French Grandes Ecoles are the equivalent to Ivy Leagues in the U.S. However Grandes Ecoles are not considered to be Universities which is why French Universities don't rank as high as American ones do but actually I read that it's more difficult to get into école normal supèrieur than it is to get into Harvard.
@jordanfabula31374 жыл бұрын
That's exactly the same way I thought about it when I learned about the grandes écoles for the first time from this video! Even politicians make their way into political office through the grandes écoles, just like American politicians do through the Ivy League schools.
@rimberse34054 жыл бұрын
No, they aren't. They are inferior to Ivies lol. Princeton, Upenn and Harvard are better than anything you would find in France lol. >> French Universities don't rank as high as American ones PSL, Paris Saclay and Sorbonne take the first 3 places in France (according to QS, Times and Shanghai rankings). Only "écoles de commerce" don't appear in rankings, because they only teach one thing and they have their own ranking. >> it's more difficult to get into école normal supèrieur than it is to get into Harvard No idea about Harvard, but it would be way more difficult to get into MIT than into Polytechnique.

It's also important to understand the purpose of national EDUCATION by countries in the world, therefore their "elites schools". (Comparing the rankings could be futile, like the question of apples and oranges, or "Which intelligence organization is the best in the world",...) Do the products who came out serve their country economically, culturally (yes, sports, arts, media...), politically, etc... well ? Will the graduates of Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Écoles Normales Supérieures, TU (Berlin? Stuttgart ?), etc. help their country and people better? Especially if they become 'experts' and participate in some governments or "administration teams" ? Hint: Fight(s) against Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and beyond.

Thanks for this video. I love Stellas French. Her accent is super clear and I want to achieve this level of fluency in french as well. Funny enough, she butchered the German part. She said: "Ich bin ein Sänger von Korea", which would translate to: I'm a male singer of Korea". What she should have said is either "Ich bin eine koreanische Sängerin" (= I'm a female Korean singer) or "Ich bin eine Sängerin aus Korea" (= I'm a female singer from Korea). Anyways kudos to her for being able to speak so many languages.

I've always wondered why being en Engineer is such a big status in France. For instance, when you become an Engineer you get the title "titre d’ingénieur" but in America, there is no title. There is however a title for getting a Ph.D. in which you get to be called Doctor which isn't the case in France.
@Poussindesdomtom4 жыл бұрын
_"Grandes écoles"_ or _"engineer"_ (you're not necessarily an engineer when you're graduated from a _"Grande école_ ) are more a social standing thing. It's hard to explain but in our culture, people who do this kind of schools tend to consider themselves as _"superior",_ smarter than _"the proles"_ . Of course, I'm generalizing, all of them aren't unbearable pricks! ^^
@Street_French4 жыл бұрын
ah yeah it's true we don't have the Dr thing in France. but I think lawyer are being called "Maître" something like that. and yeah engineer are a diploma seen as very valuable and special it's true. but it really depends what you want to do. also as @OUPS said, you can study various things in grandes écoles: can be politics, "commerce", etc...

what is the difference between Je t'adore. and Je t'aime in seriousness or meaning? when do you use these phrases?
@Poussindesdomtom4 жыл бұрын
This is a tricky one! ^^ _"Je t'aime"_ is only used to express love (to the person who shares your life or your family) _"Je t'adore"_ is for really good friends you like a lot. I'm not sure but I think that's the same in english: don't focus on the meaning of those words. It actually depends a lot on who's saying it, how and in which situation. If a girl says to you _"Je t'adore"_ but she looks _"flirty"_ (you're the judge! ^^), it'll mean she wants more from you... Just never say _"je t'aime"_ to people you just like as friends (however, girls say sometimes _"je t'aime"_ to their female friends, especially teenagers, it's a girl thing! ^^). Also, never say: _"je t'aime bien"_ to someone, face to face, which means: _"I'm sorry, I like you a lot but..."_

@Street_French4 жыл бұрын

@StreetFrench.org How about Diane Kruger? kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmKYZ2t6ibpgl80 has her speaking English, French, and German. There's one entirely in French here kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoCWe5ecabl8e9U for a better comparison. I wouldn't go by the movies, as she sometimes (probably due to the role she plays) puts on quite the German accent. In the English interviews you'd really have to look for it and even then it's more like a "something is off" rather than a "German accent" when you notice it and it happens very rarely. Maybe in French it's her pauses that are a bit "can't quite place it" but it's close to a Jody Foster level if you ask me.
