Hello Gary, I have a unique issue with the transmission on a 2002 frontier 4cy 2wd. When cold or first drive, the transmission has a delay when moving in the D position. If i push the OD button off , the transmission will move instantly. I have no-issues otherwise. The truck runs perfectly, and on the road shifts perfectly and smooth.

Hi Gary - Thanx for making great videos and showing your expertise. My 98 Pathfinder has been taking longer and longer in cold weather to shift into overdrive. Now it doesn't shift into overdrive until very hot in summer and driving at highway speed. Then it shifts from overdrive to 3rd and back.. over and over with no hills in sight. I haven't ever changed the the trans fluid. I purchased it for $500 - 8 yrs ago. It's got 335,000 kms on it or 210,000 miles. Your suggestions on a solution will be appreciated. Thanx

I ordered a new filter and gasket. The parts never came in yesterday so I did a flush anyway. Disconnected the driver side hose from the rad - connected a pc of clear plastic into a drain pan..started it. It quickly pumped out purple brown fluid. Did a reconnect - added trans fluid and Sea Foam Trans Tune. Ran it thru the gears for 3 - 4 minutes. Drained it and it came out very dark then changed to nice red. Added a bottle of Lucas Tran Fix and topped up the fluid. It seems to work good and shifted into OD yesterday with a good lock up on the hiway at 100 - 120 km hr. TODAY it does't shift into OD AT ALL. Cud it be my thermostat? or temp sensor on the thermostat housing? It's 70 degrees out and the temp gauge on the dash never moved for over 2 km.

Hi Gary, sweet video. I noticed two things in my ‘03 Pathfinder RE4R01A: is it normal to have zero engine braking in 4th gear? Is it also normal for rpms to drop to idle speed with foot off accelerator at highway speeds (ie. coasting downhill)? The torque converter locks up, but you have to have a little bit of load on the accelerator pedal (ie maintaining speed on a flat highway). Just wondering if i should be looking into repairs or keep on driving. I have no other RE4R01A to compare it to. Thank you 😊

Hello! Do you know if all the RE4R01A's from 2001 and on came with the HD version or was is just the Pathfinder that got the HD version? The one I am talking about has the 4/5 Pinion Planet, 12 Lug Sun Shell, Different High Drum, and 12 Lug Reverse Drum.
@GaryFerraro Жыл бұрын
Well, I think it may be a matter of early or late, I looked up the reverse drum and it shows 98 to 04 while the early drum is 88 to 04. I guess on the vehicles with a lager engine they used the HD Version but i would think 98 and up

Finally someone who seems to know about these things.. I have a 03 pathfinder with this transmission.. she has 450,000 k’s (270,000 miles roughly).. runs like a dream. But the other day I lost all gears at the bottom of a valley.. let it cool and they came back until it got hot.. got the car home.. had a loud whine coming from what seemed like the converter but I had gears again and it drove. Now it’s back to normal.. selecting all gears.. coming out of lockup and kicking down which it didn’t like to do before. Fluid is the right colour, the right level, and the right smell.. any ideas mate? All I’ve done is replace the filter which was pretty gummed up but not bad enough to stop it working. No metal or discolouration in the transmission anywhere that I can see. Thanks mate

Hi, why the service manual for the 4x4 Nissan Pathfinder 1998 with the rear 2wd part time option says, that the vehicle can ( but not recommended ) to be towed with the rear drive wheels on the ground at the speed no more than 60 mph with the transmission and the transfer case in neutral ? Does the transfer case in neutral not totally disconnect the front and/or rear wheels from the transmission? Your opinion would be highly appreciated.

Hi Gary, I've been having problems with my trans not shifting up to 3rd gear. I removed the valve body to check the solenoid's, they seemed to free up OK. But after reassembly and refilling with ATF, the trans is driving forwards in every gear (PRND21). The instruction document I used just said to reinstall the shifter shaft in the valve body, it didn't mention connecting it to the inside part of the shifter linkage. So I just put the shaft completely inside the valve body and bolted up the valve body. Now this really didn't seem right to me, but the instruction manual was quite comprehensive, so when it didn't say anything about connecting the shaft and linkage, I presumed it was intentional. But now I think that is the problem. What are your thoughts?

Hi Gary. Thanks for videos and good info. Stephen from New Zealand here. I have a 1995 Nissan 4x4, with one of these gearboxes in it. It works perfectly, except for reverse. Absolutely nothing, at anytime. I thought of checking the tension on the reverse band, however it's in a hard to get at spot. Now I'm thinking about going up through the band servo hole to see if the band is broken. Is that a possibility? How would you go about a diagnosis, preferably without removing the gearbox from the vehicle? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
@michaelgreene44366 жыл бұрын
I bent the flexplate causing the torque converter to be pulled away from the transmission about a half inch. The starter scraped metal shavings in to the bellhousing so I pried the transmission dust cover back and sprayed water to wash away the shavings. I think water somehow got into the transmission this way. The fluid had a chocolate milk look to it. I’ve since flushed the trans oil and put a new flexplate on. I flushed with 12 quarts of new oil but at the end there were still a bunch of tiny bubbles coming out. The current issue is that when the transmission is warm and after 55mph driving, when I come to a stop the RPM drop very low(500) and when I hit the gas the RPM go up to about 1500-2000 with little forward movement, then it’ll jerk forward a couple times before letting go and driving normal. There are no sharp noises from the transmission, no grinding, but I do hear softer noises sometimes what sounds like a helicopter thudding from a distance. Could this be foaming of the oil because of water? Do you think this could be resolved by continued flushing of the oil? This is a 1999 Infiniti QX4
@GaryFerraro6 жыл бұрын
Did you check your radiator to make sure no oil was in there. shooting water up in the bell really shouldn't get in the trans thats all sealed, if your oil looks like a milk shake then seems like water is in the trans. how long is the trans not shifting correctly?
@michaelgreene44366 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro thank you for helping me!!!! I bypassed the radiator a while ago and have changed the trans oil since then. Here’s what it looked like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l17SimqVad-sns0 I put a pint of Seafoam Hydratune in an attempt to remove any moisture that did get in there and then I flushed it again with Mercon V. Now everything is working normally except that I can hear some noise coming from the torque converter area. It sounds like a low pitched whirling noise that is only present when I am moving forward under the torque converters power with no gas pedal. I am wondering if maybe instead of moisture that opaque color of the trans oil was actually clutch material from the torque converter since it was likely starved of oil in some way while it was pulled away from its normal position because of the bent flexplate. The rest of the trans seems good except a grungy shift from 2nd to 3rd IF the RPM are above 3500 during the shift. It sounds/feels like the grunginess is coming from the torque converter though. Do you think I should get a new torque converter? Or do you think that grungy shift could mean the rest of the trans is damaged?

Hello from Japan! At the point of initial release, the needle bearing in question was a part of front internal gear ASSY, not replaceable, so I hear. Therefore not only on the ATSG DWG, but it is not shown on the NISSAN original maintenace manual. However, it is incovenient not to replace the bearing except ASSY. So engineering change seems to be done for it. Engineering change is not limited this. Hello Gary, I have that box model in nissan terrano 92 diesel, I repaired a gear problem of a planetarium, but after the assembly I used oil dexron III, after that ONLY when the oil reaches the optimum temperature does not make the change to D4. my question is, is the oil used right? will it be product of the type of oil the fault? before this it worked correctly. regards
@GaryFerraro6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, the computer makes this happen so the car heats up faster. The only advice i can give is see if the computer is commanding 4th when the car is cold, for this you can use a volt meter. That oil is ok to use. Before you had 4th all the time?
@jorgecorrea19636 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro in cold works correctly, how is it possible to measure with voltmeter?
@GaryFerraro6 жыл бұрын
The solenoids are on/off, this means there is either 12 volts or zero volts, there are 2 shift solenoids, im not sure whats on in 4th i have to look, but put the volt meter on either solenoid A and/or B and see if the computer commands the shift. The computer usually supplies the ground for the soleniod. so put the volt meter on a or b and watch the voltage.

Hi Gary, great Video. I will be working on a RE4R01A out of a 2000 infinity QX4, 4x4. I have 2 question - there is a transmission bone yard here in my small town who has some of these transmissions. (#1) I was wondering if I could use one of these for parts but wasn't sure if the RE4R01A all have the same internals. Salvage yards tell me I can use only 1999 and 2000 model years but transtec list the RE4R01A the same 1997 to 2003. (#2 question) the previous owner of the car said he pulled the vehicle on a dolly for 1000 + miles and burned up the pump. It still drives but in 3rd gear only with out reverse and when idling in park the engine is held back like your in drive with foot on brake. Also, it will engage gear when neutral is selected. You can't push the car in neutral until you turn off the engine. What all do you think I'll find damaged? (Sorry for the long comment)
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
Hello, To answer question #2 first, the problem is the foward clutch is locked together so it wont release, its always on, I believe the internals are the same, but i would want to ask my rep or look in my parts book just to be sure, i used to stock the planet sets at least 3 of them, very common to go bad. Where are you located? Gary

Those planetary gears are known to go bad, you may want to drop the pan to see whats in it, if its bad i would suggest to change out the radiator as well, if its not cleaned properly the trans can get contaminated again

Steve, not 100% sure on that, these transfer cases never go bad, i never worked on one, you may want to seperate the trans from the t-case and if the output shafts are the same (which they probably are)use your transfer case

Great bunch of videos on your channel! We have a 93 300ZX that suddenly lost all drive and reverse (at any RPM). Ran diagnostics with no issues found (blinking light solution). Line pressure in all positions is about 40psi; goes no higher regardless of RPM. Pulled apart the valve body and checked for stuck valves or bad springs; all the solenoids in spec for resistance; no issues found. Removed the transmission - looks like someone rebuilt it not too long ago - all the clutches and steels are good, no bad hard parts, bushings, bearings, etc. Still need to check the pump for tolerances but it visually looks OK and the ridge on the 'finger' is small but I'll clean up with a file. Converter check seems to indicate the sprag is good. Any ideas on what this might be? We're stumped.

Did you by chance unplug the solenoid harness to see what the pressure does while the gauge is hooked up, did you check the converter splines to see if anything stripped? This happened all of a sudden?
@toddkovi28497 жыл бұрын
We did not unplug the solenoids during the pressure check. The splines for the stator and turbine look good. When I insert the input shaft I can feel good resistance from the turbine, meaning I don't think the hub weld broke. The stator roller clutch seems fine as it's working one way as expected. Since the transmission is out of the car I just checked the harness for opens or intermittent for all the soleniod pack connections and the lock up solenoid and found none - all seem good connections. My nephew was driving at highway speed, about 60-65mph and lost all forward gears (D4-D3-2-1) and after pulling to the side of the road found that reverse was not working either. Before we decided to remove the transmission I pulled apart the valve body and checked the solenoid pack, replaced the o-rings, checked all the springs for length to spec (all good), no hung up valves, no metal chips or chunks, only normal clutch material in the pan - minimal amount. Put everything back together and had the same results. Thus we decided to pull the transmission to make sure we didn't have a different failure.

Great video.. I have one of these boxes on a nissan largo people carrier with 470ft lbs of torque. The AT supposed to have been a bullet proof unit but I think what has messed it up is the flare between changes as the accumaltor mod has not been done. I still get all gears but reverse feels like brakes are on and it does not creep in reverse. Also whn in neutral the rear wheels spin quite fast when jacket up off the ground. Got the AT off the vehicle yesterday, any idea what could be wrong? Have been told it could be the forward clutch. Also in your vid you recommend a mod around the fluid intake do you have anymore details on this? The company that supplied the upgraded parts for the box back in 2012 have an uprated service kit have you heard about this kits? Tks

Did this car creep or move foward in neutral? how did it shift in the higher gears? the 2-3 shift and the 3-4 shift?
@grahamh64447 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks so much for coming back to me. Car still drives and all gears avaialble. TBH the shift had never been the fastest always had rpm flare when giving it a lot of gas which is what was probably the cause of the issues I am guessing. In neutral with the car on the ground it does not creep but if the rear wheels are off the ground they spin quite fast but can be stopped by putting your foot on the tyre. Here is a video of it up and running of the ground. I also he a whirring noise in park and neutral that was not there before> the whirring gets more pronounced when you press the foot brake. All this started after a fluid change, I have put the old fluid back in with a 50/50 mix of old and new as I totally lost drive with more or less all new in the transmission. I have the transmission off the vehicle now BTW the shift quality has not got any worse since the issues. When I first changed the fluid the filter had no debris on the gauze. The magnet had a slight coating of magnetic sludge. After putting in the new fluid and when I lost drive I now have some black particles (small flakes like grains of sand)on the filter. drive.google.com/open?id=0B8yptSHavevPN0VuaWxDamV6eEE Also here are some pics that I took of the TQ convertor etc when I pulled the AT. drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B8yptSHavevPNGhwX3M4RW1uNlE?usp=sharing

you welcome, note: Transmissions are the most complex machines in vehicles , make sure when you work on them you do every step correct and according to its specs one wrong item displacement ? and entire transmission can get shot . if you have any other questions ? I suggest you ask Gary Ferraro , I trust he is an expert on Transmissions and from what I observed from his teachings he shows extraordinary level of understanding how Transmissions works and what causes them to go bad .

hey Gary , remember when I posted for you earlier about my RL4R01A transmission I rebuilt had a shifting problem , I had the time past few days and Took it down and found out the high gear planetary thrust washer ( inner washer ) was destroyed and that was due to the oil pump needle bearing ( between the output shaft and the pump input shaft ) was missing , so this time I inspected and reinspected every single part , and it worked fine , however ? I can't find any information that shows exactly how to adjst my transmission throttle wire to meet its specs ( it should be reading 42mm to 49 mm or 1.59 to 1.79 inch ) at seating motion to full throttle max , mine cable is in need to be adjusted to that and is missing about 20mm in total length to be adjusted . do you have any information or Idea of adjusting the transmission throttle wire ? thanks again as I promised to come back and let you all know why my KA24D/ RL4R01A transmission was not shifting to 2nd gear , above was the reason why : always make sure you got all the parts in order and to the exact specification required or you will face problems as I did . thank you Gary for all the help in advance
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
When you say throttle wire, you mean the cable correct? What is the trans shifting at now?
@AnunnakiThe17 жыл бұрын
yes, the cable it self. from D1 to D2 is between 31- 41 MPH and almost at full throttle , it should shift at half throttle between 18 to 21 MPH and from D2 - D3 from 35 to 40 MPH and from D3 - D4 from 65 - 71 . it is shifting from D2-D3 , but ? from D1 to D2 ? it is a hard shift and have to go full throttle to accomplish the shift at 33 to 41 MPH . the Governor valves and its assembly I checked and tested all doing their Job , the control valves and lines pressures are checked a GO to the specification required . what caught my attention was a Note that demanded to readjust the throttle cable every time the transmission been torn down and rebuilt . and I think that is the problem right there
@AnunnakiThe17 жыл бұрын
well I found out how to adjust the transmission cable , there is a spring loaded mechanism in its mounting box I had to figure out LOL , by pushing the plate inward the housing box it unlock the spring and you can move the cable body upward or downward , so it fixed the 1st Drive to second , but now ? all my line pressures are reading low during stall test of D, 2 and 1 positions ( regardless to ODO on or Off according to test procedure ) . , the chart says if low pressure ? the problem lies in the following : oil pump wear
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
with the cable set where it should go, so it doesnt shift late, put a gauge to check line pressure, but check it when cold, let the car run see if it stays or drops when the car is hot.

2000 frontier v6 automatic. I took the valvebody out and cleaned the selonoids. After repair, reverse, neutral, and all gears besides park only move forward now at a crawl pace. Is there something I did to cause this during the disassembly and assembly? Truck was fine before other than a hard shift. The only thing I noticed was that the manual valve would try to spin and slide out on its own when tilting the valve body. The pan, screen was clean, solenoids checked out fine and cleaned them anyway. Originally the only problem was a hard shift through take off. Any idea's?

Gary Ferraro no I am not sure if the manual valve is hooked up. Could you describe how to do that? The Nissan factory repair manual doesn't mention this anywhere that I can see. When I took out the Valve body I flipped the valve body over and the manual valve slid out, I couldn't tell at what turning orientation it's supposed to go back in. The manual also doesn't specify how to get those accumulator return Springs B, C, and D to go back together properly, I sort of just finger felt them back in place as I mounted the valve body bolts back on.

Hi Gary! I am attempting to rebuild my RE401RA from my nissan pathfinder 4x4. I had some issues with it jumping between gears (4-3)a lot so I think it might be a solenoid issue. also when I disassembled it, I noticed that the friction material has broken off the brake band and the rivets on the brake band ground down on the drum. can you resurface the drum to remove the imperfections? also what tool did you remove the accumulator pistons?
@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
+Cuong Nguyen One thing i would like for you to check for the jumping gears, is the pump slide actuator, its common for the actuator to get burred up and it sticks in the low pressure position. If the band is worn down and the drum is damaged where the band rides, it really depends how bad it is, you dont want to take too much off the drum because the band needs to stop the drum from turning when the band is applied, so you dont want the ends of the band to close together. How are the planetarys? The tool i use to remove the accumulator pistons is a pair of snap ring pliers. Gary
@tommynguyen028 жыл бұрын
+Gary Ferraro I am still familiarizing myself with the transmission but I'm guessing you are referring to a pin on the back side of the pump? @GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
+Cuong Nguyen The actuator is actually inside the pump, you have to take the bolts out, when the pump[ comes apart, you will see the pump gear and vains inside the pump slide(this is where the pump gear and vains ride) off to the side you will see the actuator, you have to remove the pump gear vains and slide(and slide spring) to get to the actuator, the underside of the actuator will be sharp and may be burred up, you will have to clean the sharp edges off. I show that in my video, its a common problem. Gary

+Gary Ferraro thanks again! how do you go about cleaning the brake band drum surface? I was thinking about using some emery clothing and clean it by hand. I can feel the grooves with my finger nail. what does that servo cover operate?

@@GaryFerraro what if 4th isnt working. it just goes to 3rd without over revving as if its in overdrive mode. this servo isnt the issue?
@GaryFerraro4 жыл бұрын
dcomputers If no 4th. First you have to see if fourth is being commanded by the computer. If the computer sees something like high engine temp or a problem with the Throttle position sensor may inhibit 4th gear. Are there any codes present? If all that looks ok could be a solenoid problem and possible servo too
@dcomputers4 жыл бұрын
@@GaryFerraro tps is tested good and adjusted. no codes. removed valve body and solenoids I end up swapping it out due to damage gasket on body. after swapping. the old valve body it made no difference. its not solenoid issue or valve body so im wondering maybe servo. sometimes you could feel the weak engagement to 4th but drops out and continues in 3rd or overdrive

@@dcomputers very well could be, did you by chance air check the servo when the valvebody was down?

I seem to have this transmission. It's been making this noise for around 40k miles now. Would this be the transmission pump? www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/comments/833u1f/2002_nissan_frontier_24l_transmission_noise/?st=jejj6h80&sh=f4a3251c

That sounds like either a solenoid buzz or valve buzz, when you put the trans in gear does it go away?
@Boom10ful6 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro Thanks for replying! The transmission is in drive, brake pedal applied and idling when it does this. It only makes this noise every once in a while but lately it's been more frequent. It only happens when the car is at a slight decline or if the driver side is slightly elevated compared to the other side.
