I realize that the video is over 3 years old, and that my comment is not timely, however, you have completely missed all of the main points of Ruth. I'll give you a small hint, Elimelech was not forced to sell his land in Israel, he came to that conclusion in spite of the explicit instructions on how to treat our fellow man found mostly in Leviticus. He was given several divine hints to return, and in spite of those hints, actually sunk deeper roots in Moab by marrying his sons to Moabite princesses. He chose his physical wealth over his spiritual obligations, as did his two sons, and his wife. Ruth declaring that she wished to change her name to Mara, or Mary was her admission that she finally got it, and that she needed teshuvah, (repentance.) During the famine, since Elimelech was literally the only one who had not descended to the level of depravity necessary to bring the famine upon Israel, he remained wealthy. The laws of Leviticus told him that he would be required to basically feed the entire nation if possible, or to at the very least give charity to all who came and asked. Rather than facing that scenario, he picked up his things and left, and he did so without so much as offering up a prayer for his countrymen. In the end, he and his family lost everything, and Naomi was forced to return home with nothing. Since she returned during the festival of Shavuot, everyone who saw her and her family leave with their great wealth also saw her return with nothing. She was forced to humble herself. The major theme of Ruth is Chesed, or kindness. The kindness that Boaz showed to Ruth and Naomi is contrasted with the kindness that Elimelech and his family failed to show Israel. Ruth was both kind and unfailingly modest, (I know you will have a follow up question to this, and I can not wait.) She was kind to her mother in law, and to her host. Naomi was rewarded for giving up her selfishness and showing kindness to Ruth and Orpah. Please learn Hebrew if you wish to study the Hebrew scriptures. There is a fullness of understanding that is not possible through English translations.

IT LOOKS LIKE ELIMELECH IS TRYING TO ESCAPE GOD'S WRATH/JUDGEMENT.... THE PLAN WAS BY GOD FOR ISRAEL TO ENTER THE PROMISE LAND & LIVE IN GOD'S WILL. ELIMELECH IS TAKING UPON HIMSELF TO LEAVE.
