Reach Out Mbuya Community (ROM ) Health Initiative is a community based Non- Governmental Organisation working with the urban and rural poor communities. ROM provides a unique model of care to People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and at sometimes their families; providing them with medical, social, and economical services such that they can live a dignified life.
Headquartered in Mbuya, ROM started in May 2001 at Our Lady of Africa Mbuya Catholic Parish to address the AIDS scourge in the slum communities of the Parish. ROM aims to curb the further spread of HIV among the less privileged members of the community it serves and enable those already living with HIV/AIDS to live a responsible and dignified life. ROM runs three service sites; Mbuya, Banda, and Kinawataka. It has since experienced rapid growth scaling up further beyond the parish jurisdiction.
According to UNAIDS data, 1.4 million Ugandans are estimated to be living with HIV. More than 1.3 million of them are currently receiving PEPFAR-supported HIV treatment.
Currently, ROM is the implementing partner of PEPFAR COP23 OVC program funded by PEPFAR through USAID. ROM is also implementing a five year Kampala HIV project funded by PEPFAR through CDC. ROM is implementing these two projects in all the five divisions of Kampala providing HIV/AIDS related services aimed at reducing new HIV infections.
