It was a great interview and I learned about few syntaxes myself which are easy to forget when not used on daily basis. However, he was a fresher and interviewing live with someone from Microsoft, his nervousness was justified. We could be little polite while pointing out his mistakes.

Understand the data structure. Before starting to code, plan the data structure (tasks state object with its nested keys here in interview as a example ) and data transformations (how to modify data based on user actions). Because the coding steps depends/changes on how you defined the structure of data. All the best!
