 30 years, I start to pay more attention and notice these things. As you find yourself also having less and less time, you will often find yourself dedicating your time to what is the most fun. Am I going to replay the Resident Evil 2 remake, or am I going to replay Dead Space 2 and Vanquish? Everyone has different tastes, but the other two definitely have far superior gameplay that is more engaging. A highly atmospheric game is great for one time and that's it, same reason why I can't go back to the Resident Evil HD remake anymore. Sure it's a fantastic remake and it still looks incredible, but it's not fun to play at all, you just backtrack all over the place and solve puzzles.

@@PauloCesar-oz6dy Because that's the only thing you're looking at, it has a lot of other good aspects. 90% of the game is OG Jill Valentine, and it's original busty female character model they don't even use anymore because they streamlined her character model. It has a classic throwback to the original Resident Evil with its atmosphere, the campaign is pretty decent and length, it can be rather challenging, the controls are pretty good even allowing the player to walk and shoot. The Raid Mode is fantastic and loaded with content. The only Resident Evil game that tops it is the Resident Evil 4 remake, and obviously this is all an opinion. With so many games in the series including spin-offs, 10 different people would agree on 10 different games.

Regular guy Parker, anime redhead guy, anime girl Jessica with a costume that doesn't make sense for a soldier. Bland conspiracy plot. Awful enemies. I mean, people criticize village for werewolves but at least werewolves are cooler than lobsters. I will say that exploration is amazing tho, but not enough for me to put up with the rest.

What I find interesting is that I find myself enjoying RE3 Remake more than RE2 remake because it handles the writing, lore, character interactions, soundtrack, level design in a more entertaining and cohesive way. A lot of disingenuous people have really tarnished how solid RE3 Remake is as its own game despite some of its issues. Literally have seen people say that RE4 is one of their favorite games ever, but hate the action in RE3... 😑 Compare Remake of 2 and 3 exclusively, and don't factor in the originals. The remake of 3 has more spectacle, better character interactions/writing, and the same gameplay as RE2. Why is 3 considered worse? I prefer the originals of course, but I personally find it hilarious that the wrong remake is being praised, IMO.

@@GeosNotHere Jill's character is Leon from the original RE 4. All RE games are short. Nemesis wasn't a threat in the original since you could easily dodge them or run away from them the remake got that right and you could no longer easily avoided him. RE 3 is a better game than RE 2, RE 2 remake is a better "remake" than RE 3 Remake but RE 3 always wins in terms of plot, writing and gameplay material, RE 2 is also amazing, RE 4 well it isn't because it's just not Resident Evil without umbrella, zombies and downgraded survival horror.

I really like the remake but this persons critique is absolutely spot on. The storytelling is pretty fundamentally awful. I still think the game of itself is pretty good, The mechanics and combat decision making and all that good stuff. But the writing is definitely horrendous in the remake. I really like Callisto Protocol but I definitely acknowledge it has issues, and I agree with a good amount of the criticisms directed at it but I still think overall it’s a solid action horror title. The combat really hits a sweet spot for me personally, I’d never go after someone for critiquing things I like, I really wish people were more open to critical thinking and discussions and also realize that just because you have criticisms or things you don’t like about it doesn’t even necessarily mean you hate it. And even if they did hate it, so what? They’re entitled to their opinion, and it shouldn’t hurt their enjoyment of it just because someone else doesn’t like it.

Why *would* he expect it to affect reptiles? It's odd that a virus would affect humans and dogs in essentially the same way (there *are* transmissible diseases in nature, but they are very rare), but maybe it's handwaved by it being a biologically engineered weapon? And also originating from a parasite or whatever - RE lore is kind of shit, really. At any rate, just because he's seen dogs affected by the virus doesn't mean it would be logical to expect it to affect reptiles, plants, or anything else. I'm not aware of *any* virus that can affect humans, dogs, *and* crocodiles (or other reptiles.) Oh, and don't forget about all the mutated bugs in the other games.

Good for you telling the truth about this. I was bored to tears by this remake and had no interest in 3 as a result. I'm disappointed by the offerings or lack thereof on all platforms, so I sat this gen out and really didn't buy many games throughout the last gen either. The first new game I bought in years was RE4 remake recently -- for the PS4 -- because I was just bored. It is one of the worst games I've ever played in my entire life for all the reasosn you mentioned about 2 in this video. I ended up breaking and trashing the disc as well as the insert and just saving the empty case for a loose disc in the future. I then redownloaded the HD Xbox One version of the original 4 and had a blast replaying it. These remakes play it very safe and seem inoffensive on the surface, but they are extraordinarily boring, uninspired and a total slog to play through. I think a game should only be remade if it was poor to begin with. If a good game is remade, there has to be something truly different and special about it. I also just hate the re engine. The visuals and performance are just very poor. Well done -- you have a good voice for narration, by the way.

This and "Ruby Of Blue" reviews are my favs. I loved RE2 back then but this game was a huge let down. There was so much they could have added without making it seem too bloated. A/B scenarios. Claire fights william birkin 4 in both a and b in her scenatios while leon fights the super tyrant in both a and b. In the original, on the a scenario, your first boss is the g embryo, then you fight william birkin 2, 3 and 4 on the a scenario. On the b scenario, you fight william birkin 1 first, then his third form, fourth form and you can also affect both scenarios with the weapon locker. You can take everything in there, or leave some for the b scenario if you open it on the a scenario. In the lab, there's also gas you can use to make the enemies weaker, but it will make them stronger on the b scenario. The tyrant also only shows up on the b scenario too to make it even more special. That's what i miss seeing in the remake, all those details.

Absolute legend who called out a bad product. I remember feeling genuinely disappointed after playing through all scenarios and seeing the bottom of the toilet bowl "dlc" expansion. I really liked the game at first, the atmosphere and zombie designs are incredible. The main issue it seems is too much is taken away in favor of just making it all action focused. There isn't much of a care for fleshing out the little details in the story. Part of the cuts is likely a result of cutting down development time. There was a huge cost to developing this game. Game's have gotten way too big and way too expensive to make. We need to go back to art style which is why indie titles are the future.

This highly ambitious remake, despite adhering to old-school mechanics, contains a number of subtle distortions that make it, script-wise, a pale imitation of the original. As you claim, the attitudes and interactions of the characters almost always appear contrived and inauthentic. What was implied now becomes all too forced; this weakens the fascination with mystery, with the unsolved, just as the vague romantic patina that enriched the original title is lost. Such elements in 'The Darkside Chronicles', although limited by obvious gameplay choices, were nonetheless present. Instead, here, they have been replaced by protagonism and sometimes crude as well as unsightly solutions (such as the interaction between Claire and Irons, or again, the rhetorical ending with the truck driver making the 'finger up' gesture). Equally questionable is the choice of making certain environments too dark, so much so as to have to justify the prolonged use of the torch (which frankly may make sense in similar titles, but which in Resident Evil was never contemplated, let alone felt the need for). Ultimately, I maintain the utmost respect for the effort made by the developers, however I feel it is fair to point out the lack of intellectual honesty in comparison to the original title. In general, nowadays, one comes up against a content 'vacuum' that insidiously invests the most varied forms of entertainment. Good news: They can be played via Emulator. Bad news: RE 2 OG and RE 3 OG felt rushed in some places that the "remakes" made it better.

@@White927 Why still use emulator when GOG makes the game run better on modern PCs. Despite the gameplay improvement, RE2R didn't do exactly well with the A/B scenarios while RE3R cut down too many stuffs including Barry's cameo.

@@player2-lightwater914 Because Duckstation perfectly emulates those games the way creators intended to be, the PC and Dreamcast version feels like a "game reward DLC" unlock that was a thing in the 90's before they even called them DLC's and just came with the games. RE 2 Remake did well with the storyline, writing and graphics very well, I can agree about the B scenario and zapping system for harder difficulties but that's the only thing. RE 3 Remake had clock tower, RE 2 remake also had clock tower, RE 3 Remake made Tyrell Patrick got a bigger cameo instead that was rushed in the original game and IMHO it's actually better that Carlos and Jill escapes the city without any help from outside of the city, the live selection choices also didn't made any sense in the original game.

I love this video and I genuinely think it's the best commentary made on the remake issues out there, but the creator asked other re-uploaders to take it down. She isn't comfortable with it up. Look up Uncanny J.H, he posted her comment on his video requesting that. I'm just commenting to inform you in case you don't know about the creator's wish for this video.

I'm glad I got to play RE2R and love it how I did, and then get to watch this video. This video doesn't take away the fun I had, but it makes me realize that I overlooked a lot. You make a strong case that RE2R could have been way better than it was if they'd focused on improving the original rather than reinterpreting it with broad strokes that miss the point. I don't know if the game you wanted was possible in the world of modern game development, but we can always wonder what if.

I genuinely f*cking Hate the Hivemind mindset that a lot of Shill "Fans" and the Internet in general has these days. If You disagree in the slightest with them or You don't like what they like, all of them will start harassing You, doxxing You, and even sending death threats just because You didn't agree with their opinion. In this specific case for what is: A mostly half-assed product (Which is funny because REmake 2 was also was stuck on development hell just like the original game, but that doesn't excuse the end product, they should have taken extra time to get this right and just didn't. When I played REmake 2 I hated it not only because of the Story, but because of many changes that were made, areas or enemies that were removed, the way they made A and B scenarios completely trivial and samey, the way the characters were forced into unidimensional tropes... Thank You for making this video, even if a lot of Incels jumped in to harass You. This video is awesome and a testament that people can still speak up, and reject modernized products that for the most part are crappy cash grabs to make modern audiences happy. I appreciate You! Claire and Leon are largely unchanged from the original. I liked the original's writing and delivery more, but the personalities and traits of the characters didn't change between versions. RE2R Leon and RE2 Leon are essentially the same character (which can't be said for RE4R and RE4.) The story also doesn't change significantly; some small details are different, but the major story beats are identical. Loss of proper B scenarios does hurt, but they also made it clear from the outset that the B scenarios weren't supposed to be entirely different in the way that they were in the original. They were *very* open about this. Leon's B side is kind of pointless, honestly, but Claire's is a lot of fun because the Single Action Army is quite a lot different from both of her other pistols.

@exiledmonastic4650 There's nothing Leon could do to save Ben. Mr. X punched through a fucking concrete wall and had him by the head and was dragging him up the wall. Leon hadn't unlocked the door, there's zero chance any human is strong enough to break a tyrant's grip even if the door were unlocked, and shooting its hand would be ineffective and would have a *very* high chance of hitting Ben. Keep in mind, in RE2R, Leon meets Ben about 30 seconds before Ben is killed by Mr. X. This is different from RE2, where Leon meets Ben significantly earlier and would have time to get to know him a bit before his death. It makes sense that he would have less emotion to Ben's death in RE2R, particularly since his only interaction with him had Ben badmouthing the chief of police while in a jail cell (and Leon is a rookie fresh from academy that clearly hasn't figured out that cops often aren't the good guys, which is true in RE2 as well.) This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about, when I say that this isn't a good video. She clearly didn't spend enough really working through her pieces and considering her points and supporting material. Sucks that she called it quits, but if she was getting harassed, that was probably safer... I hate the internet sometimes.

@exiledmonastic4650 She's completely out of touch if she thinks Leon could have done anything to save Ben in RE2R. Have you watched the cutscene recently? Mr. X punches through a wall and grabs Ben's head. Only his hand and a tiny portion of his wrist is visible. The rest of Mr. X is hidden behind the wall. The cell door is locked and Leon doesn't have a key or access to the cell. Leon is not strong enough to break Mr. X's grip even if he could get into the cell (likely no human could.) Trying to shoot a hand, even a very large hand, with nothing but a pistol is highly unlikely and if he misses, the bullet will go straight into Ben's head. If you or she think that Leon could have done anything to save Ben, it shows complete and total ignorance of how guns work in real life. And even if Leon could hit Mr. X's hand, we've seen in gameplay how ineffective the handgun is at dealing with him - dozens of bullets just to make him pause for a moment, with no indication of lasting harm.

I was one of the rare person that found RE3 remale better then the 2. I know it was short and I did miss the Clock Tower but at least Jill was more herself, not perfect of course, but a unique cool bad ass lovable female charactor. Leon's look so angry all the time and Claire too goofy and akward at moment.

Her feminism is her one blindspot. Yes it's evident the characters are weaker in the remake, but she needlessly hyperfocuses on any instant where a woman is vulnerable or wants help from a man as if that's self-evidently a poor tonal choice. It's enough to just show that the character's motivations and dialogue are lackluster without needless speculation that the writers have some kind of issue with female characters. Leon, Ada, and Claire rely on each other and show extraordinary resilience and competence in the face of danger outside of their moments of vulnerability.

As someone who grew up with the original RE trilogy and still holds the original RE2 as the pinnacle of survival horror, I found this critique extremely verbose, but ultimately shallow and born out of nostalgia rather than objective argumentation. The remake essentially revamps the story in the mold of character realism, while the original was based in an unapologetically fictitious mode of character development. Granted, RE lends itself better to the original narrative style of 100% fleshed out and consistent character arcs due to its SCI-FI/horror genre designation, hence the original is superior, but calling the remake utter trash is way off base and speaks more to extreme nostalgia. I understand why other old school fans of RE disliked the remakes, but their success is well deserved. Deal with it.

@@cuttrogue As I said, I’m a die-hard fan of the original RE2, but the character dialogue is not realistic, it’s exactly the way a comprehensive fictional novel works from a 3rd person omniscient perspective. Every single detail is neatly accounted for, almost to the point of being Tolkien-like. This isn’t a negative thing in my view, by the way, as I prefer this style of storytelling. Real life has gaps in information, and frankly speaking, Ada’s cover as an FBI agent makes a lot more sense in fooling Leon than a “I’m looking for my boyfriend and I happen to have military-level marksmanship”. So which Leon is dumber again? I don’t need to watch this overblown rant of a video twice to get the message. You guys wanted the exact same video game, point by point, with upgraded graphics. It's why every scene feels so uncanny and cringeworthy. Also, it's a videogame about people transforming into giant monsters, that's inherently unrealistic. Quality writing for an intertainment media differs from trying to mimic real life and failing at it, huge finding by you there champ. What people wanted is quality remake that respects the original media it is remaking. Look up the definition for what remake is. Improving the rough parts and expanding it. Not butchuring it with downgrades to the scenario system and making character personalities into uncanny clowns and one-note caricatures.

Every character is changed into the opposite of who they were in the original for no reason and this has massive effects on the story.
